Juve-Napoli; il Nord v. il Mezzogiorno
By: alessio | February 28th, 2009Juventus-Napoli has always been a special fixture, whether in Serie A or Serie B. In a country as divided geographically as Italy, it is a battle of the most successful northern side against the most successful team from Il Mezzogiorno. The fact that Juventus has as many (if not more) tifosi in the South as Napoli only makes the rivalry better. This has always been a fierce game; last season, after a 80minute siege of the Napolitano goal, the Calabrian Cannon himself, Vincenzo Iaquinta, brought the Azzurri down 1-0.
Being Pugliese, of course I cannot stand the Napolitani. It’s complex, but the only team mio nonno dislikes more (aside from Lecce) is probably any team from Sicily. But Sicilians don’t bother me much. Ahhh, the regionalism. 130 years of unification hasn’t changed too much.
I hope every Bianconero has checked Juve’s website, particularly if they don’t speak Italian. The English section is absolutely fantastic, I think the best of any Serie A club. Grammar isn’t always perfect, but who really gives a damn. Here is their post about the game:
All about Juventus-Napoli
Juventus-Napoli: Act 3. After the match in the first round of the Serie A and that in the Coppa Italia, the bianconeri and the partenopei will meet once again on Saturday at the Olimpico. Once again the match will be in the evening just like in the two previous cases. The match is valid for the 7th match day of the second round.Juventus.com is bringing you some interesting information to follow the match better.
NAPOLI AWAY
Napoli only managed to win 8 points away from home when compared to the 27 won in their stadium. A rather surprising outcome when one considers that in the first 5 matches away from the San Paolo the partenopei had obtained 2 victories (against Bologna and Lazio), two draws (against Roma and Udinese) and only one defeat with an end result of 3-2 against Genoa. The negative series is 7 matches long in which Lavezzi and friends did not manage to obtain a single point. In six of the matches the dfeat was minimal with the goal difference only being bigger in the match against Atalanta (3-1 in favour of the nerazzurri).
HOW THEY’VE BEEN DOING
In the ninth match day of the championship Napoli was leading the table together with Udiense. The leap to the top had been possible thanks to 3 consecutive wins with the first being against Juventus. The defeat against Milan at the San Siro at the very end of the match was the start to a see-saw period with the azzurri still managing to end 2008 in fifth position, only two points away from the position valid for access to the Champions League preliminaries. With the beginning of the new year there came also the beginning of a negative period, with exception of the 3 points obtained against Catania. Reja’s team did not manage to win again in the following matches registering 2 draws and 5 defeats which see them 8 points away from the UEFA zone.
JUVENTUS-NAPOLI IN FEBRUARY
Statistics with regards to matches played between the two teams in Turin during the month of February are in favour of the bianconeri, this with the exception of the first encounter back in 1941 when Juventus and Napoli shared the spoils in 0-0 draw. The following occasions saw the home team have the better. The largest score was registered in 1974 when Juventus won 4-1 thanks two goals each by Fabio Capello and Pietro Anastasi. There are then to 1-0 victories in two seasons during which Juventus won the championship: the first thanks to a goal scored by Roberto Boninsegna three minutes after kick-off in 1978 and the second had Fabrizio Ravanelli as protagonist in 1995 complete with the masked man celebration. Finally there is the 3-0 victory on the 11th of February 2001 with Napoli already resigned to relegation. The scorers that day were Darko Kovacevic, Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero who scored an easy goal after goalkeeper Fontana dropped the ball in what was a bad mistake.UNGRATEFUL HEART
1974-75: Juventus-Napoli is played 6 days from the end of the championship with the bianconeri at the top of the table and the campani two points behind. The match is decisive for the final victory of the championship. After the goals by Causio and Juliano, a former Napoli forward, the Brazilian José Altafini is the man to score in the final 2 minutes of the match. The Napoli supporters nick-named their former idol “core n’grato” (ungrateful heart) not able to forgive him such an important exploit. Curiosuly enough, in the following championship, it is once a former Napoli player – and who will return to Napoli later on – to equalise after the advantage score by Savoldi: the goal by Oscar Damiani paved the road to success for Juventus and again it was scored during injury time thanks to Sergio Gori.
