Firenze Sacked by the Bianconeri- Temporarily back in 4th

By: agiamba | March 6th, 2010

Fiorentina has been having a poor season, but that doesn’t mean this game was any easier. Fiorentina lives to beat Juventus, and ex-Juventini Prandelli, Marchionni, and Zanetti were out to prove a point. However, some individual inspired moves and an intelligent game from Zaccheroni meant Juventus managed to overcome a determined Viola, winning 2-1. Full review after the jump.

Saying goodbye to Florence?

LE PAGELLE:

Manninger: 6.5- A brilliant save on Gilardino at midhour to keep us in the game, that Gigi would be proud of. Two poor exits resulted in a goal, and Chiellini plowing over Keirrison, though.

Zebina: 5.5- Contributed little offensively, as he was constrained by the rampaging runs and shots of Vargas.
Legrottaglie: 6.5- Defensively solid, as he had Gilardino locked up for most of the game. Still playing better than Cannavaro.
Chiellini: 6.5- Typical Giorgio performance, as he physically dominated the backline, though he did plow over Keirrison. Missed picking up a player on Fiorentina’s goal.
De Ceglie: 5- Every Juve player who we’ve sold has come back to bite us in the ass. Marchionni was no different, as he was playing with a purpose today and gave De Ceglie a lot of trouble. I don’t blame him for Marchionni’s goal, though.

Scored with his head…..embarrassing.

Marchisio: 6.5- Fought hard for every ball in midfield, and played some excellent through balls as well. Much better passer of the ball than Melo or Sissoko. (Surprise, surprise)
Sissoko: 6.5- Held his own in midfield, and protected the defense well, particularly towards the end of the game.
Felipe Melo: 5.5- Did alright to contain Montolivo, but didn’t intercept or distribute particularly well.

Candreva: 6.5- Looked prepared for the game, and had a nice slicing throughball to Diego for his opener.
Diego: 7- Great game from the Brazilian. Moved into space well, scored a solid goal and was always looking to spearhead the Juve attack.

Trezeguet: 5.5- Was offside often, and didn’t really get any solid assists, except for an excellent one from Marchisio that Trez waited too long to pull the trigger.

Zaccheroni: 6.5- Had a point to prove today, with Prandelli tipped to take his spot at Juventus. His starting lineup was good, and obviously Grosso was an inspired sub.
Grosso: 6.5- Only really had one play in offense, but it was his goal and he took it very well.

Things I think I think:
#1- Communication, communication, communication: I don’t blame De Ceglie or Manninger for the goal. I think Manninger should have done a bit better with his exit. De Ceglie had two men to mark, as Chiellini failed to pick up his man, so all in all, there was a breakdown in organization and communication. Ditto for the Keirrison penalty incident. Needs to be a bit more communication between the keeper and defense.
#2- De Ceglie had a fairly poor game today, and Grosso was determined from the outset. I just hope this doesn’t mean Zaccheroni will give Grosso his starting spot back.
#3- The Keirrison penalty incident- Not surprisingly, all the anti-Juventini have complained about it. No comment about the fact that Gilardino, for his golden chance that Manninger saved, was offside and not flagged. That would have been a serious error from the referee, if Gila had actually scored. Giving a penalty for the Keirrison incident would be extremely harsh.
#4- Speaking of the coaching-merry-go-round, Zaccheroni continues to impress. A win in Florence is pretty solid, and again we switched tactics smoothly to a 4-3-2-1. He’s shown to be very good with tactics, and I like that he does not have favorites (benching Grosso, Cannavaro) and gives everyone a chance to prove themselves. I like that, a lot.

Bentornato, Iaquinta!!

#5- Poulsen and Iaquinta are back…hurray! Amazing that Poulsen can recover from a broken ankle in shorter time than Iaquinta’s meniscus nightmare. Both are important members of the team and it’s good to have them back…they will go a long way in resting player that have been playing too much. (ADP, Melo)
#6- If only Giovinco would be back! Given that Zaccheroni has stated Diego is tired and needs a break, and his willingness to play De Ceglie over Grosso, I think he’d give Gio a shot. It’s very unfortunate that he ended up injured right now.
#7- Also, it’d be nice to have Caceres back. Zebina and Grygera aren’t exactly confidence-inspiring right now.
#8- Marchionni didn’t go psycho in his goal celebration. Respect.
#9- Team Eats- Nice and simple this weekend, I didn’t have any Florentine steak so I made some bruschetta. Delicious.

