Juventus v. Milan: An Italian Classic

By: roberto | March 2nd, 2011

With the big game coming up on Saturday, we thought we would have some friendly discussion while we are all still speaking. So bloggers from The Juventus Offside, The Milan Offside and the new Milan Obsession blogs have each taken a few minutes to answer the same five questions in this collaborative post. You will find a different sampling of their answers at each blog, so feel free to visit each one to get them all and to join in the discussion! – Elaine

Italian-Gothic

“Italian Gothic”

1) Which of your team’s player(s) will make the biggest difference for this matchup? Which player(s) from the opposition will cause your team the most trouble?

Gianfranco: Cassano, Cassano, Cassano, in the last match if you recall Milan played well they just couldn’t find that final pass or finishing touch, with Cassano on the pitch you have to believe that won’t be the case any longer! Can I say Luca Toni so we can all have a good laugh?? I am kidding, but if defensively Chiellini can get the best of Zlatan then Milan will have trouble, Juventus lack a real threat in the attack since Krasic has blown hot and cold so defending will be of the utmost importance to them on this day.

Jorid: As far as Juventus is concerned, I’m going to have to go with 2 players instead of one: Chiellini and Martinez. The first is an obvious choice, he’s been the defensive leader of the team for years now, his contribution is immense and every time he and Zlatan face one another, sparks fly. With Aquilani injured and Pepe suspended, Marchisio will line up in his natural CM role, while I expect Martinez to start at left wing. Jorge’s season has not been great so far but it was exactly against Milan at the San Siro that he played arguably his best football as a Juventino (same game he picked up an injury in) and I think he’s finally due for a convincing performance. As far as Juve’s biggest red and black headache, do I really have to even address this? Zlatan, Zlatan and more Zlatan. His quality and dominant presence is a match made in hell for a Juventus defense that has conceded 2 goals a piece against Lecce first and Bologna a week later and is looking awfully shaky, distracted and fairly slow.

2) Both teams have dropped points since the beginning of the calendar year. Which team do you think is most likely to step it up for this game? Explain.

Gianfranco: Milan need the win, if you look back at the big losses in the first half of the campaign Juventus and Roma stick out like sore thumbs. If you reverse the results you don’t only get six points but you do what Title winning teams do, and that is not to lose twice to the same team! No doubt Juventus will come to play at home, but Milan need this one.

Aaron: Both- They each have massive motivations to do well, Milan to continue their Scudetto push, and Juve, to restore some kind of dignity. We’ve been shit the last month, but we did beat Inter at home.

Roberto: If you had asked this question two weeks ago, my answer would be Juventus. However fortunes in football can change dramatically in an instant and after the events that recently occurred to my club, my answer has changed as well. The team, who regrettably had only gotten fired up for big matches, has now seemingly lost their belief and self-esteem almost entirely. For that reason I expect Bianconeri to step-aside, rather than step it up.

3) Both teams have been plagued by injuries this season. If you could have one player back for this match who is out injured, who would it be?

Jovan: Pirlo, no doubt. Milan’s been missing a proper link between defense and attack.

Hugh: I expect a lot of Juve fans would say Quagliarella given his rich vein of form before Christmas and how badly the team has flopped since his injury, but for me it would actually be De Ceglie. Full-back problems have been the bane of our season hence moving Chiellini there recently. Before his injury, De Ceglie was starting to look like he was turning into a more than adequate LD and were he fit, and it’s proven impossible to replace him from a defending or attacking perspective.

4) Putting only tactics head to head, which coach do you think would take this match, Del Neri or Allegri? Why?

Elaine: Allegri. He started out the season with some strange lineups and tactics and substitutions, but has shown a definitive learning curve, even if he’s not perfect. Del Neri, on the other hand seems to be learning from the old Allegri when it comes to lineups and substitutions, so a learning curve going the wrong way.

Roberto: Del Neri’s major concern will be the mental state of his players against Milan, not his on-field formation. However, things don’t look too promising on that front seeing as he had already tried to change their approach ahead of last week’s embarrassing loss at home to Bologna. As a result, one would have to give Allegri the advantage here as his task looks a lot less daunting at this point.

Aaron: Only tactics? Delneri, no doubt. Allegri’s level of tactics is still very nascent, and there’s a lot of evidence he doesn’t really know how to tactically plan out the big games. The game in the San Siro in November was just embarrassing, Allegri had no idea what to do. There’s a lot more to the game than a coaches level of tactics, though. Delneri could get it wrong, no doubt.