Form:
Juventus- Mixed. We’ve been on an inconsistent Russian Mountain (ha) in Serie A. We beat Palermo last week in a game that flattered us, certainly. Followed by a draw, a another scrappy win, the loss to Cagliari and Udinese, and then our lucky win over Fiorentina. It’s been odd. Some of the games we’ve won (Catania) we haven’t particularly deserved, then again against Sampdoria we certainly deserved the 3 points, striking the crossbar and post an ungodly amount. Then, of course, there was that little game this week we unluckily lost 1-0….
Napoli- Disastrous. Frankly, it’s shocking. Earlier in the season, Udinese and Napoli were at the top of the table. The other Bianconeri had a serious slide, but have gotten out of it. The Azzurri have not. They have lost to Genoa, Palermo, Fiorentina, and Roma recently and have not won in ages, it seems. They have been in a free fall down the table, currently in 10th. I have no idea what or who is responsible for Napoli’s implosion, they faded a bit last season but finished in a good position. This season they were talking Champion’s League football, but they are going to have to battle to get into the Uefa Cup Europa League. (is it just me or is the name corny?) The Offside’s Napoli blogger Neil (a good guy, despite being a Napoli fan) blames Reja. No doubt he deserves a large chunk of the blame, but I think he’s a capable coach and like Delio Rossi last year, it’s a combination of coaching errors but something else. I don’t know what, to be honest.
Formations and lineups:
Juventus- 4-4-2, of course. It’ll be interesting to see who/if Ranieri decides to rest. I’m personally hoping for this-
Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni, Tiago, Marchisio, Giovinco; Iaquinta, Trezeguet
Ranieri may decide to play Amauri and/or ADP up front instead. Claudio is a big fan of Sissoko, so he will likely take either Tiago or Marchisio’s spot in center mid. I hope to God after Nedved’s cry for help that Ranieri decides to start Giovinco at left-wing. I think De Ceglie is more apt to the position, but obviously he’s injured and Giovinco is certainly capable of manning the wing. Mellberg may get the nod in defense to rotate/replace Grygera or maybe in the center alongside Chiellini.
Injured- Andrade, Zebina(?), Camoranesi, De Ceglie, C. Zanetti
Napoli- Reja loves the 3-5-2 like Ranieri loves 4-4-2. (the formation, not the magazine) Your best bet, of course, is to visit the Napoli Offside. Here is Channel4’s prediction.
Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini; Maggio, Blasi, Gargano, Hamsik, Datolo; Denis, Lavezzi
I’ll be honest and say I have no idea who Datolo is. Other websites suggest Vitale will take that spot. Your idea is as good as mine.
Things/People to Watch:
Juventus Ranieri v. Chelsea Ranieri- Nothing to do with the midweek game. Can you please start tinkering/rotating?!
Maradona’s heir #25 v. Juve’s defense- I would assume Legro would mark Denis and Chiellini, Lavezzi. But everyone’s responsible back there. Our defense has looked mediocre recently. So has Lavezzi. Bet on Keyser Giorgio to have a solid game after an indifferent midweek spell.
Nedved’s heir #25- He isn’t ceco, but who wouldn’t want Hamsik on their taem?
Marchionni as Camo’s heir?- Marco’s been uninjured and has had some good games this season. He has also had some terrible ones. As I said int he last post, injuries and age may be catching up to Camo. If Marchionni wants a starting shirt, it’s time for him to stake his clame.
David Trezeguet- Quando gioca, sempre segna Trezegol.
Juventus Primavera- There will be a nice celebration for the lads for winning the Viareggio Cup. Cobolli will give the trophy to Castiglia (the captain) and the award for Capocannoniere to Daud. Highlights of the tourney will be played for the crowd. Good stuff. Monday, the piccoli gobbi will play against Sampdoria again, in a battle of the top of the table.
Zebina’s return- Because he’s playing with the Primavera on Monday. Where, aside from his receding hairline, he belongs. Even better stu stuff.
Prediction:
With Rioma hopefully helping us out a bit (we did for you last year, jackasses) this weekend, this is a must win. Napoli will be fired up to play Juve, but their recent form is absolutely dreadful and anything less than the full 3 points would be an utter disapppointment. I frankly couldn’t care about the performance right now. Just win. A couple of goals would be nice.
As always….forza Juve!!

