Juventus 0-3 Milan; It’s All Over

By: agiamba | January 11th, 2010

Some have said this is one of our worst games in recent memory, getting hammered by archrivals Milan in our own backyard, our first home loss to the Rossoneri since 03-04. I disagree, while we were utter garbage, the scoreline flatters Milan who were not terribly impressive either. The worst game in recent memory, for me, no doubt was the Bayern debacle where we easily could have lost 7-1, or maybe even worse. That said, it doesn’t really diminish the pain of losing to Dinho and co that badly at the Stadio Olimpico. Ratings and commentary after the jump.

ITALY SOCCER SERIE A

Manninger: 6- Had little to do all game other than pick the ball out of the net. Can’t really do anything about the goals.

Grygera: 5.5- His job was to nullify Ronaldinho on the right-flank. Dinho didn’t exactly have free movement, but Grygera didn’t really close him down either.
Cannavaro: 5.5- Doesn’t fill the backline with confidence at all. Should have been marking Dinho for the 3rd goal, but completely lost him.
Chiellini: 7- The only player that can really keep his head high after the game. Defensively, rock solid and on numerous occasions covered Grosso and Cannavaro’s ass in what is going to be a very short (or very long, depending how you look at it) World Cup run given the duo’s form. Also was one of the few players to look dangerous up top.
Grosso: 5- Leaves massive gaps at the back, which is awful but sometimes acceptable if he’s doing something up front. Against Milan he did nothing offensively, and thus only conceded space to Beckham and Co. Grygera and Grosso should have attacked the flanks more, given that Antonini and Abate are still very green, but failed to do so.

This picture couldn’t be more perfect: As Cannamerda and Amauri are fraternizing with their friends (aka, the enemies that just stomped us) Chiellini stands in the back ground, pissed off, with the captain’s armband. The only bright spot on our team.

Salihamidzic: 6.5- Another good game from Brazzo. Though he faded in the 2nd half, in the first he was one of the few effective midfielders, playing simple passes and some nice one-twos and doing well to constrain Ronaldinho. Was one of the few to actually build something offensively.
Felipe Melo: 4.5- Yet another garbage game from this year’s bidone d’oro. Should have cleared the ball that led to Nesta’s first goal, instead, his shittiness left Manninger completely screwed. One has to wonder how poorly he has to play for Ferrara to bench him in favor of Marrone, or hell, Chimenti.
Poulsen: 5- Not as culpable as Melo for the first goal, but could have cleared it too. He fought hard, but with Felipe Melo playing awful, he was alone against a dominant Milan midfield and thus couldn’t do much.
Marchisio: 5.5- It is quite apparent that his effectiveness is massively limited playing as a left-midfielder, Genoa game be damned. He did put some decent plays on the wing together, due to the black hole in central midfield, play had to go through the wings. Should have been able to clear the 3rd goal, perhaps the fog from the goddamn stadium burning down obscured the ball.

GET OUT ALREADY!

Diego: 6- The lone real outlet for any attacking play, Diego was marked heavily and had no one to pass to. Had a good curling effort on goal.
Amauri: 5- To be fair, he really didn’t get any service. I say two things about that: First, when he did get service, he lost possession. Second, he didn’t get service because as Diego was dribbling down the field, he was just standing in front of Nesta or Thiago Silva waiting for the ball to be played on him. He needs to make some fucking runs for Diego to pass to.

Del Piero: 5- Another blah performance from il Capitano, though he took a nice free kick late. He’s not quite fit, but he needs to play instead of Amauri. Hell, Immobile needs to play instead of Amauri.
De Ceglie: 5- Should have started on the left-wing, and when he came on, Juve had already given up.
Ferrara: 4.5- The game started out pretty well, but the first goal took the wind out of our sails. Two things I blame Ferrara for on this game: First, poor player selection. Marchisio should have started in center midfield over Felipe Melo, De Ceglie should have started at left-mid, and anyone up top except Amauri. Maybe Legrottaglie over Cannavaro, too. Secondly- I don’t blame him for Felipe Melo and Cannavaro forgetting how to play within the box, but set piece defending is largely his fault, and it has been non-existent this season.

