Well, at least we’re not Atletico Madrid
By: alessio | October 5th, 2008What a crappy week. My beloved Cubs got swept, again. It reminds me of Juventus, with such a great season, I expected a lot of them, and I’m just left completely disappointed. Last year’s season was great for Juventus, and we expected great things this year; but the first month or so has left us far from satisfied. I’m officially joining the crisis bandwagon. 3 straight draws, increasing injuries, and our first loss of the season, at home. I really don’t know what to say about the loss, or the current problems.

Who’s to blame? Not Secco, for once. We should have gotten another defender, but I think he had a good mercato and we couldn’t ever expect this injury crisis to tear apart our team. Ranieri? He needs to shoulder a good amount of the blame, although I think this proves us tifosi cannot bench coach a team. He’s adapted the formation almost exactly to what most Juventini have been demanding in the last few weeks, but it’s still clearly not working. The players for me. We’re making mistakes left-and-right, and our attack looks totally impotent. Buffon looked frustrated as hell after being beaten by the second goal, really summed up what I felt. What disappointed me was the typical Juventus spirit was absent from today’s match. After some random guy scored against us in 82′, the team just gave up. That’s Rioma style, we’re known for never giving up! But where was that spirit? Not in the Olimpico.
Maybe we’ve lost the hunger to win, last season we were out to prove a point. We were coming from Serie B and we wanted to show that Calciopoli was a crock of shit. Everyone predicted we’d be pressed to get a Uefa cup spot, that Del Piero was finished, and that we could certainly not stand up to our archrivals. All of those predictions were smashed. But it sort of looks like the team doesn’t care enough. I feel a bit better Roma, Fiorentina and sort of Milan have been pretty poor thus far. Inter has been lucky to win, close 2-1 wins over Lecce and Bologna aren’t too fear-inspiring, but they are picking up the points. Is it because gli big are awful, or that Serie A is improving from the bottom up? Probably a bit of both.
I am very glad that there are minor injuries keeping most of our players out of international games. We don’t deserve to wear a country’s kit right now. The squad needs to focus the next two weeks on why we are sucking. We need to be united, not criticize each other. I was glad Cobolli publicly supported Ranieri as Roberto and I previously asked for. Chiellini and Buffon have both called for people to stop slamming Ranieri for the current problems. And of all people, Zampa- “I do not get all these whispers, he [Ranieri] is a praiseworthy tactician who did great things in Turin last term. I think some expectations are out of place, all good things take time.” I don’t think sacking Ranieri right now will do anything positive in the long run. Certainly his future with the club should be examined, but as far as I’m concerned firing him won’t help.
The Good:
Palermo: They traveled to Torino, and walked away with 3 points. Who cares how they played?
Marchisio: He was pretty much the only player I thought did well today. Good passing, retained possession, a great outing considering the mediocrity he was around.
The Mediocre:
Juve’s attack: A nice free kick from Del Piero, but Amelia really should have had that one covered. Considering their talent, we’re just not scoring enough goals. Today they didn’t have good service, but ordinarily we’re scoring like 25% of golden chances. Must be more cynical in front of the goal.
Giovinco: He was alright, but he’s still not taking on a man and trying to beat him. He’s a great dribbler, why not? Muscled out of large parts of the game as I feared would happen soon.
The Bad: Aka, the rest:
Juve’s Defense: We’re making bush league mistakes here. Beaten by two very avoidable goals against BATE, and 2 more avoidable goals today. Knezevic just lost his man several times, Mellberg was crappy, De Ceglie left our left flank exposed way too much and was beaten by his man on the first goal, and Salihamidzic couldn’t make it on the 2nd goal (although I think it was Knezevic’s fault). Grygera looked ok out there but didn’t offer his usual attacking spirit which we needed on the right without Camoranesi.
Juventus: 3 draws in a row, and a loss at home to Palermo. What the fuck is wrong with the team?
Sissoko: Thought the 2nd yellow was a bit harsh, but what the hell? Chill out man. We need the Momo of last season back.
Best moment of a dismal game: Miccoli running by the Curva Sud grinning after scoring a goal against us, and then injuring his calf immediately. Karma, bitch.
We need to take this international break to figure out why we’re playing so mediocre, and fix it fast. I’m not ruling us out of the Scudetto race yet, but if we continue this play we certainly will be out of it by November.

I’m glad Blanc and Cobolli have come out publicly for Ranieri. I think sacking him would be absolute madness and the best way to quiet this speculation is to loudly assure he has your complete support.

The biggest problem with Juve right now, is confidence. Things started to get sour the first day of Serie A onwards, when we couldn’t score more than 1 goal per game. Yes, we were winning, but by a short margin. Surely that must have been fu**ing with players’ minds just a tiny bit. When I look at Juve’s last 8 matches the previous season (when we were scoring at least 3 goals per game), I am definitely asking myself some questions…
Obviously, the 3-consecutive-draws followed by this week-end’s defeat did nothing to help the situation.
Perhaps Ranieri (who shouldn’t be sacked yet, far from it) should stop tinkering, and stick with the best starting eleven and the trademarked 4-4-2 wing attack formation we have been using for over a year now. God knows the 4-3-1-2 we tried Sunday sucked a$$.
And as alessio and roberto pointed out, injuries suck too. And it’s getting worse: we just lost Buffon for 1 month and Camoranesi for 3 weeks.

Yeah, i wonder why only Juve having (great) injury crisis.
What’s the ’cause ?
Over-Training ?
Lack Of Rest ?
…voodoo ?

Well, I think it’s pretty bad, but Roma and Inter seem to be having equal injury crises.