mmm I thought you were a Palermo fan that had a soft spot for Napoli.
It woulda been amazing if only Rioma had won…but I’ll take the 2 points. The league ain’t over till it’s over.

if they get beaten by man utd then i reckon they could have a meltdown like last year and then you really have to step up and win every game. plus you play them at home soon i would love to be at that game. its going to be an exciting finish to the season as long as boro arent relegated of course

We need to buy Christian Maggio, and a left midfielder. If Diego cant fill that position, then we either need someone that can, such as Schweinsteiger who i’m pretty sure could, or stick with Giovinco whose actually been doing very well in that position. So this is how we should play next year:
(4-3-1-2)
Buffon
Grygera/Maggio Legrottaglie Chiellini De Ceglie
Camoranesi Marchisio Giovinco/Schweinsteiger/Diego
Del Piero
Trezeguet AmauriOr we could put use Giovinco as the sub for Del Piero instead of the left midfielder, and possibly use Tiago as the sub for the summer signing.

Overall, the entire Juventus lineups should look like this:
Keepers: Buffon, Manninger, and AMELIA.
Right backs: Grygera, Zebina, and MAGGIO.
Center backs: Chiellini, Legrottaglie, Ariaudo, Knezevic, and Mellberg(right back also). Possibly Andrade.
Left backs: Molinaro and De Ceglie(left midfielder also).Right midfielders: Camoranesi, Marchionni, and Salihamidzic.
Central midfielders: Marchisio, Sissoko, Poulsen, C. Zanetti, and Tiago(left midfielder also).
Left midfielders: SCHWEINSTEIGER/DIEGO and Giovinco(second striker also). Possibly Nedved.Second Strikers: Del Piero.
Strikers: Trezeguet, Amauri, and Iaquinta.Posted from

I´ve seen this before, and Del Piero cannot play at his best behind the strikers.
There´s also no chance of Amelia coming to be a 3rd-place keeper.
I don´t particularly fancy Maggio..but he´d do. I´d like a left-back, a center-back, and a left-winger.

if you get diego or silva i think you can win something next season. and i definitely think you should give de ceglie another go at left back lets be honest he hasnt had a long enough run out to prove his worth and when he did play there he was better than molinaro and hes had more chances than anyone. and a cheap option would be buying that belusci from ascoli, hes young and supposed to be quality (let him learn from giorgio and legro). and finally cigarini for the midfield. so you end up spending:
25-30 for silva or diego (worth every penny)
8 for cigarini
5 for belusci
obviously you will have to sell players in the summer i can safely say if you brought in quality players tiago, almiron and even iaquinta wont be missed (hes to good to sit on the bench it pisses me off as hes one of my favourite strikers)Posted from

and my god get prandelli in as manager he really doesnt want to be in florence anymore and imagine what he could do with this team and the right players?!

I think he still wants to be the Viola´s manager, he´s just frustrated (rightly so) that people are criticizing him. Kinda like Ranieri/Juve, think where they were 3 years ago.

juve is a completely different club to fiorentina though. juve are world famous for having a winning mentality that only really real madrid or man utd can boast but you have ranieri who hasnt won anything. whatever you think about him alessio, juve wont win a scudetto or champions league with him in charge. you need a new manager next season. conte should be brought in he hasnt won anything but as a player hes won it all and thats alot more than ranieri has ever done he just doesnt have the juve spirit. and hes not versatile enough with his formations. but then again i hope you go far in the champions league and if you win it i would take everything ive ever said about ranieri back

Agreed, Ranieri is not the right man for the job

I still think it should be Gasperini from Genoa, he was made for our team.

