Your Recollections from the Derby d’Italia

By: agiamba | December 1st, 2009

In line with derby week, I asked if anyone had any memories of a derby that had stuck with you, whether it was your first or just something notable about it. Apologies for not having asked earlier, but as always, you can post your memories below in the comment section.

From reader Papai:

I saw my first Derby d Italia in 1993, the year it was first broadcasted (to my knowledge) in India. I was all of 10 at that time – and Italy was my favorite team since 1990, when a certain Roberto Baggio danced his way against Czechoslovakia. I became a juventino during this match, when I saw that the same Baggio was playing for Juventus. Of the actual match I have very hazy memories – I remember Baggio scoring and a very dubious (so I thought at that time) penalty for Inter at the death. Probably the match was tied at 1-1 or 2-2. This was the match that made me a Juventus supporter for life, all because of one man – Baggio playing in it. At that time I didn’t know anything about the club’s history and status – anyways Baggio moved on but the Bianconeri and I lived happily ever and after

From reader HolyMann:

I have been following Juve since 2000-2001, i remember that year we beat Inter at home 3-1, was an incredible game, but we lost the Scudetto that year to Roma….my most memorable Juve-Inter game are down to be between two games:

1) Juve-Inter 2002-2003. we finished the game to beat them 3-0, and i believe it was on that day that we won the Scudetto that year (Inter finished runners up).
although i had just been a fan of Juventus for 2 years and a half, it was enough for me to understand the hatred and rivalry between these two teams, and i understood that this game was more than just a Scudetto decider, there was alot to this game….just as it is now, a week before the match you could already feel the tension and the hype. After we scored the first goal (where i obviously went crazy)….you can only still be scared of the equalizer, but i completely lost it after Nedved scored the 2nd…and what a 2nd goal it was, one of his trademark kicks from outside the box…..When Camoranesi scored the 3rd (i just watched the reply of that match now, he still had short hair then) i remember to have rested my back on the chair with my hands raised in the air….gives me goose bumps to just think about that game…

2) this should probably be also a famous Derby for us Juventino’s….Our 2-1 victory against the Intermerda after our return from hell, even though i knew that we lifting the scudetto that year was nothing but a dream, but it was enough for me to be able to step on their hearts infront of their own people….this was the proper way in telling Italy and the world that the Old Lady was back and can never be destroyed, love-sex-chocolate can go to hell, the feeling that i had after that match is irreplaceable..

Now let’s show the world Juventus’s true face this weekend. FORZA JUVE

From reader Sean:

I don’t comment as much as I used to, but I still read all of your postings, Ale!! For me, and this’ll date me compared to you youngins (I remember watching Platini and Scirea) my most memorable derby d’Italia was 1997-1998. For many Interistas, this served as proof of Calciopoli even though I think it just serves as proof that refereeing can be shit. Anyways, I remember that derby, that was in Del Piero’s best year when he was pacey, deadly in front of goal, and young, he was far better than Lionel Messi could dream of being back then, just a few months before his knee injury. He scored a genius goal in that derby, he was far on the left flank, dribbled cleverly, and then just slipped the goal in at a very tight angle. It looks so easy, but I’m sure it is not!!

From reader Anthony:

My most memorable Derby d’Italia would have to be the one in February
2006. It stands out in my mind mostly because I was in Italy at the
time. I had gone on a trip with the Italian club at my school. It was
only the second time I had ever been to Italy and the first time I’d
gone without my family and with a bunch of my friends. Our first night
there was in Florence, and it happened to be the same night as the big
game. Florence is a pretty anti-Juve city, but I insisted to my
friends that we go out and watch the game at a bar to get the real
atmosphere. So we went out asking around where we can watch “the game”
as no further explanation was necessary. We found this nice little bar
that was packed with people. I can’t remember the name unfortunately,
but it had a big screen where we could watch the game. It was pretty
intense in there. Lots of Juve haters, but a fair amount of fans as
well. Juve scored first. Then Inter equalized. Fans were arguing and
the place was in general chaos. Then I specifically remember Nedved
getting fouled just outside the area and Del Piero stepping up to take
the free kick. I’ll never forget the feeling I had when he scored that
goal. The Juve fans in the place went nuts and we stayed out all night
and partied despite needing to be up at 6 the next morning lol. Good
times

    Thanks, Apuzzo?