5) Juventus won this matchup at the San Siro in October and are now playing at home. Do you think they will sweep this fixture? Your final score prediction?

Elaine: Okay, my marriage may depend on this one. But still, I’ll say Milan takes it, 2-1.

Jorid: I have a strange feeling Juventus will barely win this one. Don’t ask me why. I wouldn’t be surprised if the players squeak out 3 points at home against Milan and calm the waters at Juve momentarily, only to go and disappoint against Cesena…

Someone e,plain to me how we lost to atalanta in the youth cup! We have one of the strongest youth systems in the world, yet we lose to ATALANTA?? I guess I should've expected that when two of our 3 biggest stars were not starting (GIANDONATO and LIBERTAZZI, tthe third being Boniperti). I think tthey definitely should've been starting as well as Ferrero, and dammit, we need Pasquato, F. Rossi, and Marrone back. A 442 would look beautiful like this:

    ------------------------Constantino
    Romano------Camilieri------Ferrero------Belfasti
    F. Rossi----Giandonato----Marrone----Boniperti
    ------------------Giannetti----Libertazzi

It could be even better if we could get pasquato back too like I said before,.but I think he's the most ready out of the whole team pretty much to be promoted so id likevto get him back, but have him on the snior side on a consistent basis, whereas the others such as rossi, boniperti, marrone, giandonato, libertazzi, and giannetti should get some chanves to shinebfor the snior side, but should mainly stick to the youth side for another year or so or until their ready. But if pasquato would come back to our youth squad, I would take out giannetti, put in boniperti up front and nput pasquato on the left wing. That would be an absolutely dominant lineup.

Also, can somone tell me what happenned to Seba's brother Giuseppe Giovinco? What about Immobile?

  • Giuseppe Giovinco is on loan at Carrarese. He's been doing okay but he's nothing special. Ciro is at Grossetto, after not getting many chances at Conte's Siena.

  • Chiellini should be fit for the game on Saturday, while Aquilani and PDC (WHEN THE HELL WILL HE BE BACK!?) will most likely miss out.

Chiellini, after two days of training separately, returned to the group, while Pepe, De Ceglie and Aquilani worked separately.

And lastly, Rizzoli will be the ref for the game. He reffed for our 1-1 draw with Roma earlier this season.(http://juventus.com/site/eng/N...

Bad news: our poor boys at the Viareggio tournament lost today 3-1 to Atalanta. It doesn't need to be mentioned but I will most certainly be rooting for them over i Merda!

  • Still proud of nostro ragazzi though, they have a tremendous future ahead of them for sure=)

    Forza Atalanta then, no? ;-)

Amauri actually scores two great goals in this match-up. Too bad this was probably his last Serie double. I have no idea if this is true but it certainly would not surprise me.
In any event, this is an awesome highlight to watch to gear up for the game on Saturday!

  • AlbionArks

i will never forget this game, this was when i truly became a marchisio fanboy.he really dominated the midfield, eventhough it didn't really show in the highlights.he was an absolute monster and pirlo was his bitch.hoping the lads can put in performances like this till the end of the season, cos the way i see it we have to win every one of our remaining games, the concentration levels have to be top notch and the belief that we have a decent team, that on our day can beat any team in the league, must prevail in the players' mindset.

  • dweb

Quanti campioni ne avevamo in quella squadra? Grande Juve!

  • Piu di adesso senza dubbio.

  • AlbionArks

um my italian is not very good, but i'm guessing you're asking me how many champions we've got in our current squad

  • dweb

Even though it was only a few years ago, that team makes me drool. Trezegol, Del Piero, Nedved, Camo, Buffon, Chiellini. Other scrubs mixed in the squad(*cough* Tiago and Molinaro *cough*), that is true. But how much do I miss the chance to see Nedved and Camo supplying assist upon assist to the great Frenchman!

  • Jenny G

Marchisio was the only one who was actually trying for the past two games, in my opinion. I love Marchisio, I even try to imitate his style of playing when I play too.

  • W

"Huge gratitude/appreciation/recognition has got to go out to Aquaman for staying fit for (pretty much) the whole season despite players dropping dead like flies all around him earlier this season! Grande Alberto!"