I think he’s a good man for the transition.
I think Gasperini would be great, but I’m not sure if he’d jump ship. Plus, we might lose Juventus#2, which I like watching. Prandelli is a great manager no doubt, but I’m not sure if he’d be a great manager at Juventus. And Conte, still too early. He’s doing great work with Bari, a year and a month ago the team was hovering near relegation thanks to Giuseppe Materazzi, and now they are in first. But there’s been a lot of Serie B coaches that have done well but couldn’t cut it in Serie A, much less Juve.

To Alessio –
Why cant Del Piero play in a trequartista position? I thought that was his natural position. Not really the same thing as an attacking midfielder, more like a deeper-lying striker behind the one or two strikers up front. Basically the same way as Roberto Baggio, who Del Piero is very similar to.
And yes i know Amelia would not like to be a 3rd choice keeper, but it would still be great to get him, and he might get the nod over Manninger at least (even though Manninger has been incredible this season). He’s Gigi’s future replacement in the Azzurri, and one of the best keepers in Serie A along with Buffon, Cesar, etc.
Have you ever watched Christian Maggio? In my opinion, he’s the second best right back in Serie A right now, only behind Maicon. Maggio is very similar to Zambro back in the day, very impressive. It’s a real shame that he hasnt been called up for the Azzurri lately, Zambro is great, but wasnt what he once was, and Maggio is incredible.
Also, i disagree with 2 of the positions you think we need.
A Left back? Once De Ceglie gets back, he’s a great left back, and Molinaro would be a decent reserve. Though maybe we could use a third just in case, i dont think we need it.
A Center back? Chiellini is world class and one of the best defenders in the world already at a very young age. Legro has also been very good this season and i think he has a few more years left in him as a starter. Plus there’s Mellberg who has been a pretty good sub throughout the season and Ariaudo is available too when needed, another promising youngster.
A Left winger? Okay, that might be a good idea, but we have Giovinco who has done great in that position. The only problem is, if we use a 4-3-1-2, we’re gonna need a sub for Del Piero, so we’d have to move Giovinco up to that position (from the left midfield), and then the best choice we would have left for a left midfielder would be Tiago, and that’s not really great cause he’s more of a central midfielder i think. So i think signing either Silva or Schweinsteiger would be great because i think they can both play that position, and Diego would be a great signing too, but if he cant play in left midfield, then we dont really need him as much cause we need a left midfielder, not a right one (we have plenty with Camoranesi, Salihamidzic, and Marchionni). And i say we should bring in a former player for the Manager if we get rid of Ranieri. Roberto Baggio would do a great job and should hire Dino Zoff as the Goalkeeper Coach, that would be amazing. And question, would we be allowed to hire Fabio Capello back? Honestly, there was alot of controversy with him, but he also did a legit great job. Although, I dont think Ranieri’s actually been doing all that bad. We did great in the Champions League group stage, we’re still in the Coppa Italia, and we’re 7 points off of first place in Serie A, only behind Inter who have had a phenomenal season. Yea he makes some ridiculously late substitutions and insists on using a 4-4-2 position which doesnt work as well with Juve as a 4-3-1-2 or other formations, but he still gets the job done, and is a respectful guy.

Armando, you still want Amelia after yesterday? Now thats some dedicated man love! j/k
Juve is underachieving in my opinion..If Chelsea knocks out Ranieri, I think Juve should soon follow. Im not going to go indepth, but basically Juves time is now..DelPiero, Trez, and obviously Nedved are at the end of their respective careers..Its time for some silverware and I am pretty sure the Tinkerman wont deliver

Didnt see the Palermo game yesterday…
While i agree Nedved is at the end of his career, ADP and Trez still have some years left in them. Trez is only 31 (maybe 32), and ADP has said he wants to play till he’s 40.

