Juventus v. Fulham: Europa continua…

By: roberto | March 11th, 2010

The Cottagers are in town for the first leg of our sweet sixteen grouping. Tonight Zaccheroni’s men will have to suspend their belief that they belong in UEFA’s big boy tournament, and focus on a team that’s in great shape, ready for the attention they’ll receive if things go according to their plan. For Juventus, that means forgetting the posh neighbourhood of European glory we grew up in, folding back those Italian designer label sleeves of ours, and fighting a hard working man who deserves a shot at what little bragging rights of ours remain this season. Full preview in conjunction with the Fulham Offside after the jump.

Lapo can be such a moron sometimes though. My poor Raptors.

First a quick background look at Fulham. They were founded in 1879 in a borough of London. The club has spent the last nine seasons in the top flight of English football and finished seventhoverall last year and currently sit eighth or tenth so far this season, depending on how you look at the table. Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed owns the club and they play their football at the stadium known as Craven Cottage, on the very same grounds where the club began their professional football more then one century ago.

Their coach, Roy Hodgson, is in fact no stranger to Italian football. The sixty-two year old coached none other than Inter from the 5th of October in 1995 to the 25th of May 1997, where he guided them to 7th and 3rd place finishes respectfully before he was eventually replaced by Luigi Simoni. Then after a brief stint back in England withBlackburn, he returned to the helm of Inter for about a month in 1999, before moving to Udinese’s bench on the 21th of June 2001 to the 10th of December 2001.

Hodgson’s pre-match thoughts:

“For us it is of great satisfaction having made it to this point and being able to play against a great team like Juventus. It is the crowning of all we have done in recent years, but we do not want to stop here and want to keep improving, conscious of the fact that there is still much to be done to reach the level of clubs like Juventus, Inter, Milan, Chelsea or Liverpool.

I don’t think that the fact that I am ahead of Zaccheroni counts. It depends on the teams we coached in the past. It will not be a duel between two coaches but between two teams. Here in Italy, I was happy and I like to return. Inter? Tomorrow’s match has nothing to do with my previous experience. I am only interested in Fulham now.

Ever since we are children we hear people speaking of Juventus and everybody would like to play against them and this is why we are awaiting the match with great anxiousness and excitement. Juve is always Juve, even though it is not going through its best season. We know we will be playing against a European heavyweight but we will try to give our best to obtain a positive result.”

If any of you guys and girls want to check out Fulham’s take on things, visit Tim at the Fulham Offside for some more information about the game. For the first leg, Tim had prepared some questions for the Juventus Offside to enlighten his supporters about our season this year to which we answered, and he gladly did the same for us.

How would you describe Fulham’s present form?

Our form is the best it’s been in years. We led the league form table in February, gaining 11 points from 5 games. We also knocked off cup-holders ShaktarDonetsk, advanced to the FA Cup Quarterfinals, and only conceded one goal (okay, two, but one was a own goal) the entire month of February. Compared to a truly awful January things are great right now, but could change on a dime — March throws up some tough opponents with you, United, City, and Spurs.

Who are your top players available/injured at the moment?

Our captain Danny Murphy will be unavailable because of suspension, and Andy Johnson, Clint Dempsey and John Paintsil are all out with long term injuries. But other than that play makers Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff should start, as with defense stalwarts Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes.

What style/formation of football does your coach like to play?

Since Andy Johnson has been in and out most of the season, Roy Hodgson has ditched the standard 4-4-2 with a complex formation that is defensively a 4-5-1 and offensively a 4-4-1-1, if not at times a 4-3-2-1. Fulham play a nice mix of pretty passing and efficient crossing — some say Arsenal-lite.

If you could describe your club in one word, what would it be?

Community. From the manager, to the players, to the fans, to the stadium — supporting Fulham feels like supporting a museum or charitable trust. I don’t feel like I am supporting a money making machine, but a club and fans that care.

If you could change any one thing about your club, what would you do?

I would find a way to expand the stadium so to increase the revenue. But that would be tricky as Craven Cottage is a gorgeous old stadium that is similar to Fenway Park or Wrigley Field in being small and historic.

