Calling All (older) Calcio fans- Marchisio, the new Tardelli?

By: alessio | October 11th, 2009

God the international break is boring.

A lot of you, unfortunately, won’t be able to help with this post. But in musing Marchisio’s injury, I’ve been thinking about how he’s called the “new Tardelli” by the media. Case in point, after his brilliantly taken goal against Livorno, Fabio Caressa said “ogni giorno sembra piu Tardelli,” or “Every day he resembles more like Tardelli.” Can someone explain a bit in-depth Tardelli’s style of play? Alas, I was not even born when he left the peninsula for Ireland, so all I know about him is some vague anecdotes from family and occasional YouTube videos, every single one which of course features the Tardelli scream. His wikipedia says he was a “He was well known for his battling qualities, primarily his stamina and mentality as well as his ruthless tackling. He was also known for his technical abilities and his ability to score vital goals.” That doesn’t exactly seal the comparison to Marchisio for me. Would one of our older Calcio fans please enlighten us a bit more on why he seems so much like him? To me, he reminds me of a hybrid of Conte/Tacchinardi. Is it the fact that he’s a complete midfielder? Someone help me out here!

I still remember when we were in serie B and I was watching a game with my real madrid friend.I kept telling him about Marchisio and he told me that once we get back to serie A everybody will forget him.I told him to wait and see and I was right.Last year before the season started everyone was talking about Giovinco but I was waiting to see Marchisio.I hope this operation doesn’t effect his form

Not to toot my own horn…but from September 2008-

Who will be our breakout star this season?
Alessio: Hard decision, I think all our signings will do well. I was enthusiastic about signing Tiago, but he had shown elements of his lack of “personality” before, and Almiron was unproven at a top level. I can’t see that happening to our new arrivals. Maybe nothing eye-popping, but I don’t think they’ll flop. Everyone says Giovinco, and I think he will light it up. I’ll go with Marchisio though, he really impressed me against Artmedia. I’d been talking him up before but he distributed the ball well with good passing, showed some good individual skills, and showed no hesitation in challenging for the ball. His performance made me forget about Xabi Alonso already, let’s hope he continues to grow.

not old enough to know tardelli, but i do know that meniscus surgery isn’t so good for longevity. shouldn’t be a big deal for buffon, who’s already up there, but for marchisio, i think this may eventually shorten his career. the meniscus is part of the padding for the knee, and the solution for a torn meniscus is to remove some of it. an elite athlete needs every bit of knee padding he can get.

Especially one that covers as much ground as him, alex w. I guess you can see positives of Italian football here- had he started at 17-18, he would have already had that injury, perhaps even worse.

Alex W, so does that mean that he could be at an increased risk of future knee injuries?

perhaps he would have had that injury. each individual’s unique knee geometry definitely predisposes some to that kind of tear. but it didnt happen gradually over time. meniscus tears happen quickly when a knee is stressed unnaturally. you guys were just unlucky : (

i dont think he has an increase in likelihood of future injuries. the meniscus isnt a ligament. but he will likely have pain issues as he gets older. its a bit like early onset arthritis.

Well that would be just as bad. You can’t play effectively if you have pain.

Anyway, thanks for the info mate.

My dad always talked in awe about Tardelli. I am too young to have seen play as well, but my dad’s explanation was that players feared him, feared of going past him. I don’t think anyone fears Marchisio, at least not yet.

On a totally different tangent, I would really like to discuss the Pandev to Juve possibility with you Juve fanatics. Maybe later in the week ale or roberto can post something about it? I am Macedonian and I would love to see Pandev in a Juve shirt, but even I am a skeptic as to how he can help us uniquely.

IMO Matchisio is the most important player on your team, with Gigi and Cannavaro being right behind him.

At Vinovo the outstanding presence of Claudio Marchisio who, after two days from his meniscus surgery intervention, has immediately started cares.

lets hope marchisio have a speedy recovery, we must not rush his recovery though.

anyway i never watch pandev played before, not too convinced of his scoring ratios, if we are buying a striker, i think there are better options right, like rossi, etc.

I see Rossi and Pandev as the same type of player, just that Rossi’s younger and Pandev will be cheaper. Rossi might be marginally better.

I really dont see why there is a whole lot of fuss over Pandev, he’s not that good imo.

And after what he’s been doing at Lazio I really dont want him at Juve. Just imagine what he will do to us if he wants to move to Barca or Madrid and we block him.
