Tacchinardi, Grant, Mancini, and other Questions/Rants

By: alessio | November 17th, 2008

-Can anyone tell me what the FIGC-equivalent of Argentina was smoking when they hired Maradona? Sure, he’s inspirational. Sure, he’s the country’s legend. But the guy has little-to-no coaching experience, and the little he had was pretty crappy. I feel a lot more secure about Italy’s chances in WC2010 with Dunga, Maradona, and Domenech leading their respective countries.

I miss this guy.

-So, is Tacchinardi going to retire? He’s been out of contract since this summer, but I haven’t read or seen anything that says he’s going to hang up his boots. After being loaned out to Villarreal for two seasons, he signed a two year contract with Brescia, who decided against taking him up on a 3rd year. Could be a sad quiet ending to a great career.

-On the subject of being out of contract (sort of) is Avram Grant getting another job? People lauded him for getting to the Champion’s League. Here’s my take: it just showed how overrated Mourinho was. Not too special when a man with zero major coaching experience can equalize (or better) your feats eh? Credit Chelski’s success/almost-success to Abrahimovic and (gasp) Claudio Ranieri, who set the team on its’ way with Lampard, Cech, Terry. Mourinho gets some credit for a few of his transfers though. Nevertheless, you’d think Grant’s CV could at least land him a temp job at say, Newcastle.

-Speaking of coaches, Roberto Mancini; Get a job already. We’re sick of midtable clubs asking for your services and then hearing your agent pimp you out and pretend that Chelski and Real Madrid are gonna swoop. I hear the Toro will have an opening, but you’ll have to beat out Roberto Donadoni for that job.

-Juventus 2008-2009, 30th Scudetto. Proof nice guys (Ranieri) can win silverware. Let’s hope we kick off the campaign by him getting some measure of personal revenge by beating out the Overrated One.

-Rare insightful words from Channel4. Why won’t Ibra win the Ballon d’Or? Cause he’s a big-game choker. I don’t understand how people don’t get this. However, if a certain player scores enough goals against crappy sides and the rest of the team wins the important game (since Ibra goes AWOL faster than Bush), there may be precedent to claim the Golden Ball (no, not you Beckham): CR7, of course, is the favorite for the award this year.

-Is it just me, or is Zdenek Grygera underrated? I don’t know if we signed him with the intent to be backup to Zebina or not, but I always though he’d win the spot, he’s got the pedigree: Czech national regular, spent time with Ajax, etc. Defensively he is solid, and he’s always a good outlet bombing up front, whether delivering good crosses (at least one of our fullbacks does) or scoring the goal himself.

-We’re putting a string of great results together without Buffon, Trezeguet, Camoranesi, and Zanetti. Life will somehow go on after these great men hang up their boots. Speaking of which, I’m warning everyone 5-6 months in advance, when Pavel waves goodbye to the Stadio Olimpico, I will be tearing up. But they will be tears of manliness in respect to a passionate man who personifies everything good and bad about football.

-Gigi Buffon says Federico Marchetti is a keeper to watch for the future. Next time instead of speaking to the media, Superman should edit his English-language Wikipedia which is woefully empty.

-Chiellini+Legro for Italia. Just not this week.

-Facebook needs to stop advertising to me to buy AS Roma jerseys and scarves. There is absolutely nothing in my Facebook with the word Roma in it, I assume their word association ad game linked it to Roma. Epic fail, boys. The only non-Juve thing I have on there is my membership in the group “Più recente “il primo uomo sulla luna”, che la Champions dell’Inter!!!” Which, as awesome as it is, has nothing to do with Roma.

That’s all for me today. Thoughts, as always, are welcome in the comments below.

hahahha, I loved the “Ibra goes AWOL faster than Bush” phrase!

I miss Tacchinardi too…it’s a shame we didn’t get him…which reminds me that Juve would be great in the long-run when Buffon, Zanetti and Trezegol retire from the club….it pains me to say it but the facts are speaking for themselves…

Btw, Grygera was also the captain of Ajax before he came to Juve…it’s amazing how we’re capturing the skippers of their previous teams: Grygera (Ajax), Mellberg (Aston Villa). We already have Nedved who captained the Czech National Team, not to forget our very own Del Piero + Buffon.

To have that many true leaders in the starting 11 is too good to be true.

you are right about grygera he is really starting to show the class he had at ajax. and ranieri has certainly silenced all his critics of which i was a huge one but i have to say success this season will come from chiellini, legro, pavel, amauri and especially alex

It’s really hard to accept that Nedved will be retiring considering he’s been like a well-oiled machine this season. Is it really certain? I always hear old players say that they’ll take everything step-by-step. In that case, don’t his performances say that he can still play for one more? I dunno, maybe it’s just wishful thinking but whatever happens, I wil be with you in “tearing” for that man. *sigh*

Anyway, that Grygera is really underrated but I guess you’ve to base this also on his consistency. I’m in no form to comment about this cause *gasp* I haven’t been watching tons of games. But maybe you do, Alessio? In this area of the world, they show games at 3am and it’s not so easy when you’ve school. But I saw the Genoa game and you’re right, he’s got the talent to outshine Zebina with his defensive and offensive skills. It was such a treat watching him bomb the right side. I just hope that he does the same with the scum of football, Inter and Ranieri gets his revenge on that arrogant prick, Mourinho.