Who is Fulham’s most hated rival in London?

Officially it is Chelsea. I think our stadiums are like a mile apart or something. QPR are second, but they’re a division below us. I, and others, have developed a huge disliking toward West Ham in recent times.

Are you happy the way Roy Hodgson is running the show? If not who would you prefer?

Oh my lord yes. Besides Mohammed Al Fayed purchasing the club from the brink of extinction, Roy is probably the best thing that happened to Fulham.

Zaccheroni’s pre-match thoughts:

“We will be facing a strong , compact team that knows what it wants and how to get there. It is the classical English team, robust and which has great team spirit. I know Hodgson well. He is a well balanced coach who does not try to overdo things and against whom you must keep a close look. It will be an important match but we must remember that it is 180 minutes long.

In the last few days I managed to have back a number of players, even though on a part-time basis. The important thing is not to end up with the same 11 players for 3 consecutive matches. I hope I will soon have at least three fourths of the squad available soon, so that we can be competitive on all fronts. Sissoko should be fit, Marchisio was in bed yesterday and we will have to see how he is feeling today. Melo is suspended. Poulsen? He is not yet 90 minutes ready but he is experienced , has a great personality and knows how to manage. If I field him he will know how to use his energy, just like Camoranesi. Caceres is the player who is most in doubt. I do not want to force anyone. I will wait till tomorrow to take such decisions.

We must still find the right equilibrium to help the strikers. I asked David to help the team out a lot, even because somebody like him is not waiting for me to teach him how to score. We must put him in the right condition to do what he knows best.”

Fulham is definitely not to be taken lightly tonight, as Zola echoed Zaccheroni’s sentiments. The club had to go through reigning Europa League champions Shaktar Donetsk to get here, in addition, they’ve also made it to the FA cup quarter-finals where they’re up against Tottenham. Time will tell if they’re being stretched too thin or not, however one thing’s for sure they’re certainly not lacking in the confidence department right now. They do have a couple of injuries right now, as Tim mentioned above, namely Andrew Johnson, Clint Dempsey, John Pantsil and Kagisho Dikgacoi. On-loan defender Nicky Shorey is cup-tied and Danny Murphy is suspended.

Probable: Schwarzer; Baird, Hughes, Hangeland, Kelly; Duff, Greening, Etuhu, Davies; Gera; Zamora.

Juventus really need to have a consistent effort here for 90 mins if we want to advance in this competition. Playing at home means that we cannot under any circumstances allow them to run up the away goals. Unfortunately that might be translated into us ‘parking the bus’ and ‘battening down the hatches’. Wrong. Without Chiellini, or Buffon in this one, our best defense has to be a good offense. Diego will be crucial here as always, as well as Camoranesi and Sissoko. Hopefully the break against Fiorentina gave Del Piero and Cannavaro some good rest, and they can both contribute in their respective roles. Please, Dear God contribute Alex. Melo is suspended, Marchisio is still sick I think, Poulsen isn’t 100%, Amauri is out injured, Giovinco isn’t called-up, but Salihams, Iaquinta, and Zebina could be featured.

Probable: Manninger; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Grosso; Camoranesi, Sissoko, Candreva, De Ceglie; Diego; Del Piero, Trezeguet.

Imo..,,We ll negotiate a candreva move.
Criscito doesn t want to come back but ariudo might.

With 3 tight defense giovinco/diego/candreva could run riot.

    Imagine
    ............buffon
    bonucci chiellini ariudo
    caceres. Mommo marcisio pdc/grosso
    Diego/candreva. Giovinco
    Pazzini
  • Rinaldo
Anyone think Van der Vaart would come cheaper than signing Candreva permanently?
  • Day after tomorrow, I mean.. Forgot that today is Friday.
  • Now Milan to win tomorrow and cap off a perfect week.
  • Rinaldo
I’d love for the team to keep him next year as the 4th CB, behind Chiellini, Ranocchia/Bonucci/Kjaer and Ariaudo.