Any information regarding the Lazio tie? I heard rumours suggesting Del Piero and Buffon won’t feature, I’m sure you guys know more.
There’s a preview for the game on our blog now if you wish to check it out. I’m looking forward to this tie, hope to see a preview at your end.
Tomorrow is a test for us but I think it’s the same for Juve. I think you have one of the world’s best team builders but is Ranieri a real winner? I know you have some born winners on the field but can the coach give your youngsters the same mentality? It’s one thing to be challenging and another to win trophies. I think to some extent, both Lazio and Juve have the same obstacles to overcome and for that reason, it should be a fascinating encounter despite the gulf in quality. What do you guys think?

Haha whoa, chill out Sam.
Re: Amelia, I think Manninger is a better keeper. I think he could easily be starting for any team in Italy, except for Inter/Juve/Fiorentina. Yes, that includes Rioma.
Del Piero hasn´t played withdrawn in ages, and when he has, it hasn´t been too effective. He´s much better up front where he can get into the penalty area and cause problems.
At Center-back, Chiellini and Legro are solid. Mellberg is a great backup. But what if one of themw as out for 3-4 months? We´ve been very lucky this season with 2 center-backs injured all season that Legro/Chiellini have remained pretty much injury-free.
Speaking of watching games, have you seen De Ceglie at left-back? At the beginning of this season I was hoping for him to immediately replace Molinaro. But he was leaving way too much space back there and is arguably culpable on several goals. After seeing his display against Milan (and a few others) at a left-mid position, I´d much rather see him get the nod up there. If we don´t spill out for a left-mid, I see no problem in setting up De Ceglie as our starter.
Capello, fuck no. He might have won us titles, but we were miserable in Europe, alla Inter. Plus he´s a dirty traitor. I hated him to begin wtih though, so take that for what it´s worth. Baggio? No. I want a coach with experience, I´d like a young ambitious manager who has shown competence. If he´s Juventino, even better. My shortlist- Deschamps, Gasperini, Prandelli. And yes, it´s a coincidence all 3 are Bianconeri.

“But he was leaving way too much space back there and is arguably culpable on several goals.”
exactly what molinaro does then. a player needs more than a 5 game run to show what hes got.

I think Del Piero would be just as effective behind the two strikers as up front with them, and overall it would just work better for the team, with both Trez and Amauri on the pitch at the same time, but without sacrificing ADP. And i dont think it’s been that long, for example, if you watch the Italy-Germany 06 WC Semi-final, he played very deep, and did well.
Amelia and Manninger are on the same level in my opinion, both top notch keepers, some of the best in Serie A. And they might even have the ability to start over Frey if they were out Fiorentina, the only two teams where it’s a certainty that they wouldnt be started is at Juventus (Buffon) and Inter (Cesar).
De Ceglie is much better than Molinaro at left back, and yea he can play left-midfielder too, but i think he’s more effective as left-back (he’s shown he can tackle, just look the beautiful, yet unfortunate tackle he did that got him injured), plus we have plenty to cover the left-mid position (Giovinco, Diego if he is signed, Nedved if he stays, and Tiago could probably play there too), whereas we only ahve Molinaro available at left-back, unless you want to put Chiellini there (that’s what he was years ago), but we need Giorgio in the middle. And by the way, i’m pretty sure De Ceglie played left-back against Milan.
You dont think Baggio would do well? Yea, it would be his first managing position, but i think he would do great, he was probably the greatest italian player to ever play, that’s the kind of thing that cant just be dismissed.
And at center back, we also have Ariaudo, so overall we have 4 center backs already available right now, with Chiellini, Legro, Mellberg, and Ariaudo. Plus when Knezevic comes back we have 5, and if Andrade ever recovers we’ll have 6. I think that’s plenty, even if Andrade doesnt make it back.