SOCCER-ITALY/
Our only hope…save us BOBBYGOL

Other Thoughts:
—–So where does this leave us? Do we sack Ferrara, and go for the Guus? I don’t think most new coaches will make a big difference, as I said during the game, you can polish a turd all you like, at the end, it’s still a pile of crap, and that’s how I feel about some of our players right now. It’s easier to change coaches than players, but sacking him would just feel like being an Interista. If Gigi Maifredi could coach this team to 7th, why not Ciro? Frankly, if we don’t get in the Champion’s League, Europa League qualification is pointless, so outside of 4th place, I don’t care if we finish 5th or 15th. As I said a few weeks ago, as long as we are top of the table, I’m with Ciro until the summer.
—–Ferrara’s shouldered most of the blame over the last month, but even Ferrara’s biggest critics seem to be coming around to the idea that the management is very culpable as well. Alessio Secco seemed to have done good work this summer, but it has gone very poorly. Bettega is a step to a competent management that can support our coach, but it will take a while longer.
—–Speaking of transfers, we need to focus less on expensive foreigners, and more on young Serie A talent. Gaetano D’Agostino would have fought for the Juventus shirt, not stood around looking like a dumbass like Felipe Melo does. If we get players that have grown up in Italy, they will know what the Juventus shirt means. Plus, unlike Brazilians or other foreigners, once they are at Juve they are at the top. If Diego became really successful, Real Madrid might swoop for him. Chiellini is unlikely to go abroad no matter who comes calling. Mercato priorities should be some of the following- Criscito, Ranocchia, Bonucci, Cigarini, D’Agostino, and Pazzini. Several of these players are avowed Juventini, for God’s sakes.
—–Speaking of Pazzini, we need to go all out for him. Defense should be the priority for this summer’s mercato, followed by a good midfielder, but if we have any cash left we need to sign him. He’s a Juventino, he’s young, and he’s a great striker. Iaquinta, for all his hard work, is not a born killer. Trez is, but he’s aging. Pazzini is like Inzaghi’s predatory nature combined with Crespo’s physical stature. (-10 years for both of them, of course)
—–Milan for the Scudetto? I’m certainly pulling for them.

For the masochists out there.

Antonio Paolino’s expressions (Juventino on the right) sum it up well. At least I didn’t have a screaming Milanista next to me for the match.

That is all. There’s a Coppa game against Napoli tomorrow, and I will cry if Felipe Melo AND Amauri set foot on the pitch. We should be throwing youngsters into Serie A matches as long as they keep sucking to say the least..Coppa matches they should be automatically benched for some young talent.

no prob Jorid....let's get this today!!...

    thanks alessio!
  • Highlights and ratings up in a new post. :)
  • @ Jorid,
Legro also has god on his side, and we certainly need some divine intervention right now ;)
  • Wow, Nice to be winning once more :)
Unfortunately I missed the game :( So will need to catch up on the highlights. Lets hope it turns things around for us and not just a flash in the pan.
  • Jorid
I agree about Legro, Jose. I'm not Legro's biggest fan(as Alessio probably knows by now lol), but now that Ariaudo is gone, and that Canna has showed the player he really is, I'm all for Lefrattaglie starting over him. He's more lucid, a tad bit faster, has more in the tank than Caccavaro and at least he looks as if he tries on the field. Not only does Canna look old and lost, he also seems as if he doesn't give a fuck half of the time.
  • Jose
JCB aside. If Juve bring back Lanzaframe where would he play??. I am so confused as to what our plan is for the future. are we going to be playing 4-4-2 and make Diego play as a striker?. Are we playing 4-3-1-2 with De Ceglie and Lanzaframe on the wings?. Anyway, many possibilities but I don't understand where would Lanzaframe fit maybe someone can clarify this. Regardless, bringing another midfielder/attacker seems to be a message for Giovinco saying we don't want/need you. If that is the case, then sell the kid, I just hope he doesn't score too many goals against us.

Last thing, I have to admit that I thought Cannavaro should start over Legrotaglie when the season started. As things stand now, I am glad to see Legro and Chiellini walk away with a clean sheet. Way to go Legro, maybe today's performace will please Ferrara.
  • Jorid
Yes Alessio. I am fine with JCB and want him to continue to keep his role at the club as long as he keeps a position related almost exclusively to finances. His work in that department has been good and I don't think any Juventini have any complaints about that. Secco on the other hand is fucking useless, incompetent and should have no part in a club like Juve. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Bettega's return to the club has been so far the best moment of this season for Juve.
  • Good articles, Jorid. I am relatively satisfied with JCB, but I agree that the role of President shouldn't be for the financial guy. He's done great work with the stadium and our finances, and we should keep him on. But not the guy who makes decisions about Secco, transfers, and the coach. Hopefully Bettega is going to take most of that responsibility from him, and be President everyway except in name.
  • Jorid
Agreed Jose. As a die hard Juventus fan, I would like to see someone who just loves Juventus/has made history with Juventus (Gianni Agnelli and Roberto Bettega were/are great examples of this) at the head of the club. I don't want some random guy who just happens to like the team and just happens to be filling a position like JCB. Also, I would like someone assertive and with class(again, Gianni Agnelli was a great example of this), and not some douche who goes out and talks about "If we win the Scudetto this year we are putting a third star on our shirts!" That just screams irresponsible and premature. It's the beginning of the season for fuck's sake, STFU and wait till you actually finally help this team win something, because so far, you might have done well with the finances, but the team is light years behind what it used to be.
  • Jose
Thanks for the links Jorid. Blanc needs to start acting like a president, enough talking about 3 stars on the jersey. Juve got the other 2 stars with humility and hard work. If he can't guide Juve, maybe he should go back to finances and Elkann should appoint someone that can stir us in the right direction.
  • Jorid
For those who are not very good with the Italian language, this article by Carlo Garganese, pretty much sums up what Ziliani said:

