We Are Awful

By: agiamba | December 15th, 2009

I couldn’t even think of a semi-clever title, having already spent them against Cagliari, Bayern Munich, the list goes on and on. Ratings and match review after the jump.

LE PAGELLE:
Buffon: 6- Not anywhere as busy as Gillet, but couldn’t really do anything about the goals. He’s gone for the next 6 weeks, so pretty much, we’re screwed.

ITALY SOCCER SERIE A

Caceres: 6- Decent from the my new favorite player, who defended like a Juventus player, and put a few good offensive passes in. But will he want to permanently sign with us?
Legrottaglie: 5- I said before the game Bari’s players are pacey. Alvarez, Baretto, etc. Legro, and especially Cannavaro, were too slow for this game. Heavy.
Cannavaro: 4.5- When he kicked a ball into Molinaro, it summed up his evening. Stupid challenge for a penalty, and was generally having difficulty with Bari’s attacks. Every week he looks more and more like the Real Madrid Cannavaro I wanted to desperately avoid, not the guy who looked great the first few weeks here. Incompetent.
Molinaro: 5.5- As usual, zero effect offensively on the game, but defensively he was not the disaster he’s been this season. He’s 26, Why insist on playing him over De Ceglie?? Adequate.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Poulsen: 6.5- Our best midfielder today, who continues to put some under-the-radar performances. Nothing spectacular, but he does his job. Solid.
Marchisio: 5- He doesn’t look fully over his injury, and he looks like he’s tiring quickly in the 2nd half. Awful error to pull a Felipe Melo and lose the ball on the edge of the box. Disappointing.
Tiago: 5.5- Summed up his last year or so, decent performance, but there’s still something missing. Should have buried his opportunity. Mediocre.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Diego: 5.5- Looked very determined, and his strength led to Trezeguet’s goal. Slowed in the second half, and took a terrible terrible penalty…although there was a laser in his eye, and the pitch in front of the goal was dreadful. Underwhelming.

Amauri: 4- I am so sick of watching him play right now. Send him to the Primavera, and bring Immobile into the first team. Whatever his problem is, playing him every game is not changing it. Flop-of-the-match.
Trezeguet: 7- Unlike his strike partner, Trez gets Alessio’s MOTM award. Typical Trez style-goal, and he (oddly) provided two golden opportunities for Amauri and Tiago, before being unluckily denied a second goal by a super-Gillet save. At the moment, he’s the only player who looks like he’s going to score, vintage Trez is back. Superb.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Grosso: 6- Decent performance coming on for Molinaro, but nothing fantastic which has kind of summed up his Juve career thus far. Did he dive for the PK? Hard to tell…there’s definitely contact but maybe he coulda gotten out of the way,
Camoranesi: s.v.- Likely 3 months out.
Giovinco: s.v.- Why not put him in earlier???

Ferrara: 4.5- Can’t control for certain players going in and out of form, but the defense is not organized, nor has it been for the last two months. Midfield has not been sorted out, either.

No need to apologize…

Other thoughts:
-I really, really, hate playing teams from the fucking Mezzogiorno. (Southern Italy) We beat mediocre teams like Atalanta, and then Sampdoria, and we ground out wins against Siena, Udinese and Chievo. Our record against teams from the South? 0-4, accounting for EVERY league defeat. We lost to Napoli, Palermo, Cagliari, and now Bari. Next week is Catania, and I’m no longer looking forward to it. We can thank the Calcio gods that Reggina and Lecce were relegated last season.

59134614

-Camoranesi is likely out for 3 months again. The 4-2-3-1, which some here absolutely love, is not gonna work because we have too little depth at the winger position. If Camo goes out, who goes in? Tiago, Marchisio? Neither worked very well there. If Giovinco or Diego is out, the whole thing falls to pieces. Buffon out for 6-7 weeks or so too.

-Felipe Melo won the Bidone d’Oro, the Golden Trashbin for the flop of the season. After a great start, he’s certainly looking more and more like it, especially with his massively inflated transfer fee. I think the votes were swayed by the last two weeks though, Huntelaar got a little boost with 10 minutes against the worst team in the league, Melo has looked like absolute garbage.

ITALY SOCCER SERIE A

-The mercato priority, as it has been for the last 3 years, is DEFENSE and a REGISTA, the former being more important. Grosso and Cannavaro were decent signings (from a performance perspective) for cheap, and their problems are symptomatic of a greater issue with our defense not being organized well, but even so, we need to look to the future. Criscito and De Ceglie are doable at left-back, easy. Ranocchia or Bonucci have demonstrated their young genius. At right-back, we’re set with Caceres, we just have to fork out the money.
-Roberto Bettega is being linked with a return as a director of the club. This can only be a good thing, as he was an important part of the old Triade, and dumping him in 2007 was a mistake. The new management thought they could run the club themselves, but I think if Bettega returns it’s a nice sign of humility. They know they got it wrong with Ranieri, and they know they did wrong to get rid of Bettega. The good news is this was reported in La Stampa, a real newspaper with 1,000x more credibility than say Tuttosport.