YOU JINXED IT! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY! WHAT DID AQUILANI EVER DO TO YOU TO DESERVE YOUR UNINTENDED WRATH??!

  • Ooh damn, I think that was me that said that actually=P

Yeah it was me that said that, well done for finding me lol, what can I say, I guess I don't know my own strength^^

  • Oooo! Now where did I put that hair gel....?

  • Comrade

Now Van Gaal is linked to us. Hmmmmmm.......

  • Never like him. He reminds me of someone, though:

And this is how the players will revolt less than a year later lol:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • Somnath_Sengupta

van Gaal is one egoistic coach that Juve can avoid right now. He toggles between genius and madman. With a thin squad that we have his chopping and changing wont improve our standing. However, he does have a sparkling record in terms of giving big breaks to youngsters.

  • If anything, as Luca Toni confessed a few weeks ago, we know for sure that Van Gaal has a huge pair of balls in every meaning of the word.

But let's leave Delneri where he is at least until the end of the season. If we're really going to change at the end of the season though:

Deschamps, Lippi, Conte or Villas Boas.

  • JoseR

Who is this Villas Boas guy I keep hearing?, is he any good?. I would rather have Deschamps or Conte, they know the club and they know Serie A (Deschamps on top has won stuff). Lippi is not the future.

  • Villas Boas is Mourinho's former assistant at Porto, Chelski, merda who is just 33, but has nearly a 15 year career in non-playing roles already. He's Portuguese and Porto's current manager.

From what I've read around, he's an excellent connoisseur of tactics who likes to play an even more offensive playing style than The Whiny One employed while at Chelsea.

What's pretty interesting is that his personality doesn't seem like that of Mourinho though. He looks to be far more normal, although very self-confident as well.

Porto is currently leading Liga Sagres after 21 weeks played. They have 19 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses, the best attack in the league, the best defense in the league (7 goals allowed in 21 games).

Villas Boas' favorite tactic is a 4-3-3 with very offensive wingers.

In 42 games he's been in charge of Porto, he's won 36, drawn 3 and lost 3. 97 goals scored, 24 goals against.

Pretty impressive for a 33 year old.

I probably shouldn't want a manager whose team I've barely seen play be our next manager as well but everything about him seems very impressive. Deschamps is still my first choice though.

  • JoseR

Thanks, that is very informative. A 4-3-3 would be a sweet formation for this squad

  • pablouv

I don't know. Maybe he would be ok, but I've read around he is the "next Mourinho", and I'm kinda tired of getting the "next (insert here your footballer or manager of your choice)". Lets get the "current something" for a change!

  • Sampath

"Villas Boas' favorite tactic is a 4-3-3 with very offensive wingers."

EXACTLY what i want and what this team needs. I knew of this guy for a while, his stats as an ass man were immense in FM. Been a fan of him for a while

  • Yeah, I remember I used to hire him as a scout in 2008, every single mental attribute of his was 17+, top notch scout(which he was one in real life prior to becoming Mou's assistant).

  • W

"his stats as an ass man were immense"
    ...
LOL. Alright maybe I'm being a little juvenile but that was fucking hilarious.

  • Sampath

ass man meaning assistant manager ofcourse! haha

  • Comrade

Definitely not now. I would never ever like to see a coach get fired mid-season. Amongst many names thrown at us in the past month or so, I found this one to be most interesting.

  • PaulPuzzo

Agree with you. Sacking a coach mid season has never done good for the long term (Look at Ferrara, Zac, Ranieri at Roma, they all end up with another sacking in the mid of the following season). Del Neri has to go at the end of the season. Start with a new coach with experience and winning characteristic. Villas Boaz sounds good but I've never seen his team played. I am with everyone here.. let's beg Deschamp to come back.

  • Blanda_Amania

This is awesome guys. Fab artwork. BRING IT, MILAN!!!!

  • You got it sister! It is ON.
(Be careful what you ask for!)
    ;)

  • Blanda_Amania

Let's do this! It's ON like Donkey Kong!(removing earrings and heels & passing the baby to her Daddy) ;)

Look at me starting stuff. I feel so feisty, hehe..

  • Girl Fight!! :)

(Seriously, I love this fixture. Hope it's a great game!!)

  • Blanda_Amania

Meeeooooow!!! (I hope it'll be awesome too with lots of drama and intensity!!!)

  • Weirded out & turned on at the same time here...