Uh, ya. Juve is not the only one. Hell, now Rivas will not be back until at least February. Out of nine starting defenders, five are injured. I think that we may start seeing youth-team players any second now.
Oh, and Jimenez, Dacourt and Figo are also out.
Yay.
Really, the only thing that is keeping us afloat is that Cambiasso can cover in central defense.

ale and I have had this discussion before, but I am absolutely convinced that a major reason why Juve are in no hurry to sack Ranieri is that they have their hearts set on Cesare Prandelli.
And as much as it breaks my Viola heart to say it, I am more than 90% convinced that the The Great Man will be leading the Bianconeri within two years. He is simply too perfect for the new Juve that the Elkaans are trying to build, be it in terms of managerial aptitude, Bianconero background or (deservedly) pristine image.
I only hope that we will have left the country before he leads you to your third star, because those are one set of celebrations that I would find massively difficult to take.

If he does come lets hope he brings Montolivo along with him. If Marchisio and Montolivo continue to progress to their full potential they will be one of the greatest CM partnerships.

Look, did anyone see Alex’s interview? I don’t know bout you guys something looked amiss. But I know it’s nothing to worry about because they’re all professionals. I don’t really blame Ranieri, he made some mistakes yes but of course we also had injuries etc to deal with. But this small.. recession of ours is just a hint of a bigger problem - our effing management and board. Seriously, open your eyes guys, Juve can’t be under these incompetent dimwits. The elkanns dont possess even an ounce of their forefathers’ passion and care for Juve. Nedved and Alex stated they stayed to honor the Agnellis, I cant say any upcoming player would feel the same way for the Elkanns, their hearts just do not beat for Juve, I can’t explain it but I just get that feel. And our transfers have been ludicrous, what a bunch of idiots.

Cubbies!! I’m not a baseball fan by any stretch of the imagination but I was hoping they would do something this year.. When does basketball season start? So I can watch the Raptors, Suns and Bulls all lose and get me even more depressed.
Just wanted to spare a thought for Juventus.. We’re in similar dire straights so I feel for you guys and gals.. What a terrible season for so many hopefuls.. The only people enjoying it are the neutrals who have enjoyed Cluj, Famagusta, Almeria, Lazio, Hoffenheim, Hull and the like.. (the latter 2 I am really enjoying..)
I’m really gunning for quite a few teams around Europe to pull it together.. Roma, Juve, Fiorentina, Tottenham, Bayern, and to a lesser extent Milan and Real Madrid.

After last years great campain, the optomistic Juventus fans were always going to say “we can win the Scudetto next year” These optomistic fans are also very unrealistic. Did anyone here, in their heart of hearts actually think Juventus could add a third star to their crest come May 2009? I didn’t, and thats why I aint panacking. Juve will pull things together soon, we have been unlucky with injuries and confidence is a little low, but give us time, and don’t expect too much this season. We are no longer the side that many of us knew and loved in the 90’s and early/mid 00’s. We are still trying to find our feet in Serie A. We have Napoli after the international break, Naples is always a tough city for opposing sides so if we don’t win, please please don’t come on these blogs with a load of ‘zOMGZ!!!11 rANI3Ri N3EDS 2 GO!@!!11ONE”
We have 29 league titles, we are in no rush to make it 30.
Be patient
stay calm
keep the faithForza Juve.

If we lose against Napoli and both Madrid games, do you really want Ranieri to continue?
If we were to continue at this rate we wont make a top 4 position in the league and the success we had last year will all be in vain.

I didn’t expect us to WIN titles this season but give it a pretty damn good fight. I had high hopes had our transfers been going in the right direction, but we’re under the power of a man who used to be in charge of Roland Garros and our transfer is under someone who used to give papers to the referee at the sides. I’ve given them the chance in B and last year, but our transfer policy has been ludicrous and laughable for a club of our stature.

ranieri has come out and said poulsen is better than alonso. he really is stupid. although giovinco is going to sign a new contract but you really need a better manager and transfer director secco is so bad. you could of had santacroce las january but bought sissoko instead and no matter what i think of him you didnt need him at that point of season. and poulsen is merda as well. i just think it is very sad this has happened to juve even udinese are signing better players

I wonder what would happen the next time Juventus win a league title. Will they put the 3rd star on their jersey or will the league ban them from doing so? It should be an interesting battle which could possibly end up back in the courts.. With a lot of players, coaches, officials and football personalities having their say and complaining through the media.
I wish we had a system similar to Germany with the stars.. Maybe then Roma will get a star..

Bashar they already said they will and the league can’t do anything about it cause there are no regulations on putting stars on a jersey. We could put ten stars if we wanted to.

John makes a great note. You’ll notice back in the season preview, I said on paper this squad was a Scudetto winning squad. I also said the most important person to us would be Dr. Agricola. Seems he’s failing to hold up his side of the bargain.
Bashar, the management have said they will put a 3rd star on. It’s not something regulated by the league, so they have no say in it. I want it, although I fully expect everyone to bitch about it in Italy, well screw them, we deserve it. There’s always the silver star, Bash! 10 Coppa Italias, you get a silver star. Roma and Juve are both 1 away from grabbing it.

if we win the scudetto we will put the 3rd star, and shove it in inter’s faces.

Juve’s problem: Alessio Secco.
I mean seriously why is this man still pulling the strings? He certainly has not performed to the standards of this club. I really don’t understand how he is able to maintain his position and yes the youth have to play a bigger part and I’m glad to see Marchisio, Giovinco and De Ceglie getting playing time because they’re stellar players. Marchisio was for me the most solid performer against Palermo.

Silver star eh? That would be fantastic.. I’ll take it.. I wish the Coppa CONI counted as a Coppa Italia.. We would have 10 then.

No, Ben. Juve’s problem= Dr. Agricola.
Gazzetta reporting today that Buffon has a tear in his right thigh and will be out till December. WILL IT NEVER END?!
