Juventus-Milan Preview; Il Vero Derby d’Italia

By: alessio | December 13th, 2008

Or so Lapo Elkann says. But he’s also known for dabbling in coke and trannies…so take his word for what it’s worth.

Last spring of course was a game we’ll never forget. Exciting, open, terribly nerve-wracking, and a brace from Brazzo. Fanfreakingtastic. But it’s a new day. As you may have noticed from the Milan Offside, this is a collaborative preview between Gianfranco and myself. An interesting way to look at it, other tifosi always consider your situation differently than yourself, so it’s a good read. We may even do an after-words Q&A! Who knows.
One of the aspects I was really looking forward to this game was Poulsen v. Gattuso/Kaka. The three look set to all miss the match. Poulsen and Totti both missed Juventus-Roma. I guess it’s some kind of odd universe karma thing. I hope he gets to face off with them this Spring! Enjoy the preview, ragazzi.

General thoughts on the opposite team?
Alessio: Milan happens to have two of my favorite non-Juventini in the world, Pirlo and Maldini. Both are absolutely tremendous players, when on, they are some of the best in history at their position. Last year there was a lot of mention about how Milan’s squad was virtually the same as the last time we faced off, whereas obviously the Bianconeri have made radical changes. I think Dinho and Sheva were the wrong signings…..they are just going to crowd out Borriello and Pato. Amauri would have been perfect for Milan, although he would have certainly been the replacement for Borriello. If Milan do sign Thiago Silva it’s a good move. It’s a shame Milan only signs Brazilians now, but so it goes. Their backline needs to be refreshed badly. Maldini, Favalli, and Nesta are on their last legs, and Kaladze, Zambrotta, and Jankulovski aren’t exactly young.
Gianfranco: There are few teams and coaches that I respect more in all of Italy than Juventus and Ranieri. Ranieri has always been an intriguing character and what I considered to be a very good judge of talent. For all the credit Jose Mourinho got in his first year at Chelsea, what people forgot to mention was that Ranieri built the foundation of the team that Jose made so famous. Forget the tinkerman for a moment, my respect for Juventus stems on their consistent policy for years and years to groom young Italian players for the National team while giving a home to top notch Italian players as well. This was a formula that Milan was known as for well, but have currently lost their way choosing to feed the Brazilian National team instead. Despite Juventus’s struggles early in the season the team has galvanized and are to be considered a threat and challenger to the scudetto.

What do you like about the other team?
Alessio: They treat their stars well. People might bitch about letting Serginho, Cafu, and the thousand other Milanistas stay too long, but Juve has had a pretty shitty history of prematurely cutting legends careers. They have a superb European record, and a lot of strong traditions.
Gianfranco: Commitment to young Italian players and Italian players in general, their choice to sell Nocerino was a puzzling, but their commitment to players like Giovinco, Chiellini, Marchionni, and Molinaro is envious for any Italian.

What do you not like about the other team?
Alessio: Had they signed Amauri instead of Borriello, their entire attack would be Brazilian. Seriously guys, chill out the jungle fever.
Gianfranco: Nedved. I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t like him but it is probably a menagerie of reasons.

If you could have one player from the other team, who would it be?
Alessio: Pirlo. No more attempts to find a regista.
Gianfranco: Chiellini, we need defense bad and he is potential beast, I would even take Legrottaglia.

Who is your least favorite player on the other team?
Alessio: Zambrotta? Emerson? I don’t really hate anyone on Milan. Except maybe them.
Gianfranco: Nedved here again, again I can’t explain it, maybe it is the hair.

Opponent Scudetto or Inter?
Alessio: Milan, anyday.
Gianfranco: No matter scudetto’s for Inter they are to close as it is!

