BigMac + Injuries= Disaster

By: agiamba | March 15th, 2010

What an odd weekend for Calcio. Inter gets thumped by Catania, both Roma and Juventus are held by relegation-battling teams in 3-3 draws, Genoa and Cagliari have a high scoring battle, Udinese sinks Palermo, and Lazio step closer to Serie B having been comprehensively defeated at the Stadio Olimpico by Bari. I love Serie A. I do not, however, like drawing 3-3 with Siena at home.

SOCCER-ITALY/
In contrast to Felipe Melo…

There were two more injuries that hurt us today- Legrottaglie went off (thankfully, as a precautionary measure) and was replaced in the center by Grygera, and Manninger missed the match (does anyone know why yet?) and was replaced by the 39-year old Grim Keeper, who has not played a professional game in 2 years. That said- clearly, the injuries were not the reason we drew. Legrottaglie addressed it in his comments after the game, that it was the fault of the team together and not Grygera individually. Obviously, he’s trying to keep the blame off his teammate, but he’s got a point.

The problem was after going up 3-0, we just simply turned off assuming that was good enough, but Siena knew there were 80 minutes left. I’m sure plenty of the players were already thinking about traveling to England later this week, and that lapse in concentration let Siena back into the game. The injury count, by the way, I believe is up to 58. A friend of mine posted that the last two seasons had a total of 75, assuming it was evenly distributed between the two, we’re currently at a 55% increase, and there’s plenty of the season left.

SOCCER-ITALY/
Look kids, this is how to ruin a great club!

LE PAGELLE:

Chimenti: 5.5- The choice was a young promising 20-year old who just won the Viareggio tournament and a 39-year old who had not played a professional game in two years. Does anyone else remember his performances this summer? Zac was going for his experience, but he didn’t look assuring at all out there. I won’t really fault him for any of the goals, but I don’t see the point in him playing. He’s on the team because the coaching staff and players like him, which is fine, he’s the team mascot, but don’t let him play.

Grygera: 3.5- A horror show. Yet another dreadful backpass to give Maccarone the opener, and then a completely avoidable penalty where he ungracefully knocked Big Mac over. He looked crappy on the wing, and even worse in the center. In the last month, Grygera has been god awful, I am sure his confidence is at rock bottom, and it’s hard to play yourself out of depression as a defender.
Cannavaro: 6.5- Should have closed down Maccarone better for his first goal, but marshaled the nervous defense well in Legrottaglie’s absence.
Legrottaglie: 6- We were relatively assured at the back until Legro went off. After the game, he said it was just precautionary and that he might be ready for the weekend, he’s suspended for Fulham anyways. After he went off, Grygera was moved to central defense and the game went from bad to worse.
De Ceglie: 5.5 A mediocre game, but not a poor one. Didn’t get forward as much as he could have, as Reginaldo looked spent. Less brilliant than he was when he ousted Grosso from his spot, but you know what, he’s young and needs continuity.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Marchisio: 5.5- It was clear Marchisio wasn’t ready for this game- he played heroically against Fulham, but he’s had a fever all week and he looked drained out there. Not surprisingly taken off for Camoranesi.
Felipe Melo: 4.5- Foully, nervous, and clearly not feeling confident. Got into a spat with the tifosi, and while he’s right it’s hard to play well when you’re being jeered by your own fans (Zebina knows well) it doesn’t help your cause by telling them to shut up when you’re already disliked. A crap performance, he needed to come off for Poulsen or anyone else.
Sissoko: 6.5- His passing is still average of course, but given how poor Felipe Melo was playing, for much of the night Sissoko had to play for two men, and he played well, having a hand in Del Piero’s first as well. A solid display.

Candreva: 6.5- Zaccheroni rightfully wanted to give Diego a break, so he played Candreva at his natural trequartista position, and he delivered. He did very well creating plenty of opportunities and Siena had little answer for him in the first half. Like the last few months, he completely disappeared in the 2nd though, a frustrating event that is becoming characteristic of him.

59906121
The patch turned gray in only 10 minutes.

Trezeguet: 6- Didn’t get any great chances, but he looked fairly dangerous up front and certainly drew a fair amount of attention from Siena’s defense.
Del Piero: 7.5- It is extremely obvious that Del Piero does not have it in him to play 90 twice a week anymore, but when properly rested, he is still world-class.

Zaccheroni: 5.5- He came out with a great plan and the team dully delivered, but we went to sleep and let Siena back in it. Zac should have been making changes and yelling at the players to maintain concentration- Grygera and Melo both needed to come off. Poulsen could have played in Melo’s role or even at CB covering, and Grosso

Things I think I think:
#1- Team Eats: Didn’t do it this week. 2 losses in the two times I haven’t gotten around to it. Coincidence? I think not. If anyone else did, what did you have? (Siena or Tuscan, I suppose)
#2- We’re screwed for Fulham. Chiellini, Manninger, and Legrottaglie won’t be ready (Legro is suspended anyways) so I imagine Zebina and Grygera will be playing prominent roles, hopefully in the good way. Rumors abound that Zaccheroni wasn’t too impressed with Chimenti (shocking) and that Pinsoglio might get his Juventus debut in London. Good idea or bad?
#3- Felipe Melo may get a permanent listing on the Juventus Offside Shitlist for his disgraceful actions on Sunday. Disgusting- for those who didn’t note, Melo fouled a player, some fans whistled him, and he yelled “Vaffanculo” at the tifosi. Claudio Zuliani said the following- He should deliver a public apology at the stadium over the microphone, he should receive a massive fine, and perhaps, be transfer listed and benched for the rest of the reason. It is completely unacceptable for a player to do that, and completely unprofessional. In the press today he said he wanted to apologize to the fans, but that’s not good enough. A month on the bench, and a public apology and as Zuliani said, we need to seriously start looking for a buyer.