Agree with this, 100%. Chiellini, Bonucci/Ranocchia, Ariaudo and Legro - a very solid and very possible CB core for next season. Forget about Kjaer. While I'm not saying he's overrated, we really should not be spending half our budget on him.

Criscito, Bonucci/Ranocchia, Caceres, and a new forward should be affordable enough for this summer. As for Candreva, as much as I like him, I fear he'll be too expensive. Another RB as backup for Caceres would be nice too (Zaccardo?), while getting rid of Zebina (his goal notwithstanding).
  • Gaetano
Pablo if i m not mistaken, diego and sissoko have both publicly praised zac more than once. Not really saying they want him next year like legro has but still its says something.
  • Pablo
@juve1, what Sofia says is true, juve is the most supported team in Italy, but fans are all spread around the country. Thus it's very difficult to get get 30K+ every week.

On the other hand, Italy has old stadiums and security/violence is an issue. I think building new stadiums is the right way to fix it. The idea is to attract new kind of people to stadiums (families, etc). It will take time, but it can be done. And juve is a pioneer in that in Italy.
  • Pablo
@Mo, I'm not sure how many players have publicly stated that they want to continue with Zac next season. I know Legro was one of them, but I have the feeling it's because Zac is playing him, and he got kinda resentful after the board/Ferrara brought back Cannavaro last summer (maybe rightfully so).

The thing with Legro's support is that both of them (Legro and Zac) are not top class. If Buffon says he wants Zac that would mean something. If Legro (someone who should be a reserve and not starting player if this team actually wants to win some major trophy) says it, I don't know, I get the feeling it would be like getting a 2nd class coach.

Hope I made myself clear. Not disrespect to Legro. I'm glad we have him right now, but I think we should get a real top class defender next season. The same goes for the coach.

juve1: With all due respect, I think you are making it seem far worse than what it is. How is our club in shambles? Financially speaking, Juve has arguably been the healthiest club in Italy post-Calciopoli. We have a brand new stadium in the works, ready to be used in about a year and a half also. One last thing: The maximum capacity of The Olimpico di Torino is only 28000, which is fairly small, and usually it gets around 20000-22000 people on an average. I guarantee you if we make it to the E.L quarters and semis, you'll see it fill up almost entirely.
  • Blanda_Amania
Ivo, I was going to say something earlier about Cannavaro being so short on his contract that he wasn't playing with heart, and then I watched him yesterday and wondered where the heck he's been hiding the beast, ha! Had I not changed my mind about posting that comment, I would have had more words to eat.

Giovino was in training, according to Juve FC site, but separately with Amauri and Chimenti. Geeze, what the heck kind of injury does he have that he still can't full on train? He's just a baby and we all know it wasn't an "overuse" injury.
  • Sofia
juve1 - I know, being a TFC supporter our fans are amazing. In Serie A the attendance has declined and I'm sure one of the reasons is the recession hit Italy pretty hard. With regards to Juve in particular, they have poorer attendance than most top clubs because many of their supporters live in the south and obviously can't really make it to a lot, if any, home matches. A lot of Torino residents support Torino, not Juve.
  • Alastair
"juve1", we don't have franchises in Europe, we have football teams.
  • Mo
As I said earlier "the players know best"! It is they that will go out there and if they feel that Zac is the right person to guide them, which seems to be the case so far, then we he shoulld be given the chance.
  • Gaetano
Candreva, and pdc(we'll really see now that grosso is fit).

Hopefully gio will give a cameo soon.
  • Ivo
Jose, if Zac wins EL and gets third place in the league, then we should definitely stick with him. I am still not sure if he is scudetto winner and CL contender type of coach, but if he gives us a reason, then we might as well find that out next season.

I do disagree on Allegri though. I don't see it being an upgrade from Zac, not the way Prandelli would be. To be frank, I don't know too much about him, but I think Prandelli or Lippi would be more experienced and better respected by the players.