-It’s time for Manny to be Manny.

Apologies for the spelling mistakes - i'm just very angry at what's happening with my beloved team. I still hope Ferrara stays till the end if only to maintain stability and allow Gasperini to come in the summer. NO more short term fixes.
    Ps brilliant blog.

jesus,we really play as a shit.our team is average and full of flops -thank you blanc and secco.Honestly, i don't think it's ciro fault cause everything came back to us because of stuppid summer signing of Melo.if we were got D'Ago instead this overated beast in midfield we were gonna be at least 2 lever higher as performance especially in midfield. But no- blanc and secco are mercato kings!NOT CIRO'S FAUL (WE KNOW THAT).The other point i s defence.as we all know Canna is too old and to bet on him creating new "PROJECT" IS SOMEHOW STUPPID.He's making the same mess in the back like in Madrid. He's simply out of his best but for cover i think is ok.Grosso is the other flop-yes,he's cheap it doesn't matter when you have younger and impressive performed player on hand like CRISCITO.the board is our main problem- we need to take him back from genoa!!!the last and not the final is our attack- ABSOLUTELY IMPOTENT! NOT BECAUSE OF DIEGO, the guy is fine for me, but because of wrong planing of the team play.we play with stative strikers always and that's our problem- except IAQUINTA who is ok, all the others are out of the competition.we are not moveable enough upfront and it gives Diego trouble to creat something fast.Amauri is crap for me from the very beggining-for this ammount we could easily sign Cassano or Pazzini plus some defender,OOOO don't forget NOcherino! The boards are idiots!!!....i'm tired of watching my favourite team display this season...i realy hope with new year and Bettega something to be changed rapidly...i still hope that the season is half past but we have our chance if we find stability in defence(new arrival is needed) and start scoring (new young and fast striker we need i like Pazzo).HAPY NEW and successful 2010,JUVE FANS!

Roberto - I agree I definitely see Rossi as the way to go. And he is Italian. I am pretty sick of having to call in internationals that don't add anything to our team. It's quite sad actually.
  • Roberto
Why has nobody been mentioning Rossi? He would give us the pace and finishing we need, plus keep us Italian (See what happens when we trust our squad to so many brazilians!!!), and could be a long term solution up top for the next 5-7 years. Think Amauri and 10M would get him?
  • I like Ozil... currently the best player in the bundesliga
  • Vince
I like Dzeko a lot but he seems to be in love with Milan
  • Personally, I am not a fan of Zarate. Nothing against his talent, but I don't like his attitude and I don't see him as a team player.
  • Armando
Granted that's not all we need, as we obviously either need another CB and also need to promote Ariaudo and use him more. We also need a leftback, Lahm would be awesome, and should buy Caceres or go for Maggio. Then we'd be set.
  • Armando
Oh, and a striker, possibly Zarate, Helmes, or Dzeko, i would be extremely happy with any of them and get rid of one of ours, either Iaquinta or Amauri, whoevers performing worse by the time the time comes where we can get a new striker.
  • Armando
I think if Ferrara loses this next game, then it's time for him to go. Personally i have a lot of faith in him, but the point is, he's not getting the job done. I think Felix Magath would be a great idea, but ive heard reports suggesting Hiddink who would also be a good idea. I think the best thing about Magath is that he brings out the best in the players, especially the strikers, just look at Grafite and Dzeko last season and now Kuranyi. So we'd see the monster Amauri back again which would be great. He's just a great coach. Also, i think a move for Marko Marin or Toni Kroos would also be a great idea.

what's the problem between moggi and fiat/ferrari people? i use to think that they are buddies, and elkan is sort of our owner right? or isit the ferrari boss?
  • Antonio
more than half of the injured players suffer an injury at the training grounds in vivino rather than in a game. does anyone else get extremely annoyed by this
  • ooBia
    :( i wish him a speedy recovery.

" the Juventus midfield will also be without Christian Poulsen against Catania this weekend after the League's disciplinary commissioner handed him a one-game suspension." why, what did Poulsen do?
  • al
  • Sam
YES! AMAURI IS INJURED, I HOPE THIS ISINT JUST A RUMOR!
  • bianconeri
I never said that Ferrera wasen't the one to blame. But I think that our team will take alot of work to rebuild and time being the biggest factor, no matter who the coach is. Something in our team just isnt right.
  • Mo
And who's fault is that Adam? Cough....Ferrara...cough. Given he was a great CB it's surprising he can't organize our backline nor our midfield cover!! I'm waiting for hiddink a regista a CB and a pacy and creative forward. If we manage to get all 4, I guarantee us success.
  • sammy
"lol, moggi he was great at transfers and locking refs in locker rooms as well as other shoddy mafia criminal activities."

