We Are Screwed

By: agiamba | January 22nd, 2010

There’s a whole host of statistics out there that might give us some confidence- It’s been 4-5 years since Roma has beaten Juventus, it’s since 2000-2001 since they’ve beaten us in Turin, and Francesco Totti has never scored on Turin. All of these, as you know, are pretty much irrelevant as the Saturday evening clash ensues. There are no two ways about it, we are screwed.

20082009_roma-juventus_010
Juve Tifosi in Rome

This game has been approached with a fair amount of detente from the two sides. Like Palermo-Fiorentina and Inter-Milan, this is (on paper) a hotly contested match between two sides that don’t like each other, both who want to get into Europe, or in the case of the Milans, win the Scudetto. The pre-match talk has been relatively quiet, with Ranieri insisting he’s not out for personal revenge, and Del Piero and Mr. Totti complimenting each other so much I wasn’t sure whether to tear up or vomit. The fact of the matter is, Juventus is in a horrendous downspiral of epic proportions, and while the Inter win maybe meant we could up our game for big matches, the Milan demolition job showed that no…we just hate Inter.

Two captains

Since I put on the captain band on my arm, before every match I’ve been repeating the same gesture. It is a part of a routine, one of these pre-game rituals that accompany last seconds before the kick-off. Greeting the referee, exchanging pennants, shaking hands with the opposite team captain. Gestures that have become automatic , repetitious, for somebody even superstitious, when you can’t help but think only about what will happen later. But if I stop to think about the value of these moments, it becomes clear that they are far from being banal. Above all on the eve of the match like this one, when on the other side, wearing a captain band on his arm, there’s a player like Francesco Totti.
If we put together our goals scored, they’ll be over 500. If we sum up the years of career, wearing the same shirt – it comes up to 35. A life.

The same could have been said about my games against Paolo Maldini. I’m sure that the concept of the flag, of the society symbol, of the team, and of the supporters doesn’t exist if then you don’t fill every day with contents on and off the pitch. That’s why for me it has always been and it is still an honor to meet players like these. Francesco and I were team mates in the National team, and I want to stress it out, team mates and not rivals. We are very different, but we have also a lot of things in common. We won the World Championship together and those memories unite us forever. But with our clubs, we were, we are and we will always be opponents.
That’s why I think that the champion can become stronger also by meeting great opponents on his way. And that’s why I’ll be happy tomorrow to shake hands with Francesco.

Alessandro

Ps. On this occasion we put up a video on Adp tv, that has become You Tube cult. If I think back, I can’t help, but laugh… Do you remember, Francesco?

Totti- “Alessa, how did the…”
Del Piero laughs at how Totti pronounces his name
x3…
Totti- “Alessa, how did the test go?”
Del Piero- “Bad, pretty bad. I turned in the whole thing blank.”
Totti- “Me too. Now they’re going to think we cheated!”

RECENT ENCOUNTERS: For the last few years, we have done nothing but kick Roman ass all over the place. We had some pretty good wins over Milan, too, like the 3-2 win thanks to Brazzo, or the 4-2 thrashing where we could have scored 2 more. Milan got their revenge. Roma will certainly be looking to avenge the numerous numerous defeats we’ve been handing them.

ranieri
Bentornato, Claudio. Hope the fans give him a warm welcome-back.

RECENT FORM: Ranieri has done an exceptional job since taking over at Roma, and I cannot say I am that surprised. As many of you know, I was quite a bit of a Ranieri fan during his time at Juve and I thank him for a job well done. That said, while I didn’t agree with canning him with two days to go, parting ways with him this summer was the right decision for us, and for dear ‘ole Claudio, who is now happily leading his hometown team. After a shaky start, Ranieri has seemingly undone all of the negative parts of Spalletti’s reign- the indiscipline, the mental weakness, and has instilled a good tactical spirit in the team. They are in good form, and after a weak start to the championship, are sitting pretty in 3rd place. We are in 5th, although if you consider the last 10 weeks of Serie A, we’d probably be battling relegation.

FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS:
Juventus- Take a deep breath everyone. Missing for the match are Caceres, Melo, Iaquinta, Camoranesi, Trezeguet, Poulsen, Giovinco, even little Luca Marrone. It gets even better- Grygera, Legrottaglie, Sissoko, Grosso, Marchisio, and Diego have had various minor injuries this week and all have been called up, though they are not fully fit. Yago, Candreva, Paolucci, and Giandonato are the new faces in the squad.

In defense, I would hope Legrottaglie and De Ceglie would cover for Cannavaro and Grosso, but I expect both of them to start. Salihamidzic and Zebina are available, so Ferrara has some options in the fullbacks. In midfield, I’m expecting due to injury decimation that Candreva will get a start against the club he was a fan of growing up, flanked by hopefully Sissoko and Marchisio. Up top, Amauri will probably start and will probably be worthless yet again. I’d much rather see Paolucci-ADP up top.

Preferred XI: Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, De Ceglie; Marchisio, Sissoko, Candreva; Diego; ADP, Paolucci
Predicted XI: Buffon; Grygera, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Marchisio, Sissoko, Candreva; Diego; ADP, Amauri

What once was…

Roma: Roma is not actually missing 1/2 their squad, somehow Ranieri’s arrival has decreased the amount of injuries they’ve had, which were Ranieri-esque under Spalletti. Confused? Me too. According to the ever-reliable Goal.com-

Predicted XI: Julio Sergio, Cassetti, Burdisso, Juan, Riise; Pizarro, De Rossi; Taddei, Perrotta, Vucinic; Toni

So they don’t expect Totti to start. I do though, his presence in the team is more than just his playing skills. Ranieri has done a good job reviving Taddei, Perrotta, hell, even Cassetti isn’t the disaster he normally is. Toni has quickly adapted to his new team, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Luca is Luca, and even if he is a piece of shit with the Nazionale, he’s always been reliable at the club level and I said he was a great piece of business for Roma. That said, he’s still awfully slow and I don’t care how many goals he scores, he better not be going to South Africa. We’ve made him the focal point of the Azzurri attack two consecutive tournaments, and he has done little aside from disappoint.

PREDICTIONS: 2-1 to Roma. Sucks, I know.

WORDS FROM FERRARA:
The match against Roma is around the corner, but during the press conference held on the eve of the match, the interest of the journalists was not so much on the technical aspects of the match. The rumours of other coaches who are candidates for the Juventus bench, the distant duel between Ferrara and Ranieri and the sacking of the current Roma caoch were the topics on which Ferrara was interviewed mostly.

Training behind closed doors
«Juventus is one of the few teams that allows people to watch the training sessions but this week I wanted to have a bit of privacy. In recent years the doors were always open but in certain circumstances the coach might feel the necessity to try something without giving an ulterior advantage to his opponents and to work solely with the team».

The meeting with the management
«It was a serene one and several aspects were analysed always with the common objective of coming out of this situation».

The statement by Hiddink’s agent about contact with Juventus
«I believe more in the words of the President who repeatedly told me he had made no contact at all. It is not the first time that agents and coaches make certain statements. Surely, I would have never refused such an offer… In this situation anybody can take advantage to sponsor somebody or other. It is spoke about every day of how Ferrara’s bench is at risk and who could replace him, sometimes perhaps unfairly. Even if there were contacts with a coach or other it wouldn’t matter».

Ranieri’s sacking last year
«I was a Juventus player for many years and when I stopped playing I began my career as the person responsible of the Youth Sector and today I am the Juventus coach. What I care about is that the team reaches certain levels. I think nobody could ever think that in that circumstance I was aspiring for the bench. I remember when I was called for the last two matches. My name had been mentioned but I did not wish Ranieri harm. It is not in my character to do so. Obviously, I was happy when they called me. There were rumours that I had spoken badly of Ranieri but this is not the case and I am sorry that this sort of news was diffused. I saw what happened to Ranieri from the outside since I was taking care of other things and therefore I have no idea what went on in the dressing rooms and what Ranieri’s relations with the management were like. I will have the chance to see him on Saturday and I will say hello in a cordial manner. Don’t forget that he was my coach at Napoli and I think we have a mutual respectful relationship. Surely, I have nothing to clarify or justify myself for. I was involved only by others and I do not want this match to be seen as some sort of duel between me and Ranieri. Surely, on his part there will be a bit of heart feelings but neither me nor him will be playing. It is the players who will be on the field to play in such a delicate match».

