In Defense of Diego

By: agiamba | May 20th, 2010

Over the past few weeks, the end-of-season reviews have been coming in, and most have labeled Diego as a major flop, Goal.com named him as the #1 transfer flop, and also in their Worst XI of the season. Juventini and non-Juventini alike have blamed him for our poor season, but they could not have been farther from the truth.

If You Haven’t Noticed, Our Team Kinda Sucks: First, institutionally, Juventus have incredible problems. The team was not built correctly to use a trequartista, during much of the season we have been playing with rubbish fullbacks, two defensive midfielders, and two static prima puntas. That doesn’t work. The team wasn’t properly built for the 4-3-1-2. Second of all, Diego is coming in from a foreign league to a badly struggling club. Difficult to make a real impact.

Diego Has Been Plenty Effective:

We just don’t notice how solid Diego has been because our team sucks so bad. Naturally, despite Juve’s failings this year, Diego was expected to waltz in and score Kaka-style goals. Unrealistic, but the Roma game set up high expectations. I have no doubt given a better lineup, Diego will be more prolific in scoring goals.

Diego has been labeled as a major failure in recent weeks, but it wasn’t really until yesterday that I realized how great he has been. While looking through the video of all Juventus goals from this season, I noticed how omnipresent Diego has been. I went through the videos and counted up how many goals Diego assisted, scored, or was involved in and calculated it against the total. Turns out he’s directly influenced 45% of Juve’s goals from this season. Not bad for someone coming in from a different league, particularly when you consider that Diego hasn’t played every game, whether due to injury (see last fall) or being rested. Counting the games he missed, it probably boosts it to somewhere around 55% or so, another words, he directly caused a goal more than every other game. Look at the second video, how often his set piece, cross, or accurate pass opened the game up and led to a goal.

He’s been barreled down a bit.

Nnahoj gave another great reason why Diego doesn’t deserve to be labeled a flop, in simpler statistics-

Sneijder
24 games, 4 goals, 6 assists

Diego
33 games, 5 goals, 7 assists (Coppa Italia goals v. Inter and Napoli as well)

While watching Juve games this season I always used to think that Diego was probably the most fouled player in the league. According to ESPN Soccernet, he was fouled 103 times in Serie A this season. Sneijder was fouled 38 times, by the way.

59463148

Has Diego played better than Sneidjer? Probably not. But given the simple numbers, it seems pretty clear that both have been protagonists for their club, and Inter’s success means Sneidjer is the “transfer of the season” and Juve’s miserable season has meant that Diego is the “Flop of Serie A.” Maybe it has something to do with Inter’s defense being rock solid (Lucio, Samuel, Chivu, Maicon, etc.) and Juve’s being piss-poor, conceding more than Atalanta?

So why is Diego considered such a flop? Simple- He’s not scoring as much as he did in the Bundesliga, Juve’s season has been piss poor, and the Roma game got everyone’s expectations very high. However……the numbers don’t support it, and I feel bad that Diego has taken so much criticism. Despite being jeered and criticized, Diego has never reacted badly to the tifosi and has played his heart out for the team this year. He doesn’t deserve the criticism, he deserves a reinforced squad and the support of the fans.

    Hello, first post here.
Honestly, I never understood all the bad press around Diego. Idiotic journalists (GOAL.COM, crappy Tuttosport, interista Gazzetta)only availiate a player by the number of goals scored, so, by that basis, they consider him a flop.
I've no doubts that he was, by far, the best player in the season, only surpassed by Chiellini.
Mostly with Ferrara and less with Zacc, Diego literally carried the team on his back. He was the only player in the midfield capable of properly passing the ball, the only one capable of a creative spark, of making a well conected play. It was painful to see him, a old-school trequartista, to always came back to his own box to get the ball. Imagine Iniesta or Xavi having to make all the work from defense to attack, with no Yaya Toure to pass them the ball. That was Diego: how then, having to play so close to the defense, could he score more goals? And does a trequartista really have to score a huge amount of goals? Or his main duty is to make the plays in order to creat goal opportunities: even in this sense, he had a remarkable season. If had gone to Inter, he would've been player of the season. No doubts of it.
Unfortunately, he makes me remember of great players like Pablo Aimar: always let down and uncapable of playing at 100% due to the ignorance and sheer crapiness of their coaches.

Diego is gone, he is one of my face players and deserves better but del neri and the management want to go back to boring old 442 for which diego has no place. Mancini wants him to hell be sold in the summer for 20m, hopefully playing with adebayor and tevez will make him truly shine rather than the likes of amauri and trez!

Off topic, but does anyone know if FSC will be carrying the Juve – Red Bulls game tomorrow?
P.S. Anyone else saw Amauri up there with Del Piero, Trez and Diego at the press conference? Ugh! I wanted to puke!

I wanted to reach through the screen and smack him in the face. I can't stand the fact that he's all over Nike's Juve kit ads!

Anyone know what time is the NYRB game??
  • Nnahoj
How ill would it have been if Platini had spat in one of those Inter players' face? LOL!

    Germans are useless!!!
  • Wow.. the final is all over US. I heard from a couple of guys that it is the first time they are showing the UCL final live on Fox Sports (which is supposed to be big) and the WSJ has the game on its home page!
  • Yeah.. the game itself is quite boring, isn't it? I wasn't expecting that. The 2008 final was much more entertaining.

    meh.

    Life goes on.