haha funny funny, and you guys want him back? hmm wonder why??
  • bianconeri
I don't think it really matters who we get, our team needs to be much more disciplined and organized. No one has any clue what they are doing on the field.
  • Jorid
Giuseppe: I agree, Cannavaro is definitely past his prime. It is because of this that I strongly believe the stud known as Simon Kjaer would be very beneficial. What you say at 5 million for him? We'll even throw in Cristian Molinaro for free.
  • Giuseppe
Salut di Palermo, one thing and on thing only: CANNAVARO FUCKING SUCKS-NO NAZIONALE AND NO CLUB. NO NOTHING FOR THAT PIECE OF SHIT...i'm not even mad about Juve caus eim a Palermitano but im mad because he's gonna burn our chance at the WC...If he cant keep up with Alvarez, and Baretto HOW THE FUCK is he gonna stand a chance against Torres, Ronaldo, and even Hamsik from Slovakia/Napoli. Time to wake up and retire Canna, you are no longer any resemblance, small or large, of what you used to be

No Ferrara is not to blame for all the mess and the squad is incredibly imbalanced in the sense that there's no registra to play the 4-3-1-2 nor strong fullbacks. And no wingers were bought to play a 4-2-3-1.
HOWEVER - Ferrara deserves A LOT of the criticism. He has no idea how to play a solid formation. He played a defensive formation with 3 defensive midfielders despite the fact his true defensive midfielders (melo, momo) were absent and 1 striker who has incessently proved his inadequacies at finishing (Amauri)
To top it all off, if he insisted on playing those three, then why not insttuct poulsen to hold his position as 'the rock' a la momo, and instruct the other two to pressure on the wings? The should have moved up, understood that they had to pressure the opponents and if they messed up, Poulsen wwould be behind to tackle and failing that, the OAP defence can attempt to defend.
But no - none of them - absolutely none of those three had any idea of what to do so yes - that loss in particular was alllllllll Ferrara's fault and i hate saying that as i'm obsessed with him.

Roberto Bettega ohh how i love you.

    play the narrow 4-2-3-1

    the 3 being Gio--Giego--Del Piero
  • agiamba
No, the Facebook page we mentioned is a group for Juventus I created 3-4 years ago or so, it's currently the largest on Facebook. Good stuff, there's some good discussions on there.

MJ takes the cake for trolling and then asking for a question. Well done.
  • so whats this facebook you people are always talking about? is it a juventus page or alessio/roberto's personal page?

and you want to sell criscito for extra cash? i thought we were all eager to get him back but i havent seen genoa play much this season so im not sure if his form has dropped or something. can somebody fill me in?
  • MJ
alessio was ranieri always going to away matches for a draw and was too scared to make sensible subs to attack the game and go for a win?
  • Jem
"that i really hate that all the blame is being placed on ferrara..."

I'm not a fan of it either. ferrara's not the dumb ass out there blazing spot kicks into the stands or making terrible tackles in the box...
  • Jorid
    MJ:.....zzzZZZZ.
  • MJ
Luciano Moggi was perhaps the only person this summer who criticised Juventus’ transfer work, and one of the reasons he cited was the imbalance of the squad. Once again it is clear why Moggi was such a genius in the transfer market as he understood that signing big names didn’t guarantee success unless the team was constructed correctly. Never has this been more apparent than at Juventus this season.

lol, moggi he was great at transfers and locking refs in locker rooms as well as other shoddy mafia criminal activities.
  • Sofia
can i just say that i really hate that all the blame is being placed on ferrara...i'm not saying by you guys, but by the media and fans in general...from what i'm reading. i don't think it is totally his fault as he is just working with what he has. it is up to the higher ups to bring in quality players and overall they really haven't. and then its up to the players to actually play. i mean ciro can do all the training and pep talks he wants, if those guys don't go out at play their hearts out every match the entire match for this team...what more can ciro do?
  • al
and if the changes do happen, dont forget to bring also this guy:

    http://football-italia.net/dec...
  • bettega returning is one of the most heartening pieces of news i got.

now lets just wait for lucky luciano.....
  • gigo
Good post, straight to the point. I just hope something in the management of the team changes soon.
  • Gaetano
    Roberto u forgot about amauri.
  • I think it's clear Tiago will be gone after this season. We've been more than generous with time and he's never really come around. Many of us were spot on about his shittiness by his second or third game in our jersey.

The only way we're going to afford new players is by off-loading some of the ones we have.

Molinaro, Almiron, Tiago, Poulsen, Criscito, Palladinho, wherever we can get some cash, do it. Get rid of these mediocre players once and for all so we can get some stallions.
  • ooBia
thank you Alessio for such a wonderful post in such dark times.
i for one still didnt make my mind on Ciro. change is inevitable, and we have to patient. at the same time i dont really like the 'progress'..

lastly, i am really fine with Manninger filling in for Gigi, that's no problem. the problem is the two guys right in front of him; Canna and Legro.
  • Gaetano
    What's going on alessio?
  • ned lowe
Good stuff Alessio...n here r my thots

1.Let Gigi gio have his surgery and bring on Manninger for the Catania game n until Gigi is ready to return(we can't be any more porous in the back than we already are!)
    2. Place a ban on ALL transfer activity and make Bettega's ( Roberto, not his son!) signing THE priority.