It’s not certain yet, Justin. There was discussion of him staying on after his brace against Bologna in which Ranieri dubbed him “captain of the primavera.” He said basically depends on how he feels at the end of the season and how Juve finishes up.

That’s correct, Justin. Grygera has been very consistent, not scoring goals like Maicon but he both holds his own defensively and is a good outlet up front.

Side note, someone uploaded this to Facebook the other day, it must have been interesting when they first met at Juventus-

Marcello Lippi, called 4 players for Italy’s friendly match against Greece on Wednesday : central defence couple Legrottaglie and Chiellini as well as Camoranesi and Iaquinta. Giovinco and De Ceglie will be busy playing for Italy’s Under 21 squad on Tuesday in a friendly match against Germany in Osnabruck while Ekdal will be on the Swedish Under21 side in the match against the Netherlands. Wednesday will see Grygera’s Czech Republic in a world cup qualifying match against San Marino. Tiago was called up to play for Portugal in the prestigious friendly against Brazil. Manninger will not be taking part in any international friendly due to a slight back pain whereas Mellberg was not called up for the match against Holland by the Swedish coach.

Hopefully Giovinco, De Ceglie, and Iaquinta get a run out with their national sides as playing time has been a bit sparse lately. Marchisio and Mellberg, I believe were both kept home because they are both recovering from injury, thank you Lagerback. (Although you coulda done us a bigger favor and called up Ibra) Grygera’s trip to San Marino, well, he could probably drive there on his own. The only real concerns is Legro+Chiellini being ready for Sunday as well as Tiago. Tiago’s flying to Brazil and I believe isn’t expected back in Turin till Friday, let’s hope he doesn’t get a case of jetlag considering he looks pretty certain to play.

Lagerback said he left Mellberg off because he was leaving Ibra off (no special favors) - both have been playing 2 matches a week for some time and they need a rest. At least that is what I read.

And I hope Juve comes on Sunday cause I think the game is scheduled for Saturday :P

Roberto, you really surprised me with Zebina love affair. The logical things (I can come up with) for him playing football are: have a hell of an agent or someone was rearranging the universe for him.
    Well, nobody is perfect!

Alessio, the last part is funny. Now, instead of ads you will be getting more “love” from my Roma comrades.

Alessio freakin’ loved the article. regarding tacchinardi i also think is a shame never gonna forget that laser he scored against panathinaikos. it will be sad when the legend that at least a grew up loving in my team retire but for now i want to just think of the present. with that said I’VE NEVER BEEN SO ANXIOUS FOR A SATURDAY. this game against inter is a crucial one and its happening at the beginning of the season. luv it.!!!

    Speaking of Zebina…

KOd till February/March. Apparently the therapy he’s been going through for the last 3-4 months hasn’t been working on his tendon, so he’s going under the knife.

The good news is Trezegol is ready to start very light physical activities and will return to Turin soon, Brazzo’s tendon is healing well and Poulsen is ready to play shorts amount of time. Zanetti will soon be available as well, though we’ve been saying that for a month.

Johonna, thanks for the heads up.

Ah Alessio (the real one, not the one writing here :P )… makes me nostalgic of the late 90’s seasons. :)

So, with Zebina out till yonder, and Legro-Chiellini being well… irreplaceable, I think we can officially sanction the Grygera/Mellberg pair as right wing-back till the end of the season.

romabaha, I’ll tell you what. Zebina was never a “impact” player for us who’s ability could change the course of a game at any given time like ADP, Nedved, Camo, Buffon or Trez… however every now and then he provided very fluid attacking runs on our right side. The man would show some great dribbling ability when he was forced to, and in most cases made it seem so incredibly easy. I think that’s what appealed to me- being a RB myself and all.

Him and Grygera have very contrasting styles. While the Czech is much more raw and effort driven, Zebina seemed to be much more laid back using his finesse to his advantage. Anyways, I’m gonna miss that French bastard. Although not as much now as Grygera is really stepping up.

I agree with you on that Roberto, he linked up nicely with Camoranesi last season. But Grygera is doing ALOT better.

Zebina has yet to score or assist a goal in Serie A with Juventus since joining us in 2004.

He’s assisted goals, I’m sure. I can think of a particular goal he put in the assist to Trezegol, and I’m sure there’s more. I just never liked the dude, he’s an all-right right-back but I think Grygera offers more of an industrious performance and certainly a better temperment.

zebina is an ex-bastard romanista who never fully cemented his position in the left for juve. when thuram was playing on the right he was his backup and when he (thuram) moved to the center and left the position opened for jonathan he never made an impression. the man has totally been cast out of the french national team for ages. i see myself as a supporter and every juventini that is playing for us at the time is welcomed and rooted for but i cant lie i think players like zebina, jorge andrade (who had a promising future with us) and cristiano zanetti are player we can do without. they are spots in our ranks that can be successfully filled by young or other possible acquisitions. INTERISTA PEZZO DI MERDA CI VEDIAMO IL SABATO…FORZA JUVE…
