Europe Awaits UEFA Champions League Draw

By: roberto | December 18th, 2008

Gather round the fire children, it’s time we find out who we square off against for the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League. Don’t get too excited though as the first set of matches won’t go for another two months. Oh well this gives us plenty of time to hone our voodoo techniques. Here’s a thought though: Who would you rather face? Finishing first in our group affords us the all-important second-leg home advantage (if there is one), however with more than one “favorite” putting in a lack-lustre qualifying effort, it makes this draw that much more erotic.

The draw takes place at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland, today from 12:00 CET.

Familiar faces

Ten of the sides that reached this stage last season are still in the running, with AC Milan, Sevilla FC, Celtic FC, FC Schalke 04, Olympiacos CFP and Fenerbahçe SK the absentees. The sides who were not in the last-16 draw last time around are Panathinaikos FC, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Club Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal CF, FC Bayern München and Juventus. Eight of the 16 teams in the draw – those that won their sections in the group stage – are seeded. The unseeded clubs are the group runners-up.

2008/09 UEFA Champions League
First knockout round – to be played 24/25 February and 10/11 March

D Liverpool FC (ENG) Club Atlético de Madrid (ESP)
E Manchester United FC (ENG) Villarreal CF (ESP)
F FC Bayern München (GER) Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
G FC Porto (POR) Arsenal FC (ENG)
Juventus (ITA) Real Madrid CF (ESP)

Further conditions

  • Clubs from the same association must not be drawn against each other.
  • The winners and runners-up of the same group must not be drawn against each other.
  • The group winners must not be drawn against each other.
  • The group runners-up must not be drawn against each other.
  • The group runners-up shall play their first-leg match at home.

Procedure

Under the draw procedure, eight blue balls containing the names of the group runners-up are placed in a bowl. A first ball is drawn from the bowl containing the group runners-up. The team drawn is placed as the home team of match 1. In accordance with the conditions of the draw, the computer will then show which group winners are eligible to play the runners-up of match 1. A bowl will be prepared with white balls containing the names of the group winners which are eligible to be drawn against the runners-up of match 1. A ball will be drawn from this bowl to complete the pairing of match 1. The team drawn is placed as the visiting team of match 1. This procedure is repeated for the remaining matches. If the computer indicates that only one group winner can be drawn, there will be no draw.

Fixture days

In accordance with the competition regulations, the UEFA Administration, following the principles set by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee, will determine which games will be played on Tuesday or Wednesday. The draw result and full fixture list will be available after the draw ceremony at 12.45CET.

Yeah I've kinda thought about that before....we could create our own chat on Mibbit.com, on some random server.
  • calisi
In a way I guess but if we started something maybe others from the offside would join and it could be Italian football discussion all the time
  • Aren't we doing that right now?
  • calisi
We should host a chat on IRC/AIM
  • agiamba
    Thanks Bash.

Alessandro, I think I'm hitting up the Real Madrid-Liverpool game in Madrid. Don't have to travel, so why the hell not?
  • calisi
Really wish Juve was on today but I suppose I will watch Inter after this last EPL game.
  • calisi
Yeah that is true. I would like to go to South Africa too. Arsenal v Roma on the 11th too, in Rome. Might as well just hit all three games if I actually go.
  • I'm torn between something like that, or saving a bit more and going to South Africa 2010. They're two different worlds; club vs country competitions.
  • calisi
March 8th is Torino vs Juve too..
  • calisi
Well that would be cool if alessio, alessandro and I could all meet up for the match.. come on roberto start collecting money!
  • alessandro d'agostino
im going to the madrid liverpool match at anfield as im in liverpool and im seriously thinking about the juve match at stamford bridge just to see pavel one least time
  • I officially hate both you and calisi, alessio.

"De Ceglie over Nedved anyday especially after what he did against Milan."

adam, wouldn't you rather see PDC in Molinaro's place instead of Nedved's? All things considered, Nedved is still the poster boy for consistency this year. Ranieri's doing well tactically by conditioning Paolo as a left-sided utility man, kinda like how Lippi did Zambrotta... but eventually I'd much rather see De Ceglie hone his craft at left-back.
  • calisi
They are in Turin for the March leg am I correct? Hm I would seriously like to do this, I will have to do some research on traveling abroad or if anyone has done this quite a few times and would like to give me some advice that would be much appreciated :) Ale are you able to grab my email from this page since you are an admin?
  • Bashar
for he's a jolly good fellow.. for he's a jolly good fellow.. for he's a jolly good feellooooow!!! Which nobody can denyyyy.