    Preview up.

As a Romanista I always disliked Juve more so than Inter but im getting kinda tired of this Inter team winning it every year. While i think that Inter are too strong and will run away with Serie A it would be nice if the scudetto race was slightly interesting for at least one week.

I don't WANT Juve to win but it would be pretty if it happened :P Good luck. Juve-Inter is always a match to watch.

and forza la veechia signora and derby d'italia! i guess we really hate each other, maybe more than inter-milan, we need to turn back to the 90s where italy is the best league, with roma, lazio winning scudetto, fiorentina coming close.
  • j
a draw/lost is goodbye to our scudetto dreams, we will need a Capello Real Madrid-2 comeback to win, which is almost imposssible, i would take a win anytime but even if we cant do it, at least show the right attitude,

my broadcaster back out on me a few months back, so i should be streaming, i heard streaming is good, but so far for me, i'm able to watch about 10-15 seconds before the webpage needs to load again, is this commom for all users? its frustrating and some links block youto see again so u need to refresh...
  • Dhaw
Okay , I am on the wrong page for too long now ;)

    Good Luck Zebra's.

    Johonna,

It's 1989 when I started watching Serie A and that year Inter won the Scudetto. After that it took you guys 15 years to clinch your next scudetto.

In that 15 years Inter as a whole displayed their "TYPICAL MENTALITY" which as a Inter fan you might not agree but as a football purist you would be able to see where I am coming from.

No doubt after 2006 you guys changed but just few years of winning doesn't wipe away your past as the jokers of italy.

I know as a Roma supporter we are no way close to what Juve and Milan & Inter but I guess that's the whole beauty of playing amongst the big boys as underdogs.
  • Dhaw
Oh and spending money left right and center has bothered me since the Madrid days. It's got nothing to do with Inter or Mourinho who is nothing but an over-hyped & over-rated tactician. He might be a wonderful man in man-managing a team but as a TACTICIAN he is not all that good.

His true nature was on display when Pep made him his bitch but anyway he is your coach and I am sure he is the second coming of Jesus for you guys.
  • Dhaw
    Vinod,

Football is more than just being a fan of one club. I love the game of football and such games(Juve vs Inter)are for purists.

I don't know how it bothers you that despite being a Roma fan I am interested in Juve vs Inter.
  • rhaaj
i have only been following juve (and football in general) from last season. coming from a cricketing nation, i didnt see much of football before that. just the world cups & one of my very first football memories are baggio's exploits & the penalty miss in finals during 94 world cup. but baggio is not the reason i am a juventino. alex del piero is. i was in italy during the 2006 world cup season and watched alex score against germany in the big screen at the milano duomo. that probably shud ve kindled my interests to follow football more regularly & being a del piero fan, i have been following juve and serie a from just last season.

anyway, my first derby d'italia memories hasnt been very happy. we lost the first match last season away to a stupid goal - and for that very reason muntari is one of the players i hate (i guess that was the first time i even saw his face). and the home match was a disappointing draw. i hope i'll have my first joyous derby d'italia tomorrow!
  • grandeMou
alessio: even funnier than 97-98 I assume ? ffs there were even songs written about the crap that juve pulled that season. i honestly dont know if inter is guilty or not of any cheating and gonna assume they are innocent until they are convicted. all i know is that juve were caught red handed ,pleaded guilty for CHEATING and punished. atleast you can claim proudly that you have won both serie A and serie B lol

