The Origin of Christmas in November

By: alessio | November 8th, 2009

It’s that time of year, again. 35 years ago, 3 wise men saw a bright star in the sky. Instead of camels, they took an Alitalia flight to Milan, vowing never to fly that worthless airline again. They hopped in a FIAT 500, searching for the source of the light, much as an excited drunk Irishman chases for the end of the rainbow, only to find it is in fact a toilet already occupied with another drunk vomiting Irishman. The wise men were not to be as disappointed, however.

Finding the star was not in Milan, they followed the A4 towards Venice. Was the light above Bergamo? No. Brescia? No. And neither was it in Verona, Vicenza, or Padova. It must be in Venice, they agreed, which is the end of the A4 highway. But it was not so. Confused, they headed north. Maybe it wasn’t in Italy? After all, as my Dad says, Jesus was born in Israel because God couldn’t find a virgin in all of Italy.

About 70 miles from the Austrian border, they left the highway into a small rural town in Veneto, Conegliano, not far from Treviso. And there he was. Rumor has it one of the wise men forgot a gift for the young child; the first two presented a pair of Adidas Copa Mundial boots, and the other a simple football. The third, only had a strange pair of sideburns that resembled a trimmed Elvis.

It was that day, November 9th, 1974 that our beloved Alessandro Del Piero was born. Today, we celebrate his 35th birthday and eagerly await his return. He is our all-time caps leader, he is our all time capocannoniere, and he is the soul of our club. Happy birthday, capitano.

Why do we love Del Piero so much? Is it his skill, his leadership, his class? It certainly is a combination of all of those things. But it is also his story- a young boy growing up in a small town in northern Italy, who dreamed of wearing the jersey of his beloved club. His father was an electrician, his mother stayed at home to watch him and his 9-year elder brother, Stefano, who is Del Piero’s longterm agent. (and briefly a professional player for Sampdoria) Del Piero said as a child, he played football and all of him and his friends dreamed of becoming footballers, and I’m sure as a child he would have loved to have played in Serie B, much less in Serie A as captain of his favorite club. His friends did not become professional footballers, and he did not expect to either. He once said he wanted to be a truck driver because his family did not have money and he wanted to travel.

adp_striscione_compleanno7

Spotted by scouts from Padova, it was a meteoric rise for our beloved bandiera who won the Champion’s League in his first try, scoring 6 goals in 11 games at age 21. And he hasn’t stopped, becoming the top-scorer of Juve. It wasn’t easy, though. Del Piero has never been assured of his spot at Juventus, just months after being named captain by his teammates, a catastrophic injury derailed his career, indeed, it could have ended it. But Del Piero returned. Competition has always been there in the forms of Zidane, Inzaghi, Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic, Miccoli, Mutu, etc, yet he has always proven his worth. Written off by the media time and time again, he won two Capocannoniere titles after turning 30, and at age 35 continues to be a reference point with our squad.

Also on YouTube, there is a pretty good YouTube video (unembeddable) divided in 9 parts, in English, about Del Piero’s Career. Here are all the 9 different segments on YouTube. Do you have any other Del Piero videos you love? Post them below in the comments section!

Lastly…Del Piero’s personal website is temporarily down, with a cryptic message- “For you, we have created a truly special surprise. Return Monday to discover it.”

Good write up Ale. And so true about Alitalia, what a dump airline.

My flight from Amsterdam to Rome: 3 male flight attendants, one 55 year old nonna stewardess, those awesome green seats, and a class full of screaming 13 year olds. Epic!!!