Going back to the discussion about why some of us here really hate Secco and are not too fond of JCB. As discussed before, Secco is an idiot who should not be where he's at, Ciro is inexperienced and has made his errors throughout the season and JCB is just way to indifferent and not assertive at all. I found this article as perfectly correct about Blanc(Granted that I still hate Secco a LOT more than him):

  • Sofia
WOW! so I would be in class during our best game ever! I could've watched it had my computer not died. well i will watch the highlights!
  • tyo
awesome, de caglie is best, we must play him every match.. learn ciro, learn that!!!
  • It's Immobile time, bitches. He needs a chance to play.
  • Sam.
Are we actually trying to get Lanzafame back? He's a great player but i highly doubt he will be getting any game time he probably sit and rot on the bench like the rest of our player. I would rather him being at Parma and getting some good game time.
  • DJP
    That would be Immobile.
  • bianconeri
So with Amauri suspeneded next game, who do we have as a striker?

Iaquinta and Trez are both injured.
  • Formations are pretty subjective, but I'd say we played a 4-3-1-2 with De Ceglie and Brazzo playing as hybrid CMs/wingers.

Two things I think I was right about
-Legro > Cannavaro, as I said before the match. Even Legro's haters, like Sam, are starting to come around. :)
-The 4-3-1-2 can work, if we don't need a regista, we need a seconda punta. Diego can't do it all himself, but tonight he had some good interchanges with other forwards and it freed him up.
    Two other thoughts from tonight:
-Amauri is worthless. Thank God he's suspended for Sunday
-Sure, Napoli didn't have some of their starters but their team, as someone said, is still better than Catania. I'll take the win, either way.

Lastly, Ferrara said he has funds available to go into the market. I don't know if we'll be cannabalizing summer's funds, or if it's money we have. He said he's looking at a CM and possibly a winger/striker. The latter will likely be Lanzafame...the first, who knows.

congrats everyone. i didn't have a chance to watch the game unfortunately. but from what i read here we played pretty good futbol, makes me really happy.

    highlights anyone?

    again, congratulations all.
  • Mo
    We didn't play with a 4-4-2 formation it was a more of a 4-1-3-2
  • Jose
Ferrara was confirmed as coach and we are apparently going to buy someone this winter. I think confirming Ferrara really helped the team's confidence
  • bianconeri
Anyone know what happened at today's board meeting?
  • Zafar
Wheeew! I felt like we won the scudetto! Very happy with the score. We needed this sooo bad. I agree with all of you about Melo, it was kinda strange seeing him play good. I'm used to seeing some shitty pass whenever he touches the ball, but today was different. Happy for il capitano, he capitalized on his chances. Overall good performance.
  • Ching
Good to see you guys getting excited with a coppa victory against the Napoli b's. Looking forward to seeing you at the San Siro...
  • Sam.
Ohh yes, and Leggro he should start ahead of Cannavaro, i don't really like Leggro, but he is better than Cannavaro, he had a good performance tonight.
  • Sam.
For the first time actually played some decent football, it has been a while. We created opportunities from free play and that was what lacking.

If we do play a 4-4-2 we have to play De Ceglie at left wing. He has talent a a lot of it. We was very impressive today and that through ball. I never understood why he didn't start at left wing, instead a makeshift Marchisio playing there. He will come back and help and knows how to defend. And now thanks to Poulsen's injury he should be getting some time.

Melo is a great player, give him time as well he we slowly but surely start playing well. You cant just start every single match for Brazil, despite your lack of form for your club, he is still a very talented player.

Del Piero still looked a little rusty but it's time to start him. We have to, we really lack some creativity up front. Once Diego gets the ball he dosent have anyone to pass to next, CAUSE THE STATIC AMAURI is just standing there, del piero is needed.
  • Gaetano
    finalmente!
wow i missed it. Will def check the hlites tonight. We should play this way sunday.
What do you guys think about the formatiom used?
  • Sam
Yeah it's time Del piero is our one and only savior. It's time he starts
  • tyo
ale, roberto, very glad to hear that. Optimism boost before Chievo game, especially if Gigi the God will play.
    Forza Juve
  • @Sofia: By far one of the best games in the last couple of months. Players like ADP,PDC,Legrottaglie, and dare I say Melo, came out of their shells tonight. Well deserved victory. Really though, could it have been any worse up until this point?
  • Caceres also played very well.
  • One of the best performers today- Paolo De Ceglie. Give the kid some more playing time!
  • Michelangelo
our only flaw today was AMAURI
  • Sofia
    ALE ALE ALE ALE ALE!!!!!!!
how did we play?! i'm in class so i couldn't watch the match
  • Jose
    Well said alessio
  • BENTORNATO IL CAPITANOOOOOOOOOO