What is your team’s lineup?
Alessio: 4-4-2 is without question. There are a few selection questions though. Is Camo prepared to start? He dislocated his shoulder a few weeks ago, initially we thought he’d be out till 2009 but he’s been trying to get ready for this game. He didn’t play against BATE, so we’ll see. Legrottaglie is suspended, so Mellberg got a run out on Wednesday to get him somewhat prepared. Center-mid is the last question. Sissoko was suspended for the game against BATE, now he has the flu. He’s been given the next two days off, but could make it. Zanetti surprisingly played a full 90 in his place, but he’s coming off 4-5 months of injury and looked rusty. Ranieri did well to rest Chiellini, ADP and Amauri on Wednesday, but I could not understand why Nedved played nearly the full game.
Juventus: (4-4-2) Manninger; Grygera, Mellberg, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni, Sissoko, Marchisio, Nedved; ADP, Amauri

Gianfranco: It is looking more and more like the XMAS tree will continue to haunt us.
But at least Carletto will have the services of Seedorf and Ambrosini to help offset the loss of Rino. Kaka and Dinho will continue to play behind the striker, most likely Pato, but I no longer have faith that this attacking trident has the side needed to get dirty and win the match which puts an enormous amount of pressure of on Seedorf, Pirlo and Ambro to play more defense, or have a more defense mindset which is not good. The match against Inter earlier in the season, saw a stellar performance from Seedorf but also a strong defensive performance on the flanks from Ambro and Gattuso, who will be missed for his bite in the middle of the park.

How’s the team’s form?

Alessio: Pretty good. We’ve won the last 9 Serie A games in a row or so, barring the slip up at Milan’s bastard cousins Inter. Goalless draws against BATE and Zenit, but we finished 1st in the group. This is a good time to face Milan, if only we were a bit more rested.
Gianfranco: Couldn’t pick a worser time to face Juventus. The injury list is a mess, and the team has lost that rhythm and form that they had earlier in the season. However, this team is always capable of the big match when they are facing a big opponent, and there is no one bigger right now in the Serie A.

MOTM?
Alessio: ADP. He might not get on the scoresheet, but he’s in sensational form right now. When he came on for Amauri on Wednesday, Juve looked a lot more threatening.
Gianfranco: Pirlo. There was a time when this team didn’t function without this man, granted the loss of dependence on him is welcome because it gives him a chance to get some rest and find his form. He needs to reclaim his place as the creative engine on this team, and there is no better stage to do it than this match.

Predicted score? Scorers?
Alessio: 2-1 to the Bianconeri. Amauri to get on the score sheet…and a defender. Maybe Chiellini or Mellberg on a set piece.
Gianfranco: We all know I hate to predict scores, to many factors and so on governing the match. Quite honestly I sense a draw here, but set pieces specifically free kicks, will play huge a role. If you like set pieces this game is a treat ADP, Pirlo, and Dinho all ready to strike the dead ball for the back of the net.

FORZA RAGAZZI!!

adam for me the old guard only includes camo, nedved, t-rez, del piero and buffon because in that moment it was more dificult to them staying in serie b because they were already big champions and any club would like to see them battling their colors “in that moment” thats why I don’t give the same recognition to players like chiellini, zebina, legro, etc

Zebinaaaa……I would have let him go in 2004.

And in my opinion, Tardelli played a lot tougher than Marchisio.

    He’s 22 also…..give him time.

Gio I agree there. Zebina, Chiellini, Marchionni, I’ll always be grateful to them for staying but it was a very different situation. The others could have walked onto virtually any team.

Lol I was only joking about Zebina, I remember him saying that he was “forced” to stay and wanted to leave. He’s no where near the class of our old guard.

Alessandro, would you really be surprised if De Ceglie and Marchisio don’t become starters? Remember that Marchisio is only starting because Poulsen and Zanetti are injured, from what I know about Ranieri he will chose Zanetti or Poulsen over him, which is very sad and disgraceful.

Marchisio- The boys were showered with compliments at the end of the match and Marchisio commented by saying: «I don’t think that I am the new Tardelli. I am a youngster who wants to do well and become a great Juventus player. For now my objective is to make the most of every opportunity that arises and matches like this are really important. However, now that we are recovering all our injured players there will be the need for everyone. I will continue working to create selection difficulties for the coach».

Del Piero- «This is an important victory. It is twice as joyful because they did not stop at any time. The important thing is to continue believing in ourselves. The chance missed? I don’t want to defend myself by seeking excuses but I slipped but luckily it was not important since we won».

Asked whether Juventus are the anti-Inter or anti-Milan Del Piero replied: «We are anti-nobody. we must continue playing for ourselves and believing that we can achieve a lot by believing in ourselves».

Amauri- The Brazilian attacker is clearly satisfied with his performance: «I am very happy. We played a perfect match. The team gave a great performance bin a direct encounter. I wanted to score a double and of all days I managed to do so today. I must once again thank De Ceglie for the perfect pass. He is a youngster with great guarantees for the future».

