Juventus travel to Siena

By: agiamba | October 24th, 2009

Siena is a beautiful town, one of the more underrated towns in Italy in a region with the massively overrated cities of Pisa and Florence. (Note: I like Florence, not so much Pisa, but most people act as if Florence is the best place in the world with no comparisons. Not true, same goes for Venice.) Set in the beautiful sleepy Tuscan countryside, Siena is often overlooked by tourists as it is about an hour off the A1 from Florence to Roma, just as it was overlooked by the Romans millenia ago. It is a pretty small city, just 55,000 residents but it you are in Italy, it is definitely a place to check out. Most of the walls from 1,000 years ago still surround the hilltop city, and the Duomo, Cathedral, Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo Pubblico, and the annual Palio horse race are all plenty worth the trip. Juventus travel to this treasure of a city to take on another Bianconeri, AC Siena. Full preview after the jump.

A panorama I took of Siena from the top of the Duomo

Siena is a minnow team of Italy, from a city one half the size of Bergamo, home of the “Queen of the Provinces.” The team gained their first-ever promotion to Serie A in 2002-2003, quite an accomplishment. Juventus has occasionally had troubles with smaller teams, see the plucky fights from Bologna and Livorno earlier this season. For some reason, we’ve always struggled against Catania over the last few seasons. Thankfully, Siena is not one of these teams. In the grand total of 5 league games played in Siena, we have won 4 and lost 1, scoring 12 goals and conceding 2 in the process.

100_2635

The last two years Siena has been something of an underrated miracle. We all talk about the stunning salvation of Cagliari two seasons ago, or the resolve of Chievo last season to avoid relegation, but Siena has managed to stay in Serie A despite extremely limited resources. Mario Beretta led them to salvation 2 seasons ago, and current coach Marco Giampaolo did the same last year, and was linked with several big clubs last summer. He decided to stay, and it will be another tough year for Siena if they are to survive. Right now they are 2nd-to-last in the standings, with only fellow Tuscans Livorno underneath them. They’ve been my pick for relegation for the last 3 years running more or less, and only time will tell if like Reggina, their luck runs out at the end of the season.

CONNECTIONS:
The Bianconeri Alliance- For the last few years, Siena has operated as one of our partner clubs for transfers. Genoa and Empoli did similarly 2 seasons ago, Genoa did too well with our players and Empoli did too poorly. Right now in Serie A it is Siena and Bari that we have a good relationship with. Left-backs Paolo De Ceglie and Cristian Molinaro both spent time on co-ownership in Siena, as Juventus youth product Michele Paolucci is currently doing, alongside Albin Ekdal. Neither have seen much playing time yet, only making 2 and 4 sub appearances respectively, but may be called up in the future to help Siena avoid the dreaded drop to Serie B.
Marco Giampaolo- Rumors say that Giampaolo was one of the possible coaches for Juventus, and he confirmed he was indeed contacted by management this summer. He had a unremarkable playing career, sort of like his younger brother and current Serie C journeyman striker Federico Giampaolo who was in the Juventus Primavera for a few years.

RECENT ENCOUNTERS:
Excellent- As I already stated, we have an 80% record in Siena and last year was notable as in the 2nd-to-last game of the season, Ferrara made his first appearance as head coach. Del Piero scored a brace, assisted on his 2nd by Marchisio, who he had previously assisted for his goal earlier in the match.

RECENT FORM:
Juventus- Improving: (WDLDD)- Hopefully the Maccabi win can help us morale-wise.
Siena- Disastrous: (LDLDL)- A straight ticket to Serie B, on current form.

FORMATIONS AND LINEUPS:

Juventus- (4-2-3-1): With Marchisio and Del Piero out, I think we’re going to stick with the 4-2-3-1 as it worked quite well against Maccabi, creating plenty of chances. Tiago, Marchisio, Salihamidzic, Zebina, and Del Piero are out with injury, but otherwise the roster is fairly full.

In defense, Grygera will likely return as Zebina is taking a well-deserved month’s vacation having played an incredible 30minutes without a break. ItalJuve will retain their places.

