Round 18: Bury My Heart at Cagliari

By: johncas | January 14th, 2012

Last year, a match against Cagliari in Sardinia was largely considered to be pivotal…well, at the time, at least.  In just his second match with the club, new boy Alessandro Matri had to face off against his old club, in what surely had to be an emotional, heart-wrenching matchup.  And face tee off he did.

matri cagliari

A hero for us and traitorous villain for the Sardinians, Matri would record a brace and provide a modicum of false hope that the season wasn’t actually spiraling horribly out of control (it was).  And with that would go onto win their third consecutive Serie A matchup versus Cagliari, and Matri would go onto score six goals during the teams’ last five meetings — unfortunately three of them would be against us.

As far as the present is concerned, Juventus currently remain in joint 1st with Milan, 2nd on goal differential, with 37 points.  Cagliari, meanwhile are in a respectable 10th place, with 21 points and an almost even -2 goal differential.

While tifosi may be on edge following last week’s squeaker, I’m neither particularly concerned nor disheartened by the performance and the carry over to this week.  First of all, after a long layoff which included an intense training trip to Dubai with a friendly mixed in there, coming home to play away at Lecce, in the middle of a torrential downpour on a saturated pitch, is certainly not the easiest of tasks. The fact of the matter is that this is precisely the type of game that we would not have won in the past two years — at precisely the right time for things to begin to unravel.  Oh, and by the way, we won.  3 points, are 3 points, are 3 points.

The table, meanwhile shows that Cagliari should be a much tougher opponent than Lecce, but we’re back at home with what should be ample time to recalibrate.

Le chiavi: Lots of buzz has been focused around our midfield.  Is Montolivo even a legitimate target as I had hoped he’d be?  Has Marotta moved onto Behrami as someone to challenge our M-V-P midfield for playing time, and both Marcos Motta and Borriello for most idiotic haircut?  Are we really going to splash over 10 m Euros for Fredy Guarin to be a reserve?

Oh, and there’s the issue of Cagliari’s midfield, of which two prominent members of it have substantial connections to Juventus in one way or another.  Radja Nainngolan is apparently both Belgian and sought after by the Juventus management as that elusive vice-Pirlo, while Albin Ekdal is still owned by us and arguably a cheaper, more reasonable, and still talented alternative.  Nevertheless, throw in Andrea Cossu as the third of four midfielders, and this part of the field is looking pretty solid, while being backed up by yet another allegedly-Juve-linked player in defender Davide Astori.  It’s not that difficult to see why this team is firmly planted in the middle of the table.  All eyes will be on our center backs as they look to keep up with Cossu in the hole, as well as the two strikers Cagliari will deploy, while the rest of the midfielders will have to work hard to keep up with one another.

Bad news:  Chiellini is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, but he was playing at left back anyway, where I’m not afraid to say that his skills are practically being wasted.  Instead Paolo DeCeglie will should finally get another stab to show what he can do on the flank.  Maybe this isn’t so bad, or would be worse if Giorgio had been playing at center back where he belongs, with nary a reputable backup.  Instead, Bonucci and Barzagli have become a pretty good tandem in their own right.

Good news:  Marco Borriello.  Just kidding.  About the part that he can/will be a gamechanger, not about the part where he is actually called up.  He has been.  Speaking of which…

My starting xi: (4-3-3) Gigi; Kelso, Boner, Dre, Forrest; Principino, Jon Bon Pirlo, King Arthur; I give up…eh, no I don’t…Dutchie, Matatatatatatatri, Vooch.

Give Pepe a rest.  He’s played well, damn-near has been overachieving thus far, but hasn’t looked as sharp the past couple of matches.

Cagliari probable xi: (4-3-1-2) Agazzi (Ha! sounds funny…A-Gazzi…get it?); Pisano, Canini, Astori, Agostini; Dessena, Ekdal, Nainggolan; Cossu; Larrivey, Ibarbo.

Juve probable xi: (4-3-3) Buffon; De Ceglie, Bonucci, Barzagli, Lichtsteiner; Marchisio, Pirlo, Vidal; Vucinic, Matri, Pepe.

There are rumors that we're after Behrami. What do you guys think of him? Is he better than Pazienza?
  • Giles09
Hes a less good passer, but a more, aggressive, read: crazy, type of player.
He is actually very energetic. But Im not that sure. I think Radja and Cáceres/Kolarov would be better.
Guarín on the summer. Alongside Damiao/Torres and Shaqiri.
That should do the Champions League, haha!

Poor lucchini for getting a second yellow for a nonexistent foul on Rocchi. Clear dive.

    he is suriously talented
  • Bought him in FM 11, he was beastly. Never watched him play though.

Watching him dominate Valencia almost single-handed. Really positive attacking player, and only 20 years old.

I haven't seen that much of him, but if he plays like that regularly, he could certainly contribute significantly in a Juve squad, maybe next year? Under contract till 2015 though...
  • Just saw some highlights of him. Great technical skill.

LA is losing atm against the Crappers :(
  • eve
I know!! That's my worry.... I would prefer if he ended up going to Dallas or NJ....anywhere but the Clips..

I wonder if Kobe is willing to alter his contract to give the Lakers the cap space that they need?
  • BAGGIO10
Kobe would take a salary cut if it means a ring, i'm sure he would, he's 33-34 now and makes tons of money from other sources.
  • eve
You're forgetting he's gotta pay spousal and child support, apart from the divorce settlement.
  • eve
    It's more like the Floppers.
    The officiating has been horrible.
  • BAGGIO10
What did you expect? the refs are always against LA, only Kobe gets good calls usually and that's because of his rep.
  • eve
I actually like Mike Brown. I wasn't excited about him at first. But, he comes from the SA coaching staff, and I have a lot of respect for Popovich. This transition is going to take time, the question is will it be able to give Kobe another ring before he retires bc the west is looking pretty competitive and the Lakers need to cut down on their salary cap.

Honestly I feel we just need a young, fast PG. And it will be enough to compete for a couple of years while Kobe is still here.

Damn just when we bad mouth Fish he comes up big in clutch time against the MAVS. LOL
  • BAGGIO10
LOL no one can doubt Fish, he is always clutch, the guy has been Kobe's "robin" for years. Popovich is one of the best coaches if not the best imo.

CP3 should have came to LA, its done now though, i just cant seem to forget it kinda left a bitter taste in my mouth.

We will see how the year goes or if any trades are done, but we def need an all-star caliber player in our lineup, preferably a PG.
  • eve
Ditto on Pop. Even though Phil has 11 rings, I have always considered Pop to be above him in coaching, considering what he has to work with!!

Uhh, I want this DH12 issue to be resolved. I think I will cry if he ends up with the Clips.

With the Clips suddenly emerging and challenging the LAKERS, Jim is gonna have to get someone to settle this rivalry!
  • BAGGIO10
D12 going to the clips would be a tragedy. He could go there and pull a Miami, but they would be better balanced, i think with possibly the best PG and C in the league, they got a good shot, plus Griffin ain't too bad either.
  • eve
I agree on the CP3 deal. I still thought the Lakers were giving up too much length. But who knows what other moves they had in place.

I was wondering why they weren't making a move for Kevin Martin in that deal. I have liked him since his days in Sac-town.

I'm wondering what moves they will make before the trade deadline. Bynum has been playing really good. And I'm in love with McRoberts, that was a great find from Mitch.
  • BAGGIO10
For CP3, we weren't giving up that much, thats my feeling anyways, we need a good point guard, we have needed one for years. I know we are all about the triangle offense but still lol.

Im keeping my hopes up for DH12, if he comes then screw Bynum.
