Juventus FC 1-0 Torino FC, A Derby Review via mCalcio

By: agiamba | October 26th, 2008

More chicken soup, it seems we’re finally getting back to our winning ways, but we’ve got a nasty schedule ahead of us. Midweek game at Bologna, then match against Roma on the weekend, then flying to Madrid to play in the Bernabeu. Yikes.

Some thoughts, then a review of the derby courtesy of our friend Marco at mCalcio, who I might add is back posting at the Del Piero Offside. Hop on over and take a look, and while you’re at it, check out Matthew’s Buffon Offside page.

#1- Roma is sucking a lot more than I ever expected, the least they could do is draw points from Inter and Milan. Somewhere in Florida, KJ is orgasming giornata after giornata.

#2- “The derby had its aftermath and Paolo De Ceglie, Zdenek Grygera and Hasan Salihamidzic shall not be part of the team to play against the emiliani. The fullback from Val d’Aosta suffered a distortion of the ankle, the Czech defender a contracture in the muscle of his left thigh and the Bosnian midfielder complained of an acute pain to the left Achilles tendon. GODDAMNIT.

#3- This weekend we won two Torino derbies, as the Primavera squad crushed the Toro 3-0. Getting on the scoreboard were Esposito, Immobile, and an own goal from a Torino defender. Making his seasonal debut was ex-Barca winger Yago. The team has started the season with 3 straight wins, scoring 8 and conceding none. What’s more impressive about this is that with the injury crisis in the first team, important youth players like Ariaudo, Castiglia, Rossi and Pasquato were called up to the senior team to sit in the stands.

#4- Ranieri:“It’s normal to suffer when there are so many great players missing. Today we did very well in attacking them, especially in the first half. After that, fatigue from Tuesday set in and we played a little less well in the second half. These two wins are the fruits of our labour, we worked hard in these few days we had to prepare and everyone must take credit: the team, the Club and the fans. We all stayed close, united together regardless of the situation and we came through it together. But we can’t stop now after these two wins.”

[From mCalcio...]Is it too early to say ” Juventus crisis, begone”? One thing is certain: in the lowest moment of their season so far, the Bianconeri have really stepped it up when it counted. Coming from five consecutive winless matches, there is nothing like beating Real Madrid and winning a derby that will recharge your batteries in a major way. Something which the newest Juve family member knows full well: after providing his team with the match-winning-goal against the Merengues, he obliged again on Saturday; what would the Old Lady do without Amauri?

As for Torino, there seems to be no light yet at the end of their tunnel. Saturday marked the Granata’s fourth consecutive loss, leaving them just one point of the relegation zone.

Tactics-wise, Saturday marked the return (yet again) of Nicola Legrottaglie for Juve, while the midfield underwent a little revolution: after his great performance vs. Real Madrid, Nedved was given full confidence in a central role, thereby favoring the inclusion of Marchionni and De Ceglie on the wings. Up front, scoring duties were left in the capable hands (feet) of Amauri and Alessandro Del Piero. On the other end, Gianni De Biasi made some important changes of his own, dropping his usual “Xmas tree” in favour of a 4-4-1-1 line-up. Paying the price of the more defensive set-up was Nicola Amoruso (famous Juve ex), thus leaving the lone Alessandro Rosina in support of Rolando Bianchi up front. And just to prove the injury gods are seriously pissed with Turin teams, Matteo Sereni picked up an knock mid-week and was replaced in net by Calderoni.

Torino started the game with greater confidence and pressure very high up the field, especially from Bianchi, who managed to addle the Bianconeri defenders as they tried to move the ball up. However, it only took Juventus a bit over five minutes to get the gist of Torino’s game plan and to start dictating the match on their own terms, particularly through the proactive long-range efforts of Momo Sissoko, getting three shots on goal in the first twelve minutes.

Torino thus became cautious: attacks along the wings became rare (and this despite the appetizing Abate-Diana partnership on the right side), while Rosina and Bianchi were finding themselves more and more isolated. On the other end however, the Bianconeri continued to push forward and almost collected dividends, when Del Piero broke through on the right and crossed the ball in the area for Marchionni. The Juve midfielder didn’t get one, but two shooting attemps on goal, both skillfully deflected by the Torino goalkeeper.

Like any good derby, the match started to become edgy. Diana was the first to leave the pitch on a stretcher, after being on the receiving end of an involuntary slap in the face from Del Piero. The Granata midfielder got some payback a few minutes later though, when an ill-directed tackle on Nedved forced the Czech player to four minutes of medical treatment on the sidelines. Ironically, the only yellow cards handed out by the referee were to Barone & Sissoko, those dishing out the most “punitive” treatment thus far. The half ended 0-0, the only notable Torino chance being a Bianchi attempted lob wide (trying to take advantage of a poor rush out of the box by Manninger).