In midfield, we will probably again see Sissoko and Melo anchoring the defense, both of whom are impressive to be ready. Sissoko has played a lot since his return from injury, and has not shown any fitness concerns, whereas Melo has recovered from that brutal tackle on Wednesday with just some severe bruising. One or the other may be swapped with Poulsen, who has put in some decent performances recently. I would hope for Giovinco-Diego-Camoranesi to retain their places, as they all worked wonderfully. Some websites have suggested Iaquinta will take Giovinco’s place as a left-winger, and I hope to God not. Based on how Gio played, why on Earth would you take him out? Iaquinta can play that position, but he’s not meant to.

Up top is anyone’s guess. There’s been some reports that Trez is feeling pain in his knee, but there’s no such report on Juventus.com and he’s been included in the squad list. I think we should start him, as I think he’s ideal with the attacking trident up top, unless Amauri is in form, which he is not. Iaquinta might get a choice to start, but he’s cooled down since the first few days of the season.

My XI: (4-2-3-1)- Buffon; Grygera, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Melo, Sissoko; Giovinco, Diego, Camoranesi; Trezeguet
Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1)- Buffon; Grygera, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Melo, Sissoko; Iaquinta, Diego, Camoranesi; Amauri

Maybe it’s 2 years of Ranieri, but Ferrara has just made so much sense lately that I feel it’s high time to be a bit disappointed. I hope I’m wrong.

FBL-ITA-SIENA-JUVENTUS

Siena-Copied from Goal.com’s preview, as I have no idea what is going on in Siena. “Luca Rossettini and Anssi Jaakkola are the only injury concerns. Michele Fini is serving a three match ban. Abdelkader Ghezzal joins him in the stands with a one game suspension.”
Probable Starting XI (4-3-1-2): Curci; Rosi, Terzi, Bardao, Del Grosso; Vergassola, Codrea, Ekdal; Jajlo; Maccarone, Calaio.

KEY PLAYERS:
Juventus-Trezeguet/Iaquinta/Amauri: Whoever the hell is playing prima punta better score. Preferably more than once.
Siena- Massimo Maccarone: The Milan youth-product is not a good striker, but neither is anyone else at Siena. Siena fans will be hoping for him to have a good game

PREVIEWS/LIVEBLOGS AND PREDICTIONS: 3 points are absolutely necessary. Siena is in crisis and will fight hard, but we must win. I am hoping for a 3-0 win.

Ferrara: «We want to win in Siena»
Ciro Ferrara returns to Siena, where at the end of last championship he made his debut on the Juventus bench: «It is a happy memory and return. I will never forget that first match, the excitement, the hotel in which we stayed and where we will also be staying this time and which is exactly overlooking the stadium. For me it was my first match as coach ever and the excitement was great. Returning is a pleasure. I also remember the victory against Siena. I remember everything to the slightest detail: anxiousness, tension, pressure due to the particular moment of the team and obviously he result which coincided with those of Milan and Fiorentina thus favouring us. It was a perfect day».

Turnover – It could be that some players are rested. Nowadays the only periods when we don’t have mid-week matches between now and December is when the national teams are playing. We will have to get used to give breathing space to those who play all the matches. I have an ample squad. I would obviously prefer not to have any injured players but I stress the fact that against Maccabi I has three players in the stands. It is true that there is a greater difficulty when it comes to changes but I can adapt a defender.

Few goals – By seeing the statistics I can tell you that Juventus is amongst the top teams when it comes to shots on goal, goal opportunities and ball possession. The stats are important because they speak of us as creating goal opportunities and attempting many shots at goal, however at the moment we are not managing to finish all of them. It is not however, a question of tactics it is simply a moment and does not represent a problem.

Tactics – On Wednesday in the Champions League I changes formation but in the last few days we worked on both formations. I see that even other teams change tactical approach according to the particular match. On Wednesday Juventus had 19 shots on goal and therefore managed to do so notwithstanding the fact that we had only one striker. However, if now we were to return to the normal tactics I don’t think it would create confusion. It is not a problem with the high level players we have. It is we both solutions that we can have an excellent equilibrium. The formation is of little importance. What are more important are the equilibrium and will fielded in each circumstance.

The match against Maccabi – Wednesday’s approach was good but was conditioned a bit by the final minutes due to the fact that we were forced to win and we were a bit scared of our goal being equalized. We have to avoid this and must always give the impression that we can manage the 1-0 without taking risks.