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

as for mourinhos salary he is easily a top 3 manager in the whole world and his salary is on par with what comparable managers (ferguson , wenger , ancelloti) get paid or what he would have got paid at any other team. do u think juventus or real madrid if they hired mourinho would pay much less ? complaining about his salary from roma fans is just sour grapes from tifosi who are seeing their team getting screwed by rosella and cant afford even tp figuratively. please dont be jealous and take out your angst on inter
  • Vinod
What's even funnier to me is why a Roma fan is so obsessed with this match and Mourinho's salary and wishing Inter would crumble and stuff when they have their own Rome derby coming up. Evidently our match is more interesting - speaks volumes about how committed he/she is to Roma...
  • Gaetano
What do you guys think about our world cup draw. My one concern is that well get super lazy with no real difficult teams in the group. Could be terrible if we take anyone for granted. Say Slovakia.
  • Gaetano
Well at least she has more edge than MAD.
  • BTW - I dont agree with MAD. I think this squad can beat them. I wont say we will (hubris makes the Calcio Gods cranky. Cranky Gods smash dreams), but I most definitely think it is possible.
  • Its funny to me, Dhaw, how one person's opinion suddenly becomes the "Typical Inter mentality."

We are a diverse bunch of people with many different opinions and mentalities.

I will admit, I find myself falling into the perpetual underdog attitude - but after all those years of almost but not quite, it got sort second nature. Plus, I know that although Inter have been winning recently, the run will stop sooner of later - I dont want to be too haughty while the going is good.

I know that for many people, Inter seem like the 900-pound gorilla, stomping the Serie A but to anyone who has followed Italian football for more than these last few years knows that Juve is King Kong.

Well, at least they have been. Who knows what the future holds.
  • Dhaw
Oh now I am sure the notion on the INter Offside is going to be that why are they doing this just before the Derby ?

Why are they conspiring against us... Booo Hoooo , we are not cheats. We deserve to win something after spending shit loads of money all these years.

Please let our Mourinho win us another Scudetto , we pay him 11 million to do exactly what Mancini did without brains.
  • Dhaw
Please tell me Amauri is injured or on the bench. Please , pretty please.

Classic. From the courts...pot, meet kettle.

GrandeMou, 07-08 was the funniest championship I have seen. I'm not calling match-fixing, but the amount of favoritism (aka: bullshit penalties) Inter got that season was sickening, beyond anything Moggi could have arranged for 10 seasons, in his dreams.

Dhaw, it's the Inter mentality...always being a loser. He of course forgets to mention the incidents that have favored his side in recent derbies, of which there have been plenty.
  • grandeMou
dhaw : stop bsing around about fixed games. u guys were a shitty team then and a shitty team now. why should we fix games against roma of all teams ? didnt we hammer you 4-0 right in your home . all of us are extremely biased towards our own teams but this is beyond ridiculous and venturing into MAD territory

though I agree that we can safely award the most delusional post of the year to MAD for his recap of barca - inter. we got our asses kicked by barca b team and that is the plain truth
  • Dhaw
Correction : We werent the only team, but we suffered the most because of them.
  • Dhaw
    Jorid,

I did see the highest level of delusion from that tart after the Barca vs Inter game. That post officially took the title of "Delsuional fucks" away from the teenie boopers we have @ Roma Offside and landed straight into Mad's lap.

However, while you guys were in Serie B , the only team that was seriously robbed on countless occassions was Roma whether one likes or not yet this tart has the nerve to talk about "fixed games".

    Funny shit.
  • HolyMann
mighty big of you Dhaw....that guy is just on planet on his own......

the nerves started to kick in
  • Jorid
Dhaw: Honestly I have not seen such horrific delusion in a while. Thank you and I hope Juve win too. Not as much about MAD Tv getting annoyed by it, but just so we can stay in the Scudetto race.
  • Dhaw
I loathe Juventus but there is something about Inter that disgusts me no end.

I literally hate those bastards. Hate is a big word but yeah I fucking hate them. Not because they have started winning recently , hating them since 1989.

