Chicken Soup

By: roberto | October 24th, 2008

Amidst the tragedy of two Juventus supporters who lost their lives in a horrible bus crash just hours before kick-off, our Bianconeri took to the field later that evening for what will only be described as a pivotal point in our season thus far. With just two points in four Serie A matches heading into that gigantic club clash, Ranieri had probably wished the night before in bed that it was only a question of correcting poor form. But even despite the lengthy list of absentees, the Tinkerman’s men played with strength and pride; a fitting testament to the magic that is and always will be Juventus.

First though, credit must be given where credit is due. Real Madrid played one heck of a game. The way they stretched the field in the second-half with annoying accuracy would’ve frustrated opponents protecting an even larger goal margin. In addition to the Spaniards enjoying 64 % of ball possession including a Sneijder effort that had everyone beat but the post, the patience of many Juventini disappeared as Ruud was left shamefully wide open to pull his club back within one.

I’m not gonna lie, for a while there I was freaking out. Images of Molinaro tripping over his feet trying to catch Robben or Drenthe from behind looped over and over in my mind. I’m telling you, football is the beautiful game but it can give you the runs sometimes. To my surprise though, Molinaro had a solid game. He linked up nicely down field several times with Pavel and Del Piero, and shouldn’t be blamed for the visitor’s goal as he was stuck between guarding two men. Speaking of Pavel and Del Piero, they each had fantastic showings themselves. The Czechs hair never looked so good as he controlled our centre midfield with good enthusiasm. We’ll see if he’s got enough left in the tank for Torino.

From a tactical perspective, Ranieri was pleased that they had played Madrid effectively. “We were fortunate to take the lead early on and could therefore contain Real Madrid and focus on the counter”. True, the counter is a solid strategy, but looking back in that situation we were way too quick to take our foot off the gas pedal. We went from an all out blitz to knock Madrid off of their game, to a box-defence in our own half with forty minutes left to play in the first. Against a side like that, I think that’s asking for trouble. Why not work ‘em a little longer? We were playing some really good footy, first stringers or not.

“Are we cured? No, I think we’re still not back to our best, although that was some great chicken soup,” said Buffon. Chicken soup… it’s so simple it’s brilliant.

IERI… OGGI… DOMANI… SEMPRE JUVE!!!

  • I don't know how to explain the tunnel scene, Gio and Pavel were talking to each other and Pavel ruffled Gio's (whatever was left of it) hair/bald head, and Gio gave him a low five, something like that. Very like a mentor-student thing.
  • Thanks adam d. If i can touch at least one person's heart out there I know all my hard work was worth it.
  • hahah woah, yea I changed around that comment.

KJ the game is delayed an hour right?
  • agiamba
Maybe Toni is now "the ridiculously overrated Amauri" now.
  • roberto, Toni's the "ridiculously rich man's Amauri" maybe... ;)

mike, that's good news for Italy. I can't believe the odd situation I now find myself in: wishing Adriano to continue doing well for Inter...
  • KJ
"No offense to Palermo fans, but now that he’s with us I imagine he’ll show up on his radar"

none taken.i always thought that was the reason as well
  • Marco, I can imagine Dunga will be calling Amauri up in the near future for Brazil. Dunga wants to see consistency in the big man, and personally I'm surprised why he can't expect that from Amauri already. His remarkable abilities in the air and on the ground have proved to many he's a unique talent, and that his success is not a product of luck. The lad works hard every time he steps on the pitch and is enjoying success because he's got game pure and simple. Dunga sounds like a good coach, but one who might let his ego get in the way of a good thing. Camoranesi has become such a huge asset for Italy over the years that I'm sure more than a few people in Argentina are sour over what could've been. Let's hope Dunga makes the same mistake.
  • agiamba
Alessandro I remember Lyon and Roma were very close to Camoranesi, I don't remember Inter but so it goes, eh.

Some good results for us this weekend, Roma loses, Inter held at home by Genoa...we just need some consistency!
  • KJ
riomma loses again! now wish palermo luck against the gypsy!
  • adam d
great review roberto..much better than alessio!!!

    please keep doing them!
  • alessandro d'agostino
what happened between pavel and gio? they seem to be very close
  • More injuries for Juventus.

Anyone saw the Nedved-Gio moment in the tunnel when they came out for 2nd half? :)

I think Molinaro has improved tremendously in this game and vs Real, and Legro dedicated the win to him too.
  • alessandro d'agostino
alessio i was positive, and most of italia, at one point that camoranesi was joining inter and i cant remember who trezeguet was going to join. i think he was linked to liverpool more than anyone. but canna always said he wanted to stay but gigli sold him which was shameful as he kept saying he would stay if juve were in serie a and deducted 30 points! him and chiellini would have been the best defender pairing in the world
  • mike
Marco...here what Dunga thinks of Amauri:

    On a side note-
    http://www.channel4.com/sport/...