Three important points – Winning in Siena would win us three points of equal importance to those obtained against Maccabi. It is a tricky away match and one that must be interpreted in the right manner. Giampaolo is risking? I don not know about his situation. I have a good relationship with him and think well of him, but obviously I cannot allow myself to be conditioned by all this. We are thinking exclusively of a victory.

Del Piero – His recovery is proceeding well but we need to examine this day after day in order to have him back at 100%. I think that by the end of the month he will be back with the team even if not in a definite manner.

The players care only about cars? – I am sure that Giovinco and Marchisio, for example, would like to have a Ferrari but I think they are very much concentrated on their work. I agree with Mourinho, however, on the fact that the environment has changed a lot, that there are less values and that sometimes the sporting aspect is of secondary importance. It is ahrd to keep one’s feet on the ground. When a youngster makes it big, after playing one or two matches in the Serie A he is immediately offered conracts worth millions, they think of him with the national team, in other words they give him everything and then they just take it all away at the first moment of difficulty. Pressure comes also from the families. Everybody thinks they have a Maradona at home and then these 14/15 year olds cannot withstand the pressure.

FINAL WORD:

It was a particular afternoon for Claudio Marchisio and Jonathan Zebina. The two players were protagonists at the New Holland Grand Prix organized at the Torino Esposizioni where many stands including a children’s area, information stands and a space called the penalty area in which Jonathan and Claudio took part in a very particular event: with the control panel of a New Holland bulldozer they took part in a penalty shoot out using the arm of the bulldozer to shoot the penalties sending many balls to the back of the net.

«It is always fun to take part in these events – stated Claudio and Jonathan – We were never aboard one of these machines and it was interesting to be able to manoeuvre them». At the end of the event the champions then spent some time with the public, signing autographs and taking photos to the enthusiasm of the many Juventus fans present.

If I can find a video of that, I’ll post it, it sounds hilarious.

Forza Juve!!!!!!

I've heard that rumor, and I don't buy it. Supposedly it explained all the thigh strains, the location is more humid which apparently creates more muscle strains than normal. Supposedly Capello refused to train there because of it. Here's my problems with this story-
#1- Vinovo didn't open until Summer '06, so Capello couldn't train there.
#2- Injuries seem to be on a cycle of every few years. Roma and Inter have similar injury issues yet they have been at their respective training facilities for a while, Inter for 50 years or so.
#3- It doesn't explain why we had few injuries in Serie B.
#4- Supposedly it explains the strains that plagued Zanetti, ADP, Camoranesi, Zebina, Brazzo, etc. Notice their age, among other things. And the recent injury issues, knee meniscus problems (Iaquinta, Buffon, Marchisio) are not explained by the humidity problem.

So basically I think it's bunk, like Robee said, something we are reaching out to, to explain the current problem. I'm guessing training would be an issue, I think it's interesting Ferrara is having the team train a lot harder than under Ranieri as many of the players have stated, but most of the team is relatively healthy.
  • Robee
Vinovo is also named as a possible cause for all the injuries. Something about the surface... Well, people seek causes of course...
  • dan
this injury crisis is a fucking joke, i do not understand if its just plain bad luck, or incompetence from the part of the juve medical board. something needs to be done, even if we have to equip our players with riot gear during a match to prevent injuries. but what annoys me also, is the amount of injuries that are occurring outside of our matches, during training and warm ups. The frequency of these 'non-match' injuries is simply not acceptable for a club like juve, and it shocks me to see that nothing has been done about it. SVEGLIA!
  • agiamba
Juventus.com has reported it. Same issue as Marchisio and Buffon, and from what I've read it is a bad issue for the long-term, as they take some meniscus area out and it doesn't regenerate, so it'll keep getting worse in the future. That's ok for Buffon and Iaquinta who are nearing the end of their careers, but who knows what'll happen to Marchisio.

