Breaking It Down
By: roberto | May 24th, 2009First, second, and third place in Italy qualify directly for the group stage of 32 teams, while the fourth placed team must begin their efforts earlier during the third stage of the qualifying rounds. As it stands, our club’s “tied” with Milan at 71 points apiece. Fiorentina, who tied with Lecce this afternoon, remains in fourth with 68 points. But oh my, how the devil’s in the details.
Right down to the wire. Typical Italians. For Juventus, a win next week against Lazio will ensure a second place finish in Serie A (no matter what Milan or Fiorentina do). That my friends is a great feeling after a weekend of great results. Here’s the way the cookie crumbles:
Juventus Win: Second place and automatic round of 32 qualification.
Juventus Tie/Milan Tie: We still get second.
Juventus Tie/Loss Milan Win: We’ve got third place, but the automatic round of 32 as well.
Juventus Defeat/Milan Defeat: Yup, we still get second. Here’s why:
Florence – Italy, Sunday August 31 2008, 08:30 PM
Stadio “Artemio Franchi”
Fiorentina 1 – Juventus 1
Goalscorers: Nedvěd at 39′; Gilardino at 44′
Turin – Italy, Sunday December 14 2008, 08:30 PM
Stadio Olimpico
Juventus 4 – Milan 2
Goalscorers: Del Piero pen. at 16′, Pato at 31′, Chiellini at 34′, Amauri at 41′; Ambrosini at 11′, Amauri at 24′
Turin – Italy, Sunday January 25 2009, 03:00 PM
Stadio Olimpico
Juventus 1 – Fiorentina 0
Goalscorer: Marchisio C. at 21′
Milan – Italy, Sunday May 10 2009, 08:30 PM
Stadio “Giuseppe Meazza” – San Siro
Milan 1 – Juventus 1
Goalscorers: Seedorf at 12′, Iaquinta at 15′
As you can see, we’ve got the head-to-head advantage over both Milan and Fiorentina. So we abso-fucking-lutely qualify for the round of 32 in the UEFA Champions League. Personally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Claudio Ranieri for the good work he did throughout this year. More specifically I’d like to applaud the way he always prepared our lads for battle against our rivals exceptionally well. It was our poor performances against those provincial teams that got his ass canned in the end.

Some things you might already know:
Prize Money
UEFA awards €3 million to each team that qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, plus €2.4 million for participating in the Group stage. A Group stage win is worth €600,000 and a draw is worth €300,000. In addition, UEFA pays each quarter finalist €2.5 million, €3 million for each semi-finalist, €4 million for the runners-up and €7 million for the winners.
Serie A
“Since Italy is currently rated as one of the top three European countries in terms of club football ratings, the top four teams in the Serie A qualified for the UEFA Champions League. The top three teams qualify directly to the group phase, while the fourth placed team enters the competition at the third qualifying round and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group phase. Teams finishing 5th and 6th qualify for the UEFA Europa League Tournament.”
“Since 2005–06, if two or more teams end the season with the same number of points, the ordering is determined by their head-to-head records. In case two or more teams have same total points and same head-to-head records, goal difference becomes the secondary deciding factor.” – Wikipedia
One more interesting thing to note about next week’s Milan-Fiorentina match. If Fiorentina can beat Milan by a larger margin then Milan beat them by earlier this season (1-0), the Viola would leapfrog Milan into third place. Here’s some highlights from Siena.

I would just like to say, to all that doubted Guardiola’s credentials as a manager, no coach can win a treble in his first season without being talented – regardless of the squad at his disposal. That’s all.

I did notice that Berlusconi fondled Pep’s hand for quite some time on that podium. What do you bet he made Pep a job offer?
Berlusconi is sooooo sleazy.

im interested in what berlusconi said to eto probably something racist. hes such a prick i cant believe anyone would want them as the leader of their country.
guardiola put together that side and has had them play the best football ever seen, consistently over a season and more importantly has given them a winning mentality. to take on the managers job at a club like barca when they have come off a really bad season and win the treble in your 1st season in charge? hes doing something right.

The possession by Barcelona was excellent, after the first goal it felt like Manchester never had the ball again. I was so glad to see Ronaldo not get all his expected calls too, haha.

I swear to god, if we let Trez go to Roma with Pizzarro of all shitty players to replace him, I will fly to Turin and beat Secco senseless.

The current rumors of the day are-
-Trez will likely be sold, strong possibility to Marseille
-The management wants Pandev as his replacement (really?!?!)
-Iaquinta and Nedved might be signing a contract extensionPosted from

ale, what is your take on having Nedved for another season? I like him and all but if it means getting Seba playing time do you think it is time for him to step down?

pandev is a solid player…but not what juve needs…defense man…defense!!…

Pandev is a “good” player, but think of what Trez has done it his career and it’s obvious that signing him would be a huge downgrade, even on current form. Given we’d lose money from the trade, I don’t know why we’d go for it.
Calisi, I do want Nedved another season but as a sub/reserve, which I think he would be ok with if Ferrara took him aside to say so. Can you imagine, whether as a left-mid or center-mid? Say Marchisio is injured, who would you rather take the field, even solely for sporting reasons, a rested Nedved or Tiago? Pavel has shown he’s still up to the grade this season.

That’s true, I’d be down for him as a sub. If Ranieri was at the head that wouldn’t happen I would figure.

Berlusconi is sooooo sleazy.Johanna, I think he was probably asking him if he wanted to go out trauling for chicks after the presentation ceremony had finished.
Berlu wouldnt want Pep anyway, he wants one of his golden children form late 80’s early 90’s
I was actually more sus about the way he interacted with some of the plays. Its a fine line between an off-the-cuff joke and tapping up

lol!
its hard for me to be too critical of the guy as far as football goes cos he has done alot for the club. That being said, the rumours he might sell the club soon dont exactly make me upset either.

you can argue that signing amauri compared to what trezeguet did in his career was a downgrade as well…

that said…i agree with you alessio…pandev not juve quality…he’s good for a middle to 2nd tier team..but not for a 1st tier team..

doubt it will happen…he’s ex-interista….
i’m sure it’s going to be between conte and ferrara…

Yea, it’s between Conte and Ferrara. But if we win this game by alot too, then i would seriously consider keeping Ferrara, who would then be a known winner, whereas Conte is a big more unknown at this level. Still though, it’s close, and would be very happy with either. Plus, we’re gonna destroy Lazio anyways, since their missing their top 4 attackers: Rocchi, Pandev, Inzaghi, and Zarate. Luckily for them they still have Brocchi and Foggia, two great players who can make up for some of the slack, but really, they dont have a chance, especially against our revamped Juve side that’s coming for revenge against Lazio (for eliminating up from the Coppa). I’m predicting a 5-0 win.
Also, i’m extremely happy to see Juve going after Christian Maggio. I’ve said all along he would be perfect for Juventus. He’s very similar to a young Zambrotta, great at attacking and shooting, can play on either side as a wingback though better on the right side, etc. He’s great, the best rightback in Serie A in my opinion only after Maicon. What a great signing he would be. Lippi’s also making a big mistake if he doesnt call up Maggio for the World Cup.

I agree Armando…wouldn’t mind seeing maggio wear a juve jersey…
