Mercato Madness Continues: Midfield Options

By: johncas | January 6th, 2012

Well, since I guess I dropped the ball and the window is now officially open, I can’t call it a preview anymore.  No matter.  We’ll continue our discussions all month long, in all its madness.

As I’ve previously discussed, perhaps second only to our defensive need(s), is another midfield option, particularly now that Conte has shelved his typical 4-4-2 (4-2-4 for our hipster readers) in favor of a 4-3-3 of sorts.  While plenty of options are available, neither Pazienza nor Marrone can do what Pirlo can do.  Meanwhile, the three-man midfield means both Vidal and Marchessi (you heard it here first!) are always fielded at the same time, leaving reserve options thin at the CM role and consequentially a surplus of wingers (but that’s another issue for another day).  One thing that thus now seems clear is a new center midfielder will be on its way.

The probable choice:

I wouldn’t have even thought of David Pizarro a week ago, but all signs seem to be pointing to him as being the winter midfield reinforcement.

Why it could happen:  Apparently, we’re trying to sign Roma’s entire bench.

"Don't worry, Marco...David...Luca...we'll all be together again soon!"

"Don't worry, Marco...David...Luca...we'll all be together again soon!"

Until we end up signing Francesco Totti in our neverending effort to a) sign as many ex-Romanisti as possible, and b) collect as many 2006 World Cup winners as possible, we’ll be satisfying the former with Pizzaro on board.  He’s been out of favor with Luis Enrique, is an underrated deep-lying playmaker, and can be had on the cheap, and preferably on loan.  It wouldn’t be the worst move ever but, at 32, he’s certainly not the heir to Pirlo.  Which could make sense if there is another long-term contingency in place such as bringing Giondonato or Ekdal, if he even still exists at this point (seriously, has anyone heard from him?), back to play that role.  Of course, we still have Gabriel Appelt who is just now eligible to play with the first team, but undoubtedly won’t be ready just yet.  Perhaps some combination of Pirlo with Pizarro as his backup can get us through the next 1-2 years until Gabby is (inshallah) Serie A-caliber?

OR perhaps there’s another plan.

The “makes sense…” option:

Juventus and Fiorentina have a long history.  Of course, people always think bitterness, but that animosity is typically reserved amongst fans and, more frequently, the ones in purple who are all too used to being the less successful rival.  What’s worse for them are the number of high profile transfers that went from Florence to Turin, not the other way around.  Roberto Baggio is probably the most high profile and outrageous of all time, and less we forget Felipe Melo.  Certainly Riccardo Montolivo in black and white wouldn’t be the craziest thing I’ve seen all year.

Riccardo-Montolivo-006

"Please don't make me put that stupid purple shirt on again!"

Why it could happen:  Well first of all, he’s refused to sign an extension with Fiorentina, and his contract is up in June.  Milan have long been named as admirers, but the interest seemed at its peak around last summer, when conventional wisdom was they hoped to pry him away from Fiorentina, using the fear of losing him for nothing as leverage to secure his services for a nominal fee.  Since then, Milan have signed Alberto Aquilani on a cheap loan with a cheap right of redemption, and Antonio Nocerino, also on the cheap.  And they still have a bunch of other midfielders on their books.

Meanwhile, this would make sense for Juventus.  It fits the Italian policy which Marotta swears by, as well as the cheapskate policy.  It would add a 26-year-old vice Pirlo to the squad.  And it would suit the team’s needs and formation.

Late last July, Vucinic was signed, Sissoko and Melo were offloaded and suddenly there were rumors that Juventus would try and return Aquilani to Turin, with Conte switching to a 4-3-3.  While it was probably nothing more than a mere rumor, the formation switch proved prophetic, and the need for another Aquilani type is now there.  I’d rate Montolivo on about Aquilani’s level and if Juventus don’t work out an inexpensive deal for him this month, I wouldn’t be surprised if they use January to work out a pre-contract with him for June, ala Reto Ziegler.  The latter is more likely in my opinion; particularly if the Pizarro deal goes through, and it’s simply a loan with a non-binding option.

The fantacalcio category:

Every mercato analysis could use one of these, and that’s pure fantasy.  But Montolivo isn’t the only Italian international midfielder who is up on a Bosmon come this summer.  That’s right.  I’m talking about you-know-who…

This could be all ours!

This could be all ours!

D-D-R!

Why it could happen:  Italian?  Check.  2006 World Champion?  Check.  Roma pedigree?  Check.  No transfer fee?  CHECK!

And because I want it to.  Unfortunately, I may be the only one.

No, he doesn’t fit the vice Pirlo role — he’s simply not that kind of player, but he’s clearly world class.  And he’s recently shown that he can play center back in a pinch, and do it well.  Didn’t we need an extra one of those?

Why it won’t happen:  He doesn’t fit the vice Pirlo role.  And, he’s Roma’s favorite son, second only right now to Totti.  If he does leave Roma, he probably won’t stay in Italy.  Period.

As it stands, the most likely scenario would be Pizarro.  Although, at the end of the day, the only move that has officially been made is for the position where we have the least area of need.  Great.