I hope Ciro doesn't fuck this one up. I also hope the ref gives you guys no favours but favours them on countless occassions but it's Juve who come out victorious. That's going to be AWESOME.

    Good Luck.

    MAD | December 4th, 2009 at 10:27 am

No, I am deadly serious. Okay, maybe not “deadly”… but you get the idea.

I am a big Inter supporter as many of you know. But I am not going to invest my time in this crap. Every year they get away with murder against us.

They broke Figo’s leg from behind and Maicon had a harsher in game punishment.

I think Paaaaaahvel only got 2 games suspension as well –as much as Maicon is getting for not crippling anyone.

Camoranesi scores the “winning goal” from about a mile offsides and no one says boo about it. It’s in quotes because we know where the game was actually won.

Last season, someone hurt themselves standing on Deki’s foot – from behind again – no call. Handling in the area – no call.

Meanwhile we get 4 offsides called against us – not one of which was an actual offsides.

Last season Leggro damn near raped Mario on 3 occaisons – no call. More handling – no call.

It’s ridiculous and I have better things to do than watch a fixed game. Which also explains why I don’t watch other Juve games.

Please rape them and put this tart out of his misery. Typical Inter mentality. Losers.
  • colaking
lets forget the tactics for a moment and just beat the fuckers by brutalness, its the only way i see us winning
  • j
unless is ranieri who asks for those players...like moggi say, we waste a lot of money, with the right players we wont be struggling
  • j
i know melo is better this season, but i think secco makes too many bad decisions, leave it to the football man
  • Troll, are you talking about the top 10 things to happen during the Derby d'Italia from goal.com? Carlo Garganese is a Milanista...not a Juventino.
  • ned lowe...Ferrara always said he wanted a regista like D'Agostino.

If he had a regista in his team right now, then he wouldn't need to be experimenting with different tactics right now. He had a set of tactics he planned on using, but then the regista never came. It's hard to play a 4-3-1-2 without a regista or at least a good offensive CM. Camoranesi can fill that role, but he's getting older. Marchisio is also a key player in that system and he's been injured.

In the future Juve needs to sign either a regista like D'Agostino, Cigarini, etc...or maybe even someone like Candreva. He can play in a 3 man midfield or also in a more attacking role...kinda like Camoranesi. Someone like Danielle Dessena would also be good. Or they could try bringing back Ekdal, though he might not be ready.
  • The Troll
well considering how they are all written by a juventino who never stops being an asshole on BS.com towards inter I dont find them funny at all
  • ok. Balotelli was an orphan, right? his birth mother is from Ghana, and then he was adopted by a family in Palermo. so here's a better chant:
    "BALOTELLI HAS TWO MOTHERS!"

Let's see ANYONE complain about those words. Zanetti, UEFA, and FIFA itself couldn't say a thing. Even Scirea wouldn't be disappointed.

let's do it. I'll be singing from New York.
  • Sam
Who wouldn't, the man fights and dies for every SINGLE ball
  • agiamba
Melo is better, but my point was we needed a regista, not a mediano. Melo can be the best player in the world, but there's still something missing from our midfield.

    I love Ferrara:
    http://www.tuttosport.com/calc...
    "I want 11 Nedveds"
  • bianconeri
j, Melo has been much better than D'Agostino this season.
  • bianconeri
TeamGREASE, "Balotelli has a mother" thats pretty fucked up, he's an orphan child. lol
  • Giro
I thought they were pretty hilarious
  • Giro
    4) Cristian Molinaro attempts an audacious backheel in his own area and connects beautifully with two balls. He then collapses to the floor in agony clutching his privates, while Diego Milito nips in and dispatches the untouched football into the net.

    3) Nicola Legrottaglie starts praying for a Juventus victory. God tells him that he can guarantee a Bianconeri victory providing Legrottaglie offers him an adequate sacrifice. The stopper vows to not have sex until Inter finally win the Champions League again. God asks Legrottaglie if he is sure he is comfortable with abstaining for the rest of his life.