Alessio’s Shitlist:
-Amauri: (2 Weeks) Unfortunate timing for an injury, he’ll be on here for a bit. I’m sure he’s up all night, distraught that he’s on the list.
-Candreva: Today’s performance was good enough to remove him from the list.
-Cannavaro: (2 Weeks) In the last 3 months, Legrottaglie has played solid every game, with one or two nervy games. Cannavaro has looked nervy in everygame.
-Chimenti: (1 Week) I realized for the last two weeks, Pinsoglio has been our reserve keeper. Is this because Chimenti is injured, or is it because Zaccheroni realized Chimenti is a muppet and has no point in sitting on the bench?
-Grosso: Like Candreva, clearly his inspired performance today was in a successful effort to get off the list. Maybe I should keep him on there to maintain their form. His goal won us 3 points in Florence, that is excellent.
-Grygera: (2 Weeks)
-Zebina: (2 Weeks) He has been retroactively added to the list for last week, and today’s utterly average performance won’t change things.

    HollyMann, isn't Bobby Zamora injured?

there are never too many good players, we need all the help we can get
  • HolyMann
Alessio, what about Candreva, if he continues to play well for us, do we need Almiron? and how much better might he be than Candreva? at least with Candeva, if he continues to put in good performances, he's already proved himself with Juve...
  • Jae
oobia, Fulham's a decent team. I don't know about the win over liverpool but I saw the match against united and it wasn't a fluke they dominated that game. Fulham plays a pretty straight forward 4-4-2, Bobby Zamora is their danger man up top and Damien Duff (ex-Chelsea player) and Danny Murphy (ex-liverpool) are their creative midfielders (Murphy will miss the game as he was sent off against Shaktar). The way Juve's been playing I think if they win in Turin they should advance but getting a result in London won't be easy.
  • agiamba
So here's a question, yet again Almiron had a terrific game for Bari and is probably one of their candidates for player-of-the-season. Most of all, he's showing very impressive regista skills. Do we give him a chance? Unlike Tiago, Almiron never really got any playing time. And perhaps more importantly...would he want to come back?
  • agiamba
7-8mil for a decent defender sounds alright, if he's good enough, I don't care that he's Brazilian. Defenders seem to be less tempermental than flashy offensive players, anyways. That said, I'd rather go for one of the options already in Italy.

Zac said there were two players actively offside on Marchionni's goal...hard to tell because of the camera angles, but he could be right. Doubt any tears will be shed from other teams, though.
  • j
i guess alot will depend on the new coach, he will decide who to buy, etc

and no, i dont think zac will continue coaching juve, i'm sure we will go for other rising stars, or a veteran, unless he miraclously get us back into title contention

looking forward to UCL night and fulham! forza juve!
  • Never heard of Geromel before. Some nice tackles in that video, but he appears to be somewhat rough and clumsy. We already have Chiellini providing the muscle. His ideal partner would be someone who is calm, composed and adept at reading the game.
  • ooBia
What do you guys think about this from the Offside Calcio Mercato. He seems pretty solid and part Italian.
  • ooBia
When will Gio be back? A lot have been asking, with no answer. But anyhow, with Iaquinta back, Gio soon to be back and Diego and Candreva are playing beautiful together things are looking better. Sad Chiellini is injured.

Anyone know how strong Fulham are? I know they are currently 10th in the EPL, beating ManU and 'Pool earlier in the season, but I tend to think that is merely a fluke. Their style of play? Players to watch out for?
  • HolyMann
Giovinco was fit for i think the first 2 games with Zach, but nonetheless, its not enough to judge the coach over this period, like Alessio mentioned previously, since Zach has benched Cannavaro and Grosso, i also think that when Giovinco returns he'll have the chance to prove himself
  • ooBia
HolyMann, superb article. I read it with goosebumps through my whole body. But Gio was injured when Zac took the role of the new coach, so it's early to claim that Zac is overlooking Giovinco.

    Thanks for the share.

This makes me proud, I hope we take this momentum till the end and the rhythm even further:

  • Frank
Oobia thanks for clearing that up, heart skipped a beat when I first read the article
  • ooBia
Frank, if, God forbid, Germany take the 3rd spot in the coefficient this year, it will only apply for the 2011-2012 season.
  • Frank
A little disappointing news from goal.com....it seems that if German teams continue to perform well in the CL and Europa league, and the Italian sides continue to falter, our 4th CL spot will be given to the Germans. Conclusion, 4th in Serie A might not be enough to make a CL appearance next year... yikes
  • Alastair
Shit, I knew we had to face Napoli and Samp still, and Inter in week 34, but I didn't realize we also have to go to Milan again on the final day of the season. Let's hope fourth place doesn't come down to that, as the rest of the run-in is comparatively light.