Cannavaro’s departure was particularly painful, as he had made protestations of loyalty to the Old Lady up to a few days before he left. Had Juve’s senior executives made an effort, he would have most likely stayed on, as did Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved.

I know Camo+Trez demanded to leave, but is this true? Calciopoli is a bit hazy in my memory...I remember Ibra seemed destined to stay for most of the summer.
  • That's his wife Mike.

Amauri, the "poor man's Luca Toni" is turning into something immensely far better. He can outmuscle his opponents, he can score with his foot, he can score with his head, but more importantly.. he can run & dribble!! (something which Toni can't do) Did you see that acceleration on the goal?

I am seriously praying Dunga doesn't get any bright ideas in the near future.
  • mike
Unbelievable, we may end up having even more players on the injury list. Apparently, Grygera was injured on the first half and Ranieri intended to replace him with Brazzo on the second half. However Brazzo started suffering from muscular pain while warming up, from there the decision to use Mellberg. Amauri is also playing with an injury on his quadriceps. Will it ever end....
  • mike
on Amauri's shirt there was something dedicated to someone in Portuguese "VC MINHA VIDA" which translates into "VC MY LIFE".
  • Giro
    Amauri is a beast!
  • ReleaseTheKrasic
Anyone know what was on Amauri's shirt when he scored? He kept flashing something to the crowd. They had a good shot from the camera during a replay but i couldnt figure it out. Anyone have any ideas?
  • agiamba
Well, I also don't understand why we're not banging them in like last year but I'm not all that concerned. Last year sometimes we'd hit 5 in and then be unable to score against Empoli or Catania. It's much more important for us this year to be able to score consistently (grazie Amauri) than prolifically.
  • alessandro d'agostino
valuable three points but juve are just not the same team as last year i cant understand why not. you think del piero misses trezeguet? they played amazing together with the one touch passing
  • ale i can agree with you only about this being a bad derby. there was no flow to it most of the time, probably because torino couldn't stop fouling us. ranieri made the right subs and we got the very valuable three points.
  • alessandro d'agostino
that was one of the worst derbies i ever see! no passion from either side i couldnt believe it! and sissoko played average made some good tackles but he loses possession so much its just awful. he is still no juve standard
  • agiamba
yessir....not a vintage performance but it's a derby, what do you expect.

molinaro has really been impressing me lately, making good challenges and interceptions in the last two games. last year he was frequently caught out of position and not winning the ball back, but he's done well lately. good to hear applause from the fans from him today when he made a good interception.

last season, i thought legrottaglie played great but this season he's been even better. last season he held his own, but today he really covered for the mistakes of others or good plays from the Toro, he's really become a leader in defense
  • KJ
I think Juve Nation is starting to see who the fuck Amauri is!
  • roll whatever
  • let the good times rool
  • agiamba
Giovinco on for De Ceglie at left-wing
  • What a goal Amauri! 1-0 Juventus

Great move through the legs of his man, then holds off another defender before he slides it under the keeper. World class!
  • alessandro d'agostino
and put giovinco on i cant understand why he isnt on and molinaro is i dont know any other manager that would not play him but play molinaro
  • BOSSMAN amauri
  • alessandro d'agostino
amauri is just to good for you!
  • agiamba
    AMAURI! HE CANT STOP SCORING!!
  • agiamba
Yeah, Nedved has been MOTM right now.

I like this sub, Mellberg for Grygera. Grygera needs a break, and Mellberg has played at right-back a lot more than CB for the last few years.
  • I can't believe Nedved got back on the field after that. He's playing that centre midfielder role perfectly tonight, much better then he did against Real Madrid. You can see it in the way he positions himself behind the ball in space.

Giovinco can provide that injection of creativity I think this game needs in the second half. Seba could easily be able to play almost any role in attack and midfield here. I'd like to see him come on for De Ceglie though. A little more speed never hurt nobody.
  • I thought your boy Nedved was gonna be added to the injury list for a second. Looks like he realy wanted that missed yellow card,
  • agiamba
Giro, dunno. Our frontline is a bit packed right now, so he might be out for 2 years before getting a chance here.

Sorry for not liveblogging. Like Roberto, I have a love affair with beer. $2 import drafts at a local bar on Fridays...
  • Neo
I don't think so...and it makes no sense why he's not on the left wing right now...Juve are ten times more dangerous with him on the field..
  • alessandro d'agostino
    is giovinco injured?