In the second period, Juventus restarted the match with Mellberg in place of the injured Grygera (an injured Juve player? you don’t say!), but got some great news just three minutes later. Receiving a pass from Nedved, Amauri wrestled free of Di Loreto and raced toward goal. Resisting the return charge of the Torino defender, the Brazilian striker executed a powerful left-footed effort just inside the box, on which Calderoni made a bit of a mess and allowed the ball to pass under his arm. It was Amauri’s third goal in 8 days, and also 1-0 Juventus.

Conceding the goal meant it was time for Torino to wake up a little. De Biasi strengthened his attack by bringing on Abbruscato for Rubin (thus reverting to his usual 4-3-2-1 formation), and instructed his players to increase the wing traffic just a tiny bit. Diana promptly executed his manager’s wishes, causing high danger down the right wing and especially at the hour mark, when Legrottaglie was in the right place at the right time to anticipate a cross towards Bianchi.

At this point Ranieri decided to tinker too, only instead of bringing on a defensive sub (like he did against Napoli, and we all know how that went) he played the Giovinco card, a move widely appreciated by the entire Juventus crowd present at Stadio Olimpico. The Formica Atomica didn’t do much however, except for a very good Didier Deschamps impersonation (the master of “tactical fouls” at Juve back in the day) on Abate which earned him a spot in the referee’s book.

The last 10 minutes essentially belonged to Torino, the “visitors” desperately trying to obtain an equalizing goal. De Biasi sent in fresh troops up front (Amoruso & Ventola for Rosina & Bianchi) but with little effect, save for two narrowly-wide headers by Abbruscato and Amoruso. Clearly not enough for the night, as the ref called full-time and returned Juventus to victory.

No C. Zanetti, he stayed home as well. Which makes me wonder who plays CM with Sissoko...Nedved might go left-wing since De Ceglie is injured, Giovinco might be playing up top. Maybe we'll spot Tiago on the field, if Ranieri is that desperate.

    Manninger
    Mellberg Knezevic (fuck) Chiellini Molinaro
    Marchionni Sissoko Nedved Giovinco

ADP will get that rest (cf alessio's comment). As far as Zanetti and Camo are concerned, Ranieri already stated they wouldn't be starting Wednesday. Hopefully they'll see some match time late in the game though, preferably with Juve 2-0 or 3-0 up.

I think Roberto's gonna do a preview of the game, which is good cause I have no time to do a real one, not sure if I'll be able to watch the game, I'm at work for 8 hours tomorrow. We're missing some key members but this is a match we really need to pick up 3 at. Bologna has been leaking goals like crazy and are in relatively dismal form. They did crush Lazio and beat Milan in the San Siro though, so it's a tricky game. FORZA JUVE!

Zanetti, ADP, De Ceglie, and Legro didn't even make the trip. Camoranesi won't be fit for a full 90 also.

IMO whether or not our football is pretty is beside the point. What we haven't been playing consistently is effective football. Whether we achieve this by lots of defence and grinding out wins or letting our flair players shine, both can work. Personally, I'd like to see a better mixture of both as I think our balance is off right now and we have yet to build our depth back up after calciopoli. Clearly we're not as strong defensively as we were during the Capello years, while relying primarily on a single injury prone RW for our creative spark is simply not cutting it.

Good on the shareholders. It’s about time they created a mutiny. Now if they can just get certain management yahoos sacked…

Alessio, you have a point. Ranieri hasn't totally been using Capello's playbook of parking a tank in front of the back four. ;)

Adam, I agree with you about Camo. Without greater depth and creativity on our wings, Ranieri's system tends to fall apart. I'd also add that the past month or so has shown how much we need Zanetti back as well. If we're not going to use the center of the pitch for outright creativity, then it sure as hell needs to be shored up with the workhorse-type stability that Zanetti brings to the team.

I'd like to see Camo-Sissoko-Zanetti-Giovinco in action.

Appearantly our shareholders got pissed at a meeting with our board. Saying that over 120 million euros were spent in two years and they couldn't build a team better than Cappello who had a fraction of that. It's good to know that the people supplying our club with money don't fall for the tricks and lies made by our clowns in suits. Something needs to be done the people running our club are an embarrassment.
  • adam
Alessio, I said during preseason that Camoranesi is our most important player and without him we have very little to offer. He is our only creative midfielder and he does get injured often. Last year we played very boring football when he was out and this year we are doing the same. Ranieri got his wish of 2 CM's that can defend and his plan has failed miserably. The whole excuse of Xabi Alonso being too slow is a very retarded explanation to try to make everyone feel better. We have Sissoko who is incredible at getting the ball back to us but he doesn't have many options other than Del Piero and Camoranesi when fit. I really have no clue as to what future Ranieri sees in his plan, to me it looks very dark.
  • agiamba
I think you're overstating Ranieri's love for DMs, as most do Deb. While he certainly would never play without one, I don't think he wants two as much as he wants a second midfielder who can defend. His complaint about Alonso was that he was too slow, anotherwords, he couldn't stop the counters. Zanetti and Marchisio are not pure DMs as much as CMs who track back and fight hard. When Tiago was in the middle he made some good passes but on defense he might have well not been there.