Candreva
«If he was signed by Juventus it is because he showed great quality. He has a clear mind and I tried to explain to him that wearing this jersey is important and difficulty especially for a youngster. We also spoke of technical aspects and he seems to know football. He can interpret various roles and has already done so with Livorno: against us he played as trequartista but against Napoli he was fielded in front of the defence. He can also play on the inside and I tried him out in that position. I don’t think he would unbalance us because technically he is also ready for phases without ball possession and sacrifice. He times his exits well and is capable of playing in 3-strong midfield».

Sissoko
«Momo is ready to play. The important thing is that he does not have problems. He overcame the problem he had and is available. He is important for immense physical strength and also for the intensity he puts into training. He is of a stimulus to the whole group».

The match against the giallozozzi
«Roma is going through an excellent moment, but I prefer playing against these type of teams who play with enthusiasm. We want to interrupt their positive streak. We must try to get back on track and return to running without looking at the table. It is difficult to do so seeing that the margin is even greater at the moment. This should be an ulterior motive».

Juventus and Roma: two different trails
«I did not bother with looking at the trail of the opponents but certainly I would not have expected such an important change of tendency on our part. I knew we would have encountered certain difficulties, but not to this extent».

Toni reborn with Roma
«Football is strange: there are players for whom it is enough to change place and immediately they do better. Toni is an example just like Tiago (who scored his first goal for Atletico Madrid), to whom I send my best regards».

Whatever happens…….never be ashamed to be a Bianconero! Forzaaaaaaaaaa Juve!!!

But about the ManCity-Amauri thing, people, ManCity is linked with EVERY FREAKING PLAYER IN THE WORLD so it would be a miracle if they wud actually buy Amauri... nevertheless, the situation is horrible.... Marchisio is STILL being played outta position (he still works his socks off though and plays decent) and Amauri is just plain ol Amauri sadly... when is the horror gonna end people... when???

To: all of juve fans. we now face the worst performance of our beloved team. This is not we want. But remember, all big team experienced the same problem moments ago. Now it's our team's turn. there is no single person to blame. This moment actually show who really you are. whether you are a TIFOSI DELLA JUVE PER SEMPRE or not. and who join me to declare "IERI...OGGI....DOMANI....SEMPRE JUVE ???"

Guys let's please be serious for a second. Please.
Why are Ferrara and Secco still working? Surely this is officially the absolute worst I've ever seen Juventus. Every team has their poor spots, drop in form, but this is absolutely rediculous. We haven't played well all season, and for the last two months we've lost quite a number of games and have been shelled by Bayern and Milan. When is this disgusting display going to end? Does Lippi really hold that much sway to dictate that no changes will occur until he arrives? This reaks of lippi influence. As I've said before, Lippi is not the same Lippi that we all know and love, he's an arrogant hasbeen and he is ruining our storied Juventus match by match. If it's not lippi what the hell is it then that continues to keep this team in this situation? Why haven't we moved anyone? We've only managed to bring benched goods into this already crowded team.

We should be offloading some of the over whelmingly hyped nonesense. Why is Amauri starting every fucking game? When was the last time he scored? He didn't even take a shot on net today, and only had one header. Come on. Start Immobile at least. This is a crying shame.

I'm not going to touch on Buffon's play, aside from his reactions to certain plays, he's still the only thing this team has going for itse;f. Chiellini went from having a solid number of games to being completely disoriented. he's venturing all over the map, and was caught out of position a number of times. I'm very shocked Im about to say this - But - Had legro not played today we would have been shelled. Heck, even Melo wasn't there and we still lost.