Between Amauri and Trez, who would you rather start right now? Both are "sorta" getting there.
  • HolyMann
well, i guess then we'll have to stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation since we have too many games for only two strikers....and if Ferrara is insisting on playing with a 4-3-1-2, then he should use Giovinco as a SS

    time to get creative Ciro....
  • wtf is wrong with us??? we are being bombarded with injuries :( The juve medical board should resign :x
  • al
    yea, mike.
    football italia reports it:

    http://football-italia.net/oct...

so, we are left with Amauri and Trez
  • j
well, we can debate all we want, but it is ferrara who makes the decision, i really want to say "in ferrara we trust" (like arsenal). lets hope the team continue to produce results. sampdoria next right? giovinco needs to play from the start. forza la vecchia signora.
  • georg
does he need an eye correction for his horrible aiming lately?
  • mike
...news are that Iaquinta needs a surgery and will be out for at least 40 days....
  • HolyMann
ned lowe, i doubt we're any where near looking like Barca or Arsenal...dont get me wrong, im not saying they're better than us, im just saying our style of playing is waaaay different than theirs and its next to impossible to be like them with the squad at our disposal, once again, im comparing styles only, with Sissoko/Poulsen/and maybe even Melo and two big guys in the attack, its quite difficult to be having a free flowing game....i think the closest we can get to that is with a 4-2-3-1 formation
  • ned lowe
I'm really worried about our recent form. For me the real heartache has been the performance much more than the result...I did'nt expect that we would immediateley begin to look like Barcelona/Arsenal;but we should at least look the part.Save for the game against Roma and spells in the game against Maccabi, we have been dire, very dire. Our forwards do everthing else but score and our midfield is not dictating tempo and play like they should.
I am really worried.Nothing would please me more than to see Ciro succeed and I do not want to begin to imagine that he's not ready for the job...I really do hope the tables turn positively for him soon
  • Lets see what we do against samp.. if Ciro rotated the formation to throw them off... then its a masterstroke
  • Marco
Our target strikers are too out of form to put ANY reliance on them. Please lets not play with the 4 3 1 2. We gave it a run, it is not the right formation. Lets get the ball working with some creativity and pace in the attacking third and play with the 4 2 3 1. With the players we have this is THE BEST FORMATION for JUVE. When our strikers start contributing, and start playing with some killer instinct then we could possibly utilize this formation against teams in the Champions League etc. Caceres should pushes the pace of the game which is a plus. Look to him to either start soon, or games that we come out flat for him to be a def. sub to start picking the tempo up. I think today Molinaro realized that his time with Juve was up, and i hope to only see Trez on the field when we are 10 zero up on team. I love him for what he did for JUVE - but NOONE with ANNNNNY soccer intellegence who have watched him play this season could ever ever ever think he is the key to Juve, or that his the player that he once was - becasue though he gives effort - his runs are poor - he wants to be spoon fed everything. Alessio - Brillant prelude to the game. I love to read you insight mate - Bravo !!!
  • Calisi
I thought today would have been a good time to sub on Giovinco just to give the midfield a different feel. I guess that is what he tried to do with Camoranesi. But I did the same as you alessio, watched it on 360 and boy was it boring.
  • HolyMann
lets wait and see what Ciro has up his sleeve against Sampdoria....true it wasnt beautiful, but he rested many players and got the 3 points
  • mohd
then why don't we play by the players we have instead of crying injury this and injury that play giovinco please
  • HolyMann
im with Alessio on this.....i say we still need a bit more time with the 4-3-1-2

the reason we played well against the Romans was because Marchisio + Tiago were not injured, this helped with keeping Diego ontop instead of him coming down to collect the ball....unfortunately our injury list is hurting our midfield the most, which in turn is hurting the formation.....when the players were there, the points and possession were there
  • agiamba
Hey guys, I just watched the game on replay. Thank you ESPN360, but maybe I should have checked here first to see how awfully boring of a game it would be.

Few things- the formation is good, and we have the players for it- 2/3 trequartistas, 5-6 CMs, etc. Not having a regista hurts, but Diego needs to play farther up. It'll be better once we're not fielding a static midfield (Tiago, Camo, Marchisio each inject a bit of creativity) but we just have not learned the formation yet, which takes time.