I agree Giovinco will probably not see much time as trequartista, but that's ok. I think he can play LW or seconda punta.
  • Deb
Sally, yeah, I was wondering about Tiago too, but since he never plays anyway, his injury doesn't really matter in the larger scheme of things, does it? :P Besides, if Gio can't make it onto the damn pitch even with all these injuries, then Tiago doesn't stand a hope in hell unless everyone else is well... dead. And even then Ranieri might just opt to prop up a few cardboard cutouts and hope for the best. Heh. :D

I still haven't quite decided if Tiago just sucks in general or if it's Ranieri's system that he just doesn't do well in. And his whole I-will-not-leave-you-can-not-force-me-out schtik is based on the hope that if he somehow manages to outwait Ranieri's tenure, he'd do much better at Juve (assuming they get a replacement coach that actually knows how to effectively utilize a creative center mid).

Competition for first team football is certainly high, but drawing on this idea, what if Gio might not be playing very much these days (and could eventually be labelled a flop just like Tiago) simply because Ranieri doesn't play a system that he can truly flourish in? We don't play with a trequartista any longer like in the grand days of Baggio - probably Gio's most natural position. And I can't seem to shake the thought that even if we'd managed to snag Alonso or Van der Vaart in the last mercato, they'd be wasting away on our bench right now with Tiago because none of them are DM's or wingers - Ranieri's midfield of choice.

Altre due assenze per la Juve in vista della trasferta di domani a Bologna. Ranieri non ha convocato Del Piero e Legrottaglie, alle prese entrambi con problemi fisici.

  • How the hell did TIAGO get injured :o

Probably locked himself up in the bathroom, tried to break the door open with his shoulder.
  • Deb, you think Brazzo was bad? How the hell did TIAGO get injured :o
  • And that was directed to Steven - I think I just have Kevin on the brain - something about having a "v" in your name, I think. Sorry.
  • Jeez Kevin, I know you all hate Inter, but c'mon, that's just mean. Dont send them our way. Crazy egg-thowing stabbers - no thank you.
  • adam
Samson it wouldn't really matter to you if Roma got relegated, you do support alot of teams. 985,768,947,632 teams to be exact.
  • "I wonder how many Romanisti are gonna convert to Milanisti or Interisti once the CL is out of reach."

Steve- You can count me out on that one. Im proud to say that even if Roma get relegated (keep dreaming)I would still be a loyal supporter.

Of course, a tifosi like you can relate, no? Palermo hasnt realy umm... how do you say? been good to you.
  • agiamba
Congrats to Chiellini on 100 appearances with Juve, had no idea he was already that high. Future captain of Italy and Juve for sure, he'll probably succeed Buffon in both roles.

Injury update: Grygera, Salihamidzic and De Ceglie, underwent physiotherapy this morning. The Val d'Aosta-native will take a little longer to recover (15 days), whereas the Czech defender and the Bosnian midfielder could already be available again in time for next Saturday's match against Roma, as could Poulsen and Tiago. There's also good news regarding Camoranesi and Zanetti, who worked the full session today, including the training match against the Youth Team. Ranieri will decide tomorrow whether to add Camoranesi to the squad already for the Bologna game, while Zanetti has a chance to be back in time for the away game against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
  • KJ
sofia when will you admit Amauri is the man?
  • Sofia
i really hope that ranieri will try to start giovinco now with all these injuries - i mean seriously, he starts molinaro every damn game but giovinco only deserves half an hour? that is bullshit ( yes im quite aware they play two different positions i was just using molinaro's uselessness as an example)
  • Deb
Oh thank god we won. Finally. I still don't expect Ranieri to be able to deliver consistent wins over the long term, but 3 points is a much needed 3 points.

Amauri is indeed proving to be worth his paycheck. But how the hell did Salihams get hurt without even making it onto the pitch??! Geez, we really have managed to piss off the injury gods...
  • Pablo
We are winning again and I'm getting lots of points in the Serie A Fantasy game... Who else (here) is playing that game? How are juve supporters ranked?
  • That KJ-comment is fantastic. I wonder how many Romanisti will convert to Milanisti or Interisti once the CL is out of reach.

I can't actually bring myself to do it though, because Juve is my 2nd favorite team and I love Del P like a father.

By the way, if anyone else but Pavel Nedved had been hit like that yesterday, they would have subbed off injured. The guy is a tank.