Please fellow Juventini, don't look at this as a close miss, that would only be a patch job. Tonight was the game we needed to win and every single player on the pitch let us down. We were beaten by a thin Roma team. It's time to part ways with a couple of brazilians, a couple of old italians, a coach that should dress as a defender instead of coaching and a manager who has little to no knowledge of calcio. Heck with all this shit going on fire Blanc as well. It's time to clean house, this reaks rot!
  • Armando
Now we need to make moves before the winter transfer market ends. I think we should try to get Criscito right now in the winter, and possibly a central defender, such as Bocchetti or Santacroce. A double move on Genos for Criscito and Bocchetti would be a good idea. With Crespo looking for a way out and Floccari already having left, maybe theyll be looking for a striker, so throw them Amauri in a two-for-one trade and we're good.
  • Armando
jiji: i didnt say that Trez or Iaquinta would solve our problems. But today for example they wouldve. Sure, most of the time we dont have many clear goalscoring opportunities, but today we have 4, with 3 of them going to Amauri, and he only put one on target which was saved, albeit it was a nice header even if it was right to the keeper. Ask anyone here and everyone will tell you, with 3 good heading chances right in front of goal, Iaquinta or Trezegoal would put at least one of them in the back of the net. Iaquinta is a beast and Trezeguet is called TrezeGOAL for a reason. But it's not just Amauri's fault and not just Ciro's fault, but those 2 certainly dont help either. Injuries are alot to blame as well as alot of players not having their heart in it. When Camoranesi, Giovinco, Iaquinta, Trezeguet, Caceres, etc get back, and we decide on a set formation, preferably a 4-3-1-2, i think we'll definitely do much better. I mean, compare today's best squad available:

    Buffon/Manninger
    Grygera/Zebina Legrottaglie Chiellini Grosso/De Ceglie
    Brazzo/Candreva Sissoko Marchisio
    Diego
    Del Piero/Paolucci Amauri/Immobile

To this awesome squad if we had everyone available:

    Buffon/Manninger
    Caceres/Brazzo Legrottaglie/Cannavaro Chiellini De Ceglie/Grosso
    Candreva/Camo Sissoko/Melo Marchisio/Giovinco
    Diego
    Del Piero/Paolucci Iaquinta/Trezeguet

The difference is serious in quality right there. I mean, even with all these injuries we have one of the best quality teams in Italy. But without our injuries, in my opinion we have the most quality of any team in Italy, and one of the top in Europe.
  • Jacob (Forza Roma)
bad luck guys! As I thought , you gave us a tough n tight game and you shouldnt beat yourselves down too much cause you gave us a hard game. I thought Sissoko was awesome for you guys, same with Diego, and to an extent ADP. Good luck for the rest of the season!
  • rhaaj
i dont want to see this grosso guy starting anymore. play PDC or brazzo or even grygera, but not grosso. and i am not saying because he conceded a penalty in this game. after all it was such a soft penalty given away!
  • rhaaj
how painful it is to look at the league table! i guess we've come to a point where we can't keep saying ciro is not at fault. true, he is not the one who constructed the team, but with squad he has, despite the injuries we've had, our standing in the table and more importantly how we do not show any improvement at all in various aspects after so many weeks clearly points out he leaves a lot to be desired. i have lost any hope that he'd turn it around after this. we need to find a tactician if we want to hope playing in CL next season!
  • Nnahoj
I agree Jorid. As I said in my earlier post, apart from Caceres and Diego, the directors got our signings wrong - again.

Now, I am not Ferrara's defender. In my opinion, it seems obvious that he can't this ship around - contrary to his words. Unfortunately there aren't any other options out there. So we may be stuck with him. My one remaining hope is that when we get Caceres, Camoranesi, Iaquinta and Trezeguet back we will start to look better. That's as much as I can hope for.
  • al
Jorid, there, Ciro post match comment:
    http://football-italia.net/jan...

I always like his press conference, tho. He should stay, imo!
  • Jorid
Nnahoj: I have never blamed Ferrara for everything that has gone wrong with this team. I think pretty much everyone here knows how much I hate JCB, the Elkanns and especially Secco as evident by my posts about what their carelessness and lack of neural capacity has done to this team post-Farsopoli.
Did we deserve to lose today? No, we did not. However, we were not brilliant and a draw would have seemed as the fairest of results. Ferrara is still a great man who has contributed much to Juventus' cause throughout his life. His contribution as a coach however, should end. It's not entirely his fault for the situation we are currently in, but our poor management(JCB,Secco) coupled with his lack of coaching experience are going to drive this team in the abyss.
  • Hard luck juve,
but i feel like we just did you a favor.
Can't say i'm not loving this, but anyway you guys have to reach 4th at least i don't think napoli is gonna do any good with the real teams :D
  • Nnahoj
Jorid, I am not disputing that either. All I am saying is that not everything can be put squarely on his shoulders. Our squad is talented, no doubt, but some are just not cutting it. Due to injuries, he's had no choice but to field some of them. The team didn't always look bad, and there was a time when we created many chances in a game. Think about when it all started to go downhill and what was the trigger.