Gaetano, the players do like Zac it seems. Other than PDC, though, who else has seen hope from the youngsters? I wanna see Giovinco play when healthy, and I really want to see Yago play in Diego's position, I think the kid can surprise many. Plus Diego must be dead tired.
  • juve1
The freakin Toronto FC have better attendance the most Italin Teams - Serie a cant draw a lick - What a depressing atmosphere, the columbian leagues look more interesting to watch - No excuse for 11,000 at a game, mid week against Fullham shouldnt matter, outsiders who watch the games in Italy must think they're watching some serie b or c team? Why the heck should they spend money on a new stadium? to get 15,000 people? please. This franchise is in shambles, so is the whole league, its 2nd rate. way behind england, germany and spain.
  • Alto
Guys congrats on a great victory v the (dirty) Cottagers from London. I was rooting for Zebina like it was 2001 in Rome.

With your win, Italy continues its impressive record v the EPL teams this season: 5 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses in 8 matches. In bocca al lupo in the 2nd leg at Craven!
  • Jose
Apparently Prandelli is set to renew his contract with Fiorentina.

    http://www.football-italia.net...

    Three things:

    1) If we don't get Prandelli, I hope we don't go for Benitez.
    2) Stick with Zac only if we win EL and finish in third place in Serie A
    3) Allegri is starting to look good for the job in my opinion. He has Cagliari in 8th place and he is a humble coach. We need someone that teaches our players that tournaments are not won by putting on the jersey but by what we do on the pitch when they have it on, I think Allegri will do that.
  • Gaetano
Well maybe not 100% but i m leaning more towards keeping him.
  • Gaetano
Ivo... I guess you are talkong about this article.

    http://goal.com/en/news/10/ita...

I agree 100% with you. what about other options anyway???We don t need rafa or guus coming and changing things again. The team needs an identity. They are getting the results and so we lll see. So far it seems that the players respect and like zac alot. Time will tell and if the results keep coming, i think the board will find it hard to make yet again another change. Also zac has given the youngsters some hope.
  • Ivo
    Get a grip, Ivo…

Robee, if you actually read what I said you will notice that I was taking blame away from Giovinco since he hasn't really gotten much of a chance (hence the 2 games in 5 years comment).

BostonBobo, that sliding tackle was definitely badass. He just looked confident and determined, like there was nothing or no one going past him that day. As for the fullbacks, I wasn't too bent outta shape about leaving them in - now after they rest well they should be in great shape.

Lastly, Blanda, I could not agree more with you on everyone starting to play better. Some of it I think is Zac, but some if must also be the fact that they couldn't have played any worse than they were. :)

Moggi wants Juve to stick with Zac for a longer time, I somewhat disagree, at least right now. If he does have the squad play like this for most of the rest of the season, then he should definitely be considered to stay. Especially if we get 3rd and are close to winning the EL. Just my thoughts...
  • BostonBobo
Agreed with ivo, I was the first to skewer Cannavaro and Zebina, and I'm honest enough to say they both really impressed today. Cannavaro was perfect in suffocating, frustrating, and totally shutting down Zamora, who's twice his size and twice as fast. That flying slide tackle in the right corner second half was badass. Unfortunately these days, Cannavaro can only work his magic against second-rate strikers like Zamora. Can't picture him doing the same job against a Drogba, Rooney, Torres, Pato, etc...

Zebina also did well today, better first half than second, not sure he is fit enough for 90 anymore...Had some shaky clearances in second half, either out for a corner, only to the edge of the 18, or a couple that just went straight up.

As for Zac, excellent gameplan and had the boys playing hard and compact, but I wasn't crazy about the subs. I think we suffered the last 20 minutes because of them.

Don't agree with playing Marchisio (not only was sick in bed all week, but took a hard shot to the jewels) and Diego (keeps saying he is tired and needs rest, but puts him out there for 90) the full game...Thought he kept Poulsen on about 15 minutes too long....And up 3-1 at the half, you'd think at least one defensive sub would have helped (zebina and grosso both were totally dead the last 15-20 minutes).