What do you think?  Who would you all like to see?  Anyone else?  Discuss.

the question is immobile the player to replace del piero...?

    del piero age: 19 - 23 statistics:
    @ 19 he scored: 5 in 11 games
    @ 20 he scored: 8 in 29 games
    @ 21 he scored: 6 in 29 games and 2 in 11 in europe
    @ 22 he scored: 8 in 22 games and 7 in 9 in europe
    @ 23 he scored: 21 in 32 games and 10 in 10 europe!!!!

del piero in serie b scored 20 goals in 35 apps and came back to serie a next season to score 21 goals in 37 apps
immobile has scored 13 in 19 games in serie b and he is 21 years of age.. he will come back to us next year and he still has more games left.. is it possible for him to score above 20 and is he worthy of the juventus shirt + replacing 4 (maybe 5) involving del piero, iuaquinta, toni, amauri (most likely borriello)

    a little TREZEGOL stats:
@23 he scored: 14 in 25 games and 1 in 5 europe apps
@24 he scored: 24 in 34 games and 8 in 10 europe apps

Why not Palombo? I would prefer him over the other realistic options but have nothing against Montolivo or Pizarro. I like Pazienza but wouldn't mind selling him if there was a possibility of signing both Palombo and Montolivo.

  • juvealways

About the "De Rossi will never sign for another club in Italy" line, think about others for whom such things have been said in the past (and I am writing only the ones I remember clearly, where I've heard such comments, so there are many others, no doubt): Altobelli with Inter (he was their bandiera and a real class act, something you wouldn't expect from the merda), Baggio in Fiorentina (the man himself was unwilling to leave, let alone the fans and the club unwilling to let him go!), Zambrotta (7 seasons with us, and don't say "calciopoli"), Batistuta (9 seasons and his golden age with Fiorentina), et cetera.

The point is, even when a player becomes associated with a club to the extent De Rossi is with Roma, nothing is off the table.

These things have happened before, they will happen again.

  • johncas

You're right...nothing is ever impossible, I am just saying it's unlikely in my uneducated opinion, that's all.  Whereas Montolivo wouldn't shock me, De Rossi would.

  • juvealways

    I agree, it's very unlikely.

And true, Montolivo is much more probable (as much as I distrust his performance; he reminds me of a footballing version of a counterfeiter).

  • runekai250

Lets take a moment and remember...

Since when was any of Marotta deal predictable?

The sale of Diego? The cancellation of Trezeguet? The signing of Quags, Pepe, Vucinic?

I didnt even know who were Bazragli and Matri were before Juve.(blame it on my ignorance in calcio)

And we signed the unusual striker also known as Boriello.

Lets hope he shocks us :D

  • juvealways

True, but in terms of the sheer bombshell it would be, De Rossi would be the biggest deal of his life and career by a long mile. Here's to hoping, against all odds.

  • Robee

Just a little note that is actually undebateable, but... Bringing in Cassano and therefor someone who almost single-handedly brought CL preliminaries to Samp would be bigger in my opinion. De Rossi going to the biggest team in Italy would be normal... A superstar like Cassano going to Samp was not.

  • Muscat

i want aly cissokho and ricky montolivo both want to leave the club. if de rossi comes to juve im going to italy!!!! juve roma would be bananas

  • GiGi_1

De Rossi, Vucinic, Borrielol, Pizarro and Pepe ? Romanisti's lungs will collapse from the continued booing they'll receive

  • runekai250

    Add in Lich too..

  • talking bout players.. do you think Pasquato and immobile  would be good enough to get a few minutes of the end of a few matches next year and then maybe get A LOT of time during coppa italia or games dat dont matter (like if we have Qualified for CL and it wont change our position) that would really mature them.. its the same thing we did with giovinco and marchisio

NEED A ANSWER ... i like reading oppinions

  • Here's what I think:

    - Immobile. We should really bring him back next season. He has scored 13 goals in half a season in Serie B. True, it's a lower division than Serie A, but it's just as hard scoring goals there. As I remember, our own Capitano managed to win the top scorer award in 06/07 with 20 goals in Serie B (just for comparison). We might have an abundance of strikers this season, but that's about to change for next season. The lanky bastards (Amauri, Iaquinta, Toni) are definitely leaving. Our Capitano is also leaving comes the end of this season (still can't believe it). And I hope we won't buy Borriello unless he scores 15+ goals this half season. That leaves Matri, Vucinic, and Quags for the striker position. And seeing that now we have a realistic chance of playing in CL next season (as you pointed out), we need more than those 3 strikers. We can do with two more strikers, and one of them should be Immobile.

    - Pasquato. He could be the other striker I mentioned, but I have doubts over him. I liked what I saw in the pre-season, but he's not really impressing at Lecce (statistic-wise, as I don't get to see him play every week, and let's hope he doesn't start impressing tomorrow). He's at an awkward age too now. He's 22, which is still considered young in Italy, but not so young anymore. I, personally will be glad if Conte decides to bring him back and guide him, but I won't hold my breath.

  • GiGi_1

Well, I think I speak for everyone when I say:

I would rather see Ciro Immobile than BorrielLOL.

  • bulle

I'm not ready to write off Borriello that quickly. Give him five months to prove his worth. If both Conte and Marotta believes in him, there must be something there.

Only bring back Immobile if he's ready and he can get enough playing time to keep developing. Otherwise sell half of him or extend the loan to a Serie A club.

  • GiGi_1

stop being rational and hate borrielol !

  • XhakaJuve

"Neither Pazienza nor Marrone can do what Pirlo can do". Well if you look at it that way nobody can do what Pirlo does hahaha

  • Hahaha... good point.

  • johncas

Montolivo can at least play the role.  Marrone to a lesser extent, and Pazienza can't at all.