Would any of you honestly say that we deserved to lose today?

I'm really curious to hear Ciro's words after this game. Also, I'd like for someone to interview JCB and Secco and ask them about Juventus' situation. JCB will try to be extremely politically correct and tactful, while sounding like he doesn't know shit about the team as usual; Secco will say "Well right now we are broke and leaking a lot of goals in the back, so I will travel to Sardinia, buy Cellino lunch and try to convince him to loan us Joaquin Larrivey."
  • Nnahoj
    Alastair

Unfortunately, Ferrara is not the one signing players. We all knew we needed a young center back with pace and what did we get; a washed up 36 year-old with absolutely no pace. We knew we needed a midfielder who can pass well and what did we get; another defensive midfielder. We knew we needed some fresh legs up front and what did we get; absolutely nothing. Add to this the countless injuries to players - a lot of them key - during the season. It would always be very hard to forge an identity, play nice football, have the team gel etc., in such a situation, regardless of who is in charge.

Furthermore, let's look a little closer at what's been happening on the pitch. How many of our goals conceded this season have come down to player errors? I would say at least 80%. We've been practically assisting on every goal we've conceded. To me that's a problem that stretches far beyond the coach. These guys need a shrink. Today was a perfect example; to me Juve were looking quite comfortable as Roma wasn't doing much up front. Then alas, Chiellini gives the ball away right at the top of the box and the rest is history. I'll go a little further back to the Bologna game; similar situation, Bologna were posing no problems then all of a sudden Melo gives away the ball and we end up drawing. The same things was happening last season that caused us to go 2 months without a win. I think it's time to look past the coach and at the players on the field.

Unfortunately again, you can't retool an entire mid-season, so the obvious scapegoat is the coach. Either way, as long as my team wins I don't care who is in charge.
  • Armando
We have the determination, and we have the talent. Diego, ADP, Marchisio, Sissoko, Chiellini, Buffon, Brazzo, etc are showing this. But thanks to Ciro, and not knowing how to coach, we dont know how to play as a team. Basically, today's match was Roma vs 11 strangers thrown together, and we're lucky to have done as well as we did thanks to individual talent alone such as those players i mentioned above. Candreva had a decent game, i mean, he only got 20 minutes, so you cant expect him to do all that much in such a short amount of time. And Paolucci seemed determined, but only got a couple minutes. One thing i have to say though is that even though he didnt score, Amauri did get one good header on goal (even though he screwed up on 2 before that), and was working very hard today, which is good to see, even if he doesnt really produce anything. But the thing is, Trez or Iaquinta wouldve buried all 3 of those headers most likely, or at least 1 or 2 of them.
  • Alastair
If I had told you all, in the wake of our excitement about the likes of Diego being signed, that in January of this season we would lose 0-3 to Milan, 0-1 to Chievo, and 1-2 to Roma in three straight league matches, with the two games against our rivals being at home, you all would have laughed.

Who posted that list of all-time Juventus managers and their win rate? Ferrara was near the bottom of that list weeks ago, before all these fresh defeats. He has lost 1 in 3 matches in charge. Think of it this way: every time we play two games with him in charge, we will lose the third.
  • Jorid
The Troll: Save us your Cinderella-bedtime stories. Nobody here gives a fuck about you or your shitty team.
  • Jorid
^^^What I meant was we could go as low as 9th once everyone has played 21 games.
  • Jorid
I am with Gigi too. His opponents were on a breakaway, he had to stop them. Did he miss the ball? Sure, but in such short amount of time, he couldn't do much better.