Just my thoughts, overall very good performance by the players, and Zac gets credit for a calm, organized squad. Fortunately against Siena we can rest some players that need it, as Camo/Iaq are probably ready to start, and ADP/Melo/Sissoko are rested. Believe it or not, once Giorgo, Amauri, and Gigi are back in the next few weeks, we will have our full squad for the first time since August! Why is it so hard to find an update on Giovinco????
  • Why the hell can Juve only have 11,000 people at a game?

Midweek. Europa. Fulham. Not expecting exactly a cracker.
In any case, dropping Serie A attendance is a well known problem.
  • Mark Giacco
Never mind all the crap mentioned above; Why the hell can Juve only have 11,000 people at a game? This is embarassing and ridiculous...

    What a joke.
  • Grande Juventus
This is how Juve should play and they should also stick with this team.

    -------------Manngiger (Until the King returns)

    Caceres----Legro---Canna---Cheillini

    ------Poulsen/Momo---Marchisio

    Candreva--------Diego------Giovinco

    ------------Trezegol
  • Robee
Exactly what Giovinco should have been doing everytime he played (which, in all honesty, was like 2 games 5 years ago)

    Get a grip, Ivo...
  • Blanda_Amania
I think everyone we've bitched and moaned about has improved somewhat in the last few games, don't you think? Melo was starting to make better decisions, defenders scoring goals (Zebina?!), and I recall someone mentioned how during a particular game, even Amauri was being less of a cry-baby Sally, no? Someone, or something is slowly bringing the best of them. Zac? His coaching style? They were fierce at both ends of the pitch today, and Manninger kicked ass in goal. I'm excited to see how we do on their turf, and we need to take that high pressure game to Siena.
  • Ivo
Only watched the second half today, but here are my top three players:

    1. Cannavaro
    2. Poulsen
    3. Candreva

Cannavaro played with such heart, i couldn't have been more surprised. Poulsen was a beast, and Candreva ran his heart out, putting pressure on the DEFENDERS taking the ball up, and forced turnovers. Exactly what Giovinco should have been doing everytime he played (which, in all honesty, was like 2 games 5 years ago).

Today, after a looong time, I felt genuinely happy for Juve. Lets build on this!! FORZA JUVE!
  • Jorid
    dweb: I'm gay for Chiellini.
Alessio and fellow Juventini Legro fans: I have to admit, lately, Legro has started to really impress me with his performances. He's been reassuring at the back and has scored almost as many goals as Amauri up front...I'd love for the team to keep him next year as the 4th CB, behind Chiellini, Ranocchia/Bonucci/Kjaer and Ariaudo. He could help Ariaudo and Ranocchia(if we hopefully get him or Bonucci) and could serve a Macellazzi at Inter type of role.
  • k13
marchisio is the next conte.. great decision giving him the armband!
  • Gaetano
I guess its too early but doies anyone think zac has any real long term potential?
  • dweb
i was just on the kaiser's personal website and i cant help but feel like he's a giant kid.
"Il mio sogno: poter un giorno alzare la Coppa del Mondo con la maglia della nazionale e vincere la Champions League con i colori bianconeri."
will he be available next thursday for the second leg? any ideas?
  • Blanda_Amania
A captain needs to have the respect of his teammates, and the ability to communicate with them. He must also be even tempered, and diplomatic. If you line candidates up choose the most experienced & most likely to spend close to or all 90 on the pitch, he's gotta have the above qualities as well, imo and experience.
  • I agree with everyone that Camo isn't captain's material, because of his temper. I wouldn't consider Trez either, because he goes anonymous at times but I do like seeing him wear it, as a symbol of his longevity at the club.
  • dweb
    Re: Capt armband.
Marchisio is as much sub-capt material as camo and legro. Remember, he's from Turin and grew up in the youth system. Model player and is growing immensely before our eyes!
  • Sofia
It kinda makes me laugh that when Melo and Amauri are both missing we play one of the best games I think we've played in a long time and we score 3 goals (including one from our striker). I'm just saying...shouldn't this be an "I told ya so" to the management and Zac??