Ranieri- «I don’t know if it was the best match played by Juve this season as many people are saying but I’m very happy because to beat Milan we needed to play very well let alone beating them in such a way. We knew we would have to run a lot. With players like they have it is never easy».

Words of praise and rightly so for the young players De Ceglie and Marchisio: «Claudio and Paolo played really well as did Amauri. It might be difficult to believe but at the end of the match when we were leading 3-2 and 4-2 I was angry because we didn’t vary our play to make them run but its easy to speak and much more difficult when you’re on the field.»

Asked whether Juventus are the anti-Inter, Ranieri answered: «Tonight we are but as from tomorrow we must start thinking of the match against Atalanta which won’t be easy. One thing is certain: Inter is trying to run away but we together with other teams like Milan and Napoli must prevent them from doing so».

Unreal game today, and to think my computer internet was down since yesterday and (in Canada) the t.v. satellite broadcast was experiencing technical difficulties at the start. But boy was it worth the trouble.

    JJJJJJJJJJJJJUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE

Just had to get that one over with. Alessio or I will put up a review soon, just after the euphoria passes.

really incredible game, Milan were torn apart completely. makes it hard to see Milan winning anything this year and much easier to see Juve making it difficult for Inter, who are really poor without Ibra.

    Man.
What an intense match. I could only catch the first half, which was already pretty damn exciting, so I taped the second half and just finished watching it.
That was a seriously entertaining game to watch and i’m pretty sure it’s not just i’ve been drinking.

marchisio is your best centrocampista and de ceglie is your best wing back but i know that when zanetti or poulsen are fit he will get benched. if thats the case then that would prove ranieri isnt up to it. marchisio is going to be the most important player in the centro for juve for years to come and should be playing every game same as de ceglie

    Hahaha Matthew…

I don’t think he’ll be benched for Poulsen or Zanetti. Zanetti’s got a long ways back to get to his 07-08 form, he’s been out for 4 months with a pretty awful thigh injury. Poulsen was signed up as backup to Sissoko and he hasn’t lit the world on fire in the time he’s been there. I think his time will decrease a bit, but so it goes. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Tiago, who was really thriving in Marchisio’s absence by Sissoko’s side.

Ale, you ready to admit Sissoko was a beast last night?

i said last night he had a good game but then last week he had a horrific game. like i say all along hes good but hes not juve standard. there is no place in modern calcio for a one dimensional centrocampista. i dont think he would have done as well if gattuso was playing and milan havent been playing well at all. but marchisio literally has it all like i say hes the de rossi of torino and he was one of the best players on the pitch as was my man amauri. and of course chiellini is the best defender in the world now hes incredible

whats the fuss, i’d rather be spoilt with choices than none at all, these players are professionals, even marchisio said so he wants to make it difficult for ranieri to choose – they will all be fighting for a starting place, which is exactly what we need from our players. bravo ragazzi. brilliant display.

Amauri was the freakin purchase of the offseason.

    The better team won!!!

Back to the drawing board 4 Milan…hopefully a striker of the same cloth of Amauri will land in Milan sooner rather than later.

And a defender. I couldn’t believe signing Ronaldinho, sure, he could possibly be a bargain if he returns to from, but you already have two world-class players in his position!

Calisi, I think he might be left at home as a precaution. Ranieri gave the boys off of training yesterday, and everyone but him and Manninger were back to full training today. It’s not serious, there’s just pain in his left thigh, some inflammation and bruising in his femoral artery. They said he needs a few days of rest, not sure if he’ll make it to Bergamo but I’d rather rest him as a precaution and give De Ceglie another go at that left-mid position.

Manninger did light work today, apparently he sustained a minor injury during Milan’s second goal, not sure how, but Juventus.com says there’s no worry because tomorrow he’ll be back to full training.

The Ronaldinho signing was/will be great. (He’ll come good)

But to reap the fully benefits of his play a world class striker was necessary, as someone needs to slam home the chances R80 would be providing.

Up to now Boriello, Sheva not even Pato (whose quite young still) has really answered the call.

A defender was needed before Nesta went down to injury. So now we need at least two world class defenders as Nesta & Maldini need to be replaced. Janks on one side and Zambro on the other can work for another year or two.