Inter looks like they've got the CL sowed up. I expected it. God hates us Juventini this year, and when Inter did the double over Roma I knew they were going to win the CL too. Sonofabitch.

Good lord. I saw a torero get nailed in the chest at Las Ventas a year ago, and I thought that was bad. That's awful, damn.

i just watched some old videos of diego at bremen, and he makes runs into the box and scores quite a lot of one on ones. but if he went into the box for juve, who would give the assist to him?...?
  • Jose
I love how the newspapers are saying Juve is about to buy Vargas, Juve has secured a deal for Theo Walcott, Juve is looking at Dzeko. I think the press has no idea of our market strategy and I really like it that way. I really hated it when the press said, Juve is after D'Agostino, then the week after Secco will confirm the rumor, a week after that Blanc would say we are really interested, and a week after that they come out and said, well we were just told the price and we don't think it is worth it. What kind of a negotiator asks the price last. I think Marotta is keeping things quiet, I hope rumors pick up once things are more or less secured and the players are getting their medicals done.
  • M
Frankly, I think even Giggs and CR7 would've had a hard time with that utter bullshit of a midfield that Zac loved to field.

@Johanna: LMAO :D Criscito seriously needs to buff up! I thought D&G would pick the more famous guys like Buffon and Cannavaro.

I must say, Marchisio strips down pretty well!
  • Great post, Alessio. In complete agreement. I think Diego still has a lot to offer. People may argue that he wasn't needed as we had Giovinco and needed to reinforce the defense first. That is true, but Secco being stupid should not take away from Diego's accomplishments. And Del Piero isn't getting any younger either...so we'll need both Diego and Giovinco in the future. There's no reason why both shouldn't be starting together.

I also agree that if Diego and Sneijder were switched, Diego would have had a great season at Inter while Sneijder would have flopped at Juve. The team surrouding the player makes a huge difference. One thing about Sneijder though was that he came for much less money than Diego. Sneijder would have been the type of signing Moggi would have made in the past.
  • M
    How about this....
    RW - DM - Marchisio - Giovinco
    -----Diego--------------
    -----------------ST-----

Gio can play on either wing so if we get Vargas it could potentially be..

    Gio - DM - Marchisio - Vargas
    -----Diego--------------
    -----------------ST-----
*Gio will have Caceres/other RB behind to help out defense. If he starts getting pushed over or bullied around then he can always be subbed. I don't really care just as long as they play the poor kid!!
  • Sam
I dont care who we buy as long as we play GIOVINCO!
  • Forza Juve
sorry i was supposed to post this on this post, but I wasn't really paying attention:
Using Diego as a 2nd striker in a 4-4-2 (or whatever other formation with “two” strikers) could actually work… Cuz Diego often drops deep into midfield to either help the midfield or ask for/collect the ball… Hence, if Del Neri tells him specifically to not drop TOO far into midfield, he can play as a (drifting?) 2nd striker that drops deep to occupy/harass the defensive midfielders of the opposition (very good example of this is how Muller from Bayern does it, though he’s obviously more of a striker)
Whereas if he he plays 4-3-1-2 then his dropping deep into midfield would cause there to be a huge gap between the lines, and effectively create a 4-4-0-2 (the 0 is there for a reason)…
  • Vargas' coming would directly improve Amauri's usefulness. I'm all for the move.
  • agiamba
Del Piero has been written off time and time again. He's still got the legs to play 90, just not twice a week. TeamGREASE summed it up well- Alex is Juventus. I found Juve 1897s statement pretty offensive as well.

Vargas would be great at left-wing, and maybe with Marotta we wouldn't get skinned. He's explosive, has great endurance and of course a hell of a shot.
  • M
    Mo:
20 million for Vargas? i say add another 5 million and we get David Silva

I've been hearing that Real Madrid want him too...

    TeamGREASE:
For me, Alex gets a blank check and the freedom to do whatever he wants. Forever.

    Agreed. I second that.

Besides being a club legend, he has really rapport with the younger players. I noticed that since the De-Ma-Gio boys made their debuts back in Serie B.

Another off-the-pitch reason for keeping him is that he is one of the few, if not the only, players whom the ultras are willing to listen to. They were probably about ready to storm the admin building and lynch Secco and Del Piero was the one who talked with the leaders.
  • Jorid
    I heart Alessandro Del Piero.

    That's all.
  • Mo
20 million for Vargas? i say add another 5 million and we get David Silva
  • First of all, amen Alessio. I loved what Diego brought this year, he worked HARD. I never understood the haters.

Second of all, I am only married to a Juve fan and even *I* know what Del Piero brings to the table. He is the heart of Juve, and a favorite worldwide. Whatever he has lost in speed or agility due to age he has compensated twice over in precision, wisdom, leadership, and vision on the pitch. That is what will help restore Juve to glory, that is why Del Neri has already addressed the importance of keeping him. Take him away and it will be a much longer road back to the top.
  • Ibrahim
"For me, Alex gets a blank check and the freedom to do whatever he wants. Forever."

    Second that TeamGREASE
  • I said that Inter/Toro fans are jealous. I have no idea how you feel towards him, except that you've been very critical of him in past posts. If I'm confusing you with someone else, then I cry your pardon.

And regarding whether you love Alex more than Juve or vise versa... For me Alex IS Juventus. I don't make a distinction between the two.

Careers like Del Piero's do not exist for every generation; it's something that can't be bought by Real Madrid or anyone. Appreciate it while you can.