Growing up my favorite player was always Roberto Baggio(the combination of being italian and having the 1994 world cup in US as my first real recollection of following soccer go figure he was my choice!) but soon because of him i realized early my team would be Juventus. And not knowing how the business of football worked I was sad when Baggio left, even at age 10 i suppose. However, I remember one player caught my eye and immediately took the space the Baggio transfer had left in my heart. It was ADP naturally. And ever since I have been a staunch supporter and defender of all things ADP. Even with his hot and cold National team form, I always pulled for him to be in the squad(I felt hurt personally when everyone blamed him for EURO 2000 and vindicated as that ball flew in the top corner against Germany at the WC 2006) but his form for our team has always been nothing short of genius. Not sure there will ever be another servant of any club quite like him. Loyalty can not be understated in this instance. I tell my friend everyday just wait til Del Piero gets to play this year, he is what Juve misses on the field and in the dressing room. Happy Birthday capitano! Forever my favorite player!

Del Piero has always been one of my favourite players, he has always showed such class, technique, skill and has just been immense, but one must wonder what could have been had it not been for the injuries he has suffered throughout his professional career, i personally believe he would have achieved a lot more.

Oh and I’m just wondering if anyone would care to join me on Tiki-Taka to populate and grow the Juventus and Italian Football community. We are only a month old, however we already have 1,000+ members and 30,000+ posts, so we are rapidly expanding. I’m TB. I’m an Italian Football and Juventus Mod on the site and i hope you will sign up and i look forward to having some good Juve discussion. The Link is:

    ALITALIA is an abbreviation of:
Always Late In Take-off Always Late In Arrival!
I wonder if the founders thought about that.

You’re right Ale, that was an away game VS. Bari that I think we won. I remember it was in February of the 2001-2002 season I think?
TB: He would have easily won a Ballon d’Or(with Moggi’s help of course!), and would find himself with even more caps and goals for both Juve and the Italy team. His 1997-1998 injury took a whole year out of his career pretty much.

On a side note I have been watching Bari games lately to check out Ranoucchia, who has huge potential but I feel Zapata is more suited for us, anyways it was the unlikely Almiron who caught my attention! He was putting in good tackles and dictating play and I am not talking about one game wonder here but rather 3 to 4 games at least. Is he worthy of a call back? It’s still too early to judge but certainly not obsurred given tiago and poulson are getting decent playing time without putting in a stand out performance!!!

Sam DJ: Yes, that would be Secco’s dumb ass. I think he was really young there, still in his 20’s I think?

Mo, my answer to your questions rhymes with your name. Why? I think he is one of those players that plays well for small clubs but is crap at big clubs. I think the pressure, intensity, and demands at a big club get to him. Plus his experience with Juve fans will not help his situation if he comes back and gets in a game.

I say we let him be a superstar at a small club, with a clause in his contract that against Juve he is only allowed performances like the ones he gave for our club :)

happy birthday ADP, and did anyone catch Secco’s reaction after Juve’s 4th and Trez’s 167th? Blanc went to go shake Secco’s hand “like well done”, but Secco looked on stoically and didn’t return the shake. After Diego’s goal however, Blanc gave Secco a little one-armed hug like “I told you so”.

i did see that… I think secco was thinking with the way the game was going back and forth he didnt want to count his chickens before they hatched sort of thing… and to be honest I was right there with him, never know with our defense sometimes! but I do love putting in 5 goals!

Porto have made an official offer of 5.5 million Euros for Juventus’ back-up left-back Cristian Molinaro…IN MY FM10 file lol. If only life could be that easy.
I suggest we terminate Molinaro’s contract, and approach to sign her:

Already looks like a better player to me.

Shit it looks like Secco hasn’t aged at all since Lippi’s era. Something’s wrong here, he sold his soul to the devil for eternal youth I bet.

Del Piero would be an incredible club President for us some day and when that time comes Gianni Agnelli will be looking down smiling. But until then, ADP’s got a lot more goals left to score.

    Happy Birthday Alex!

Happy birthday to class personified. ”Bandiere” are gone from Italian soccer: exit Maldini, there’s only Totti and ADP left. Stick around for as long as possible guys, the beautiful game needs you.

What do you guys think? I think he is untested and a bit risky. Plus, I was only partially impressed when he debuted for Inter against Man Utd (i think). He may do well at Juve tho.

    Should we go for him?