Palermo are travelling to Udine next week, while Samp are tied up with Bologna and Napoli have Fiorentina, too, so we have to make the most of hosting bottom-of-the-table Siena. And the week after Palermo and Napoli face the two Milan sides, so we have to beat Sampdoria.

These games shouldn't be so vital!
  • Mo
I believe the players "know best" and since all of them are complementing Zac and believe he is a "genius" and should coach juventus "for life" why not extend his contract beyond June if he manages to get us at least a CL spot? Btw we might not need to spend a thing for a regista we already have one...almiron! Yet again he makes it to goal's team of the week. Please don't give me the big fish small pond bullshit the guy was barely given a chance!
  • Alastair
Just glancing at the fixture list and the standings this morning, I really, really hope we don't come to regret losing that game to Palermo. I think they're too frail to last the distance to the end of the season, but we have some very tough encounters ahead.

Good job on finding some much needed comedy on a monday morning Jorid and Comrade

btw, Zac has really hit out for the brouhaha about the refs helping Juve. The more the time passes the more I am liking this man.
  • Blanda_Amania
Oh, man, Comrade, I felt so bad after I took a couple swings on the game. I'm a gentle girl, lol! Funny though, and there's a couple senators from here I'd like to put in that game. I'd try to smack their asses for being so irresponsible.
  • Jorid
Comrade: You are my fucking hero! Where did you find this game?
This HAS to be the absolute best anti-Inter on the web. It's funny even if you don't understand Italian and absolutely hilarious if you do:

  • agiamba
    Haha that is bad, saem...
  • saem: There are better places on web to vent anger than involve Haiti victims. http://lulubao.com/game/jokes/...
  • Jorid
^^^Oh God. I couldn't get myself to laugh out at this, but it was a great joke nonetheless. Well played.
  • saem
A container holding 250,000 Inter shirts was returned to Milano by the people of Haiti with a note. "We have no homes, no food and no water but we still have our dignity".
  • dweb
    *inter not milan.
  • dweb
i wonder how the refs fixed that draw for milan today. where is grandemou to tell us how unfair it was?
  • Blanda_Amania
At least we'll have De C' and Sissoko. Hopefully those two will help defense out by keeping the ball up field enough to give them breathing space between mop-ups, especially since it looks like Chiellini will be out and Canna might be in. Canna needs rest between his defensive plays. If Chiellini was in so much pain leaving the field, it looks pretty much like at least 3-4 weeks out for him. Booooo!
  • Sam
Alessio, to be fair to him injuries probably are what damaged his talent. At Parma he did have pace and the rest, but again injuries kept coming back.

At Juventus he was never really anything. Perhaps his only plus point was his work rate. Otherwise was only just average.

And great news for De Ceglie and Sissoko! But Keyser :(
  • agiamba
The day after the victory in Florence, the team met in Vinovo for a morning training session. Due to the heavy snowfall, the players trained on the indoor field, while those who took part in yesterday’s match stayed in the gym.

There were no problems for Paolo De Ceglie, who yesterday left the field due to injury. Giorgio Chiellini’s conditions will be verified tomorrow, after the defender felt a pain to the muscle of his left foot during the match.

In view of the mid-week Europa League match against Fulham, the team will return to the field tomorrow at 11:00hrs.

Good that De Ceglie and Sissoko are ok....tomorrow we'll find out how long we'll be without Keyser Giorgio for.
  • agiamba
Yeah, they need to work a bit more but we do recruit well in Italy, we've picked up some decent ones in Europe recently though. Carlos Garcia, Ekdal, YAgo.....let's see if they come good.
  • j
oh i forget to mention, but our overseas scouts are pretty lousy, we cant to unearth any gems, unlike milan, etc
  • j
i think zac is trying to improve, at least i hope so, this is how i interpret from his earlier subs, raneri used to be awful with this too, and he didnt change

i dont like balotelli, but i think he has great potential, so the question is will he turn out to be the next recoba? god that guy is a wasted talent, his curves are wicked, a pity
  • Nnahoj: Its the mentality of Inter fans that 'two wrongs make it right'. So, Balotelli's behavior is appropriate since other people have done things you mentioned. Samuel should not have gotten a red card against Chelsea because they have been on the end of poor refereeing decisions last year.

Oh.. the clown wins another Oscar for a blatant dive.
  • Nnahoj
No Alessio you're wrong. Balotelli is not a clown because, according to "you know who", he's "never slapped a line judge, spit on someone, paraded around Milan telling people to put their trophies in their asses, told a referee to go fuck himself, intentionally broken someone else’s leg with a vicious tackle from behind or broken someone’s nose on purpose" and by saying otherwise you are obviously jealous - either that or you're a racist.
  • agiamba
And Interistas said Del Piero dives...Balotelli is a clown