Nnahoj: It's not Ciro's fault that Chiellini and Grosso made mistakes, but Ciro can't do anything to turn this team around anymore. You understand that we are 5th at the moment and could go as low as 9th once all remaining/postponed games are played? We have lost 8/last 11 matches played. All of this done with 17 more weeks to go. What does that tell you of our future?
  • Alastair
We are not suffering from a lack of talent: despite all our problems and injuries and bad signings, we still have one of the best squads in Italy. We are not suffering from a lack of determination and effort, as Buffon, Chiellini, Marchisio, Sissoko, Diego, and others continue to show, to no avail. But this team has no idea what they are doing once they step on a football pitch, right down to simple one-twos or running for a return pass (Candreva was arguably at fault for the second goal, but before that you could see him getting the ball, giving it short, and looking for it again). They have no idea what is expected of them, who is dictating play, what position they should be playing, how to take a lead, what to do when they have got the lead, or how to respond when other teams score a goal. They are relying purely on instinct and experience, not the guidance and authority of a good manager.

Fire. Ferrara. I love the guy, I love everything he has given for us over the years wearing black and white, but off the pitch he is doing more harm than good, week by week.
  • Rinaldo
Even Candreva seemed like he came from a different school of thought, with his clean, short passes. It was weirdly obvious he hasn't been playing in this team for too long.
  • mohd
onther day onther loss we need six point to stay in seria A
  • Pablo
No Nnahoj, Chiellini's mistake can't be blamed on Ferrara, but he shouldn't get any praise for ADP's goal either. So yeah, we have been playing really bad lately, and I think it has to do with our coach.

As I said before, if we want to get to CL next year Ciro needs to go. If we want to gamble again, teach him and prepare him for being a great coach in 2015, let's keep him. Who wants keep re-building the team after calciopoli anyway, let's fight Europa League for a few years, Ciro deserves a chance to prove himself after all, and if Ranieri got almost 2 years Ferrara should get at least twice as much, he was a great player you know? and great players are good coaches after they retire. Maradona classified Argentina for the World Cup after all.

And yeah, I was being sarcastic!!!
  • The Troll
Like I said Karma is a bitch, now you finally understand our position rubentini, now you see how low we had to sink before we rose to the top
  • alex w
well... congratulations on a correct prediction
  • Alastair
The only thing I would fault Buffon for (as much as it disgusts me to see play that cynical) is thinking this Juventus team could go fifteen minutes without him.
  • dan
i seriously cant believe what the fuck is happening to our team.
  • Alastair
"what happened to you guys? sissoko was the only one (besides buffon of course) who looked like he gave a damn and had a plan in mind"

Coincidentally, he's been managed by someone else for the past few weeks.
  • Comrade
Alessio - what would you have Buffon do? Stand ground and see the ball being slot past him. Sure, if he had made a save, it would be another testament to his greatness. But if it were a goal, no one would have blamed him. I am with Buffon on this one.
  • Richie Aprile
    2 words:

    FUCK JUVENTUS!
  • Alastair
Nnahoj, it's his fault that this team don't know what to do when they have the ball, and have no idea where their teammates are or will be at any stage. This team has no personality, no shape, no tactical consistency, and all the while players are still being played out of position (Melo), played out of form (Grosso), or benched for no reason (Giovinco before he got injured).

And through all this Ferrara is close to silent on the touch line, looking like a wounded puppy.

I almost feel he's too nice for this, too calm. God help us, we need a Capello.
  • Sofia
Buffon did the right thing because Riise had a breakaway. It wasn't his fault. That penalty show was bullshit. Taddei is an asshole. The thing I hated most was that after he got the call he got up and cheered. I hope Ranieri and co. enjoyed their less than deserved victory because if it wasn't for Taddei's theatrics we would have come out with at least a point.
Ciao Ciro, you did all you could do, unfortunately it wasn't enough.
  • Armando
The only good thing to come out of this game was to see Del Piero back on form. His through balls were awesome and that goal was beautiful.
  • sam
what happened to you guys? sissoko was the only one (besides buffon of course) who looked like he gave a damn and had a plan in mind
  • Rhaaj
I was ready to take alessio's prediction before the match, but not right now.. not after alex's piece of magic..
  • Cezar
Ferarra. What a disaster. What a shame.