I think some offsiders might disagree with that last line but still.. Happy birthday Ale.. haha
  • agiamba
Yeah Calisi, I am seriously thinking about it. I'm studying at the Complutense University in Madrid next semester, so I'll be over in Europe. Just a short flight/train ride over to Turin.
  • calisi
Check out my fantasy team for serie a (limited to 100mil euros):

    Carrizo
Chiellini - Criscito - Portanova - De Ceglie
    Marchisio - Zanetti - Pazienza
Del Piero - Floccari - Gilardino
  • calisi
Hey alessio.. are you seriously thinking about going? Are you already going to be over there? I have been wanting to get to a Juve match and now that I have a real job and get paid time off, I would love to make the trip. I thought about going in May to a Serie A game on the weekend and at least being in Rome for the finals (since I probably couldn't get tickets).
  • adam
    Our team as of NOW***
  • adam
Our team as of know should be good against Chelsea, I just hope no one gets injured. The best lineup I've see this yer from Juve is the one we played against Milan. De Ceglie over Nedved anyday especially after what he did against Milan.
  • agiamba
Yeah Marco, actually I kind of wanted Arsenal to banish the last few CL experiences.

Chelski two years, or even last year would have scared me. But Scolari's Chelsea has plenty of holes in the armor that I'm sure we can exploit.
  • And so, once again, an English team.

Refresh my memory guys... didn't we like lose all of our matches against EPL teams since the year 2000? From the top of my head I remember playing Arsenal (and losing), and playing Liverpool twice (and losing). Lucky number 3 with Chelski? :D

Anyways yes, there is another draw for the Quarter-finals Ravi, at which point the complete playoff tree is made all the way till the final.
  • agiamba
I might be going to the Juve-Chelski game...

Ravi, I think it is redrawn after the round of 16.
  • lamagica
...that is, assuming you and giro manage to qualify for that gay couple adoption process first.
  • lamagica
kj, one day your grandchildren can brag about your team "counting for nothing" in the cl too.
  • kirby
but inter has serie A titles to show for their efforts ;)lol

    good luck against chelsea!!!
  • agiamba
Yeah....Romanista, consecutive quarterfinal finishes are nothing to be proud of. That's one step ahead of Inter.
  • Romanista
I'm not taking a swipe at you Ravi, in fact by your response I respect you alot. I was just a bit hot headed that you wanted to count out Roma when a manager like Arsene Wenger says that "they might be the strongest team in Italy at the moment". I'm not saying we are, but we should never be disregarded, look at the past 2 years, if not Man U I'm sure we would have gave Milan a run for their money.
  • Ravi
No one answered my question. Is there a second draw for upcoming knockout rounds?

Romanista, you're right. I really should know the format, but since Juve's been out of it so long I've forgotten :*(
  • Romanista
I wasn't the person that brought up the hypothetical question of being a quality side and "counting for something". And why change the subject? This about you not acknowledging that Roma are a quality side. So 3 goals against a team that has thrashed countless teams is luck? Please use your right side of the brain when speaking. And Ravi must be really wise, obviously not knowing that the CL format hasn't changed for 18 years makes him "wise" enough to judge a team through his Juevntini goggles.

I never bash other teams but in this case you obviously don't know a thing about Football.
  • KJ
"If we get to the final.."

Romanistas are so delusional.. How about worrying about Round 1
  • Romanista
We'll see come May if Roma doesn't count for anything KJ. If we get to the final I suggest you hide in a corner and blog with your little siblings while playing Pac-Man with both hands tied behind your back.
  • guly
    Forza Juve! Bring on Chelsea!
btw, i got what I wished for in Arsenal vs Roma, showdown of two tactical geniuses in Wenger and Spalletti.
  • KJ
    "(Roma doesn't count..for anything)"

Ravi, you are a wise man
  • calisi
I was curious about the same, Ravi.
  • Ravi
Chelsea! If we had to be drawn against any English side I'm glad it was them. We've yet to play them since their massive influx of $$$ and I'm hoping they're not up to the job. In fact, I don't think they've faced any Italian team in a knockout stage yet (Roma doesn't count.. for anything)

I was wondering though, from this draw can we tell who's facing who in the following knockout rounds? Will Juve play the winner of Villarreal CF (ESP) v Panathinaikos FC (GRE) or what?
  • calisi
I can see it now.. Momo just breaking Deco in half.
  • Well I got what I wished for... we're gonna beat those blues and we're gonna do it for Ranieri!

This is also really good for Italy, if we can come out on top of these English teams. Unfortunately that requires us rooting for Inter/Roma for a few legs but as long as Juve comes out in the finals that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
  • calisi
This is great, hopefully I get to watch the match with my cousin, a big Chelsea fan and we dominate!