#1- Molinaro, thank you again for auditioning. Hopefully this was Ferrara throwning him a bone and now he's cut. De Ceglie played pretty well IMO in midfield, but we should be training him to be a left-back.
#2- Our forwards still don't seem to know wtf is going on.
#3- Is Ferrara's rotation good? I don't know, but it does frustrate me a bit that he takes out so many starters because we have a game on Wednesday, but we got 3 points so I guess that vindicates him.
  • Nnahoj, I think we need a regista if we are to make the
4-3-1-2 work. Otherwise Diego ends up playing too far back to be really effective in the attacking third. And regarding the second striker situation - one is injured and the coach refuses to recognize the other one.
4-2-3-1 is the only way i can see us succeeding with the personnel we have.
  • adam
Tiago cannot play as a backup for Diego, I think Ranieri tried him out as an AM a few games and he failed.
  • mohd
oh i can't wait for samp game we are going be humiliated
  • joe
caceres needs more clock because he looked promising today
  • vialli
I think Juve is in dilemma right now. We have 3 Target Man Striker type, and 1 Second Striker type (ADP). The Most suitable Formation to accomodate this are 4-4-2. With play emphasizing with crosses. Then, we switched to 4-3-1-2 Just to Accomodate 1 person (Diego). From here, the 3 Target man type, need to adapt their play style by not just waiting upfront waiting for the ball.
I'd say our future lies on 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-2-1. Since Trez could be leaving next year, And ADP is quite old.
I think Tiago can easily be converted to AMC an act as a cover for Diego.
  • Nnahoj
Thing is Papai, we have a second striker. I don't think a regista is as necessary. Diego could still drop back to pick up the ball, but at least he would have someone else to take pressure off of him with the creation of chances for the target striker and others.
  • Neo, i hope that too.
  • Neo
I hope that the only reason we didn't see Giovinco today is because he will be played against Samp. Otherwise it is mind baffling why he wasn't played when he was our best outfield player against Macabbi.
  • Nnahoj
Furthermore, Trezeguet was by far the worst player on the pitch today! If he wasn't offside, he wasn't getting in other players' way and even their attempts on goal. Just totally useless. Very disappointing, but not surprising, as that is how it's been for us all season in the striking department. I pray to see Giovinco up front for the Sampa game.
  • Nnahoj
I will take the 3 points...for now...as the result was more important than the performance. But still, this shit cannot go on for much longer! Ciro, much faith was placed in you. Repay us that please. Forza Juve!!!
  • The 4-3-1-2 should be scrapped until we can get a regista and a second striker. We simply lack fluidity in this.
We should have crushed Siena :(
  • hant00
just be glad we didn't slump like roma, lazio, fio, genoa. and later milan, perhaps;)
  • georg
paoblo i realy think it is the system,...
lets be honnest, besides of the roma games, did this formation ever conviced? in 11 games now ( 9 league 2 cl)

both roma games were beurtifull victories but most goals came out of stupid faults of the opponent in sted of great play.(i say most, not all)

i've seen teams opponnents most of the time don't having ANY trouble at all with juve attacks, because they're so goddamn predictable; siena could hav drawed today very easily.

with the 4-2-3-1 the play was more creative and less predictable, and it was the first time we played it, why the hell should you change it as long giovinco is fit, in fine form and not injuried??
  • Nnahoj
I still can't believe we laboured to a 1-0 win at Siena (yes fucking Siena!!!) via set piece - again! I know that there will always be days like this, but these days are becoming all too frequent dred! Juve has yet to get going this season, and I feel when they finally do get going, it will be too late to actually win anything. And the thing that's most infuriating is that it's simple adjustments that could be made and we could be doing so much better. But Ferrara is either reluctant to make those adjustments, or he just does not realize that yet. Either way, it's highly disturbing.
  • j
wow, just when i was wondering about ferrara's future, amauri scored. now, what's wrong with our team, i didnt watch them play since bologna, so i'm not sure whether the problem lies with the quality of the players, form, new formation, etc.
  • Pablo
That was boring, at least we won.
  • ooBia
okay we got all 3 points.. but we need to change ALOT for Samp..
  • ooBia
    thanks Pablo..

and i agree with what u said.. 2 minutes left
  • Jorid
Paloschi just scored for Parma 5 minutes ago. What if we got him for the post-Trez? I've been in love with the kid since he exploded like 3 years ago.(and cause he is a beast in FM lol) He's not exactly like David, but he reminds me of a certain Filippo Inzaghi.
  • Pablo
Yes ooBia, we have a buying option, but it's pretty high. Around 13 mil I think.

And I don't think the system is the problem, it's more like the player's we are using. I everyone got really excited after the 4-2-3-1 of the other day, but if Gio doesn't play there and Ciro uses Iaquinta instead, things might be not so different.
  • georg
yep caseres is great, we hav a buying option yes, but i think it wasnt cheap,... ( around 8m€ or am i wrong?)