Zuliani’s thoughts on Felipe Melo

#4- Caceres is out for a while, unfortunately. It seems he has issues with an abdominal strain, perhaps a hernia and he’s traveling to Barcelona with a few Juventus doctors to decide on the course of action, surgery might be necessary. With surgery, I’d guess he’d probably be out for the rest of the season, and that would cast serious doubts on whether the Uruguayan will be signed by Juventus this summer.
#5- Caceres was out in early February, and it was supposed to be 15-20 days but we now know the reason behind his longer absence. No such news for little Giovinco, who was supposed to be back by late February, early March but still isn’t participating in training. It’s a real damn shame, because it seems like now is the time for him to grab his chance with fatigue rampant through the side, and a coach who might be willing to play him. Hopefully Seba returns soon and gets a run out in the last 2 months of the season.
#6- Seedorf may be one of my favorite non-Juventini ever, and not because of his goal this weekend. The man exudes class, both on and off the pitch.

The Juventus Offside Shitlist:
-Amauri: (4 Weeks)
-Felipe Melo: (1 Week) For the record for other Juve players, here is how to get onto the list. Play like a bidone, and then tell the fans to STFU and “vaffanculo.” You’ll be here for a while, Felipe, with any luck, until you’re sold this summer.
-Chimenti: (3 Weeks) Didn’t look too assured out there at all, and rumors that Pinsoglio will get his debut. I went to look up how much he was paid in the Gazzetta report from last fall, but he’s not even on our list. Maybe he’s a volunteer!
-Grygera: (4 Weeks)- And we thought the Palermo game was a horror show…looks like Zdenek will be on here for a while.

Blanda - Actually, that's the plan! That was the dream since I was a kid...that's what happens when you have a Nonno who thinks he can do Moggi's job better than him (and my Nonno isn't even Juventino :P) Calling up our youth players would be the logical idea, no? But what exactly is logical about the way Juve is run these days? haha unfortunately from the looks of it he didn't call up any young defenders
  • Blanda_Amania
Marco: Believe me, I was scared looking at the call up list realizing that's all the defense we had!

Alessio: I think that line up can work if Poulson is careful. Definitely not Sissoko. All I think when he bears down on someone is "GODZILLA!". We need that in the middle.

Melo is capable of great things, I'm sure. I'm one of those that saw him improving from crap to decent, but apparently his emotions rule his game. If he can't keep them in check he's going to continually have set backs and always remain a crap or decent player at Juve.

Sofia: Good luck with your education! Get'er done then head right over to Juve Headquarters and apply. I wouldn't be an awful idea to scope out couple defenders from their youth pool. I'm sure they at least watched a few during those little scrimmages they play for training.

Andy,I see that a few of you think Caceres is fugs, but there's just something about him, and it's more to do with the way looks running around on the pitch to me. (I just noticed your comment on him, lol!)

Johonna: I thinking discussions are pretty healthy in here even when people don't agree!
  • Sofia
Blanda - thanks for the compliment. I'm actually studying to get into the master's program at the University of Torino for Sports Management, so this is pretty well what I live and breathe. I am one of very few girls down this route :P

dweb - that article was amazing! Lippi is my hero for actually calling them out on it :P

alessio - I am leaning towards the "Robinho/Adriano/Ronaldo/etc syndrome" in regards to your last comment.

Also, just wondering why none of the defence from the Primavera squad was given a callup instead of having to put one of our mids back there? Are they not ready?
  • agiamba
It's an interesting point, Daniel, and it's clear he plays different for Brazil than he does for Juve. The question is, is it tactical, is it because he has more faith from the coach/fans, or is it a Robinho/Adriano/Ronaldo/etc syndrome?
  • Daniel
I'm brazilian and the commentators here realized something about Melo. In all, and I mean ALL, games he got a cap, we didn't lose. I'm not saying he is the reason, but that can't be such a massive coincidence.
He can kick Paraguayans in the crotch now and then, but the original brazilian at the Viola (Dunga) trusts the man.
  • Just visited the Inter board. One of the comments:

You know what I thought when the game ended?

I thought that we are going to make so much money from this CL run, it’s not even going to be funny…

Why am I not surprised at all?
  • Gaetano
    Lol comrAde
  • Johonna: It was one of the faithful Inter troll who started it. In any case, by giving writing space to a person like MAD, you should be the last one to talk anything about toxicity.
  • Chelsea 1 - 3 UEFA?
  • gigi
Hangelund or whatever his name is .. the 10ft tall scandinavian wall will be missing from their defense .. thats a big loss for fulham.
  • agiamba
Toxic? I don't think there's too many anti-Inter comments or anything...if anything, we're embroiled in a toxic debate about Melo and the long-term future of the club. Frankly, Inter v. Chelsea isn't important to us.
  • Man - I came here to wish you guys good luck today.

After skimming the comments, though, I am rethinking my idea. It is positively toxic on this page.

    Yikes
  • agiamba
Personally, I hope we go this way against Fulham-

    Zebina Poulsen Cannavaro Grosso
  • dweb
this couldnt get more perfect! make sure to read the following article, its freaking amazing!
    http://goal.com/en/news/10/ita...
  • Marco
That is one Scary Backline! That's like telling any opposing team "Hey we're playing with no Dmen today - come and get us. I do like Poulson, but the other three are nightmarish!
  • Blanda_Amania
It would be wise to put the kid in for Fulham then to get him warmed up.

    For defense: Poulson/Zebina/Canna/Grosso

Zebina and Canna just need to make sure one of them stays close to home at all times for clean up.
  • Marco
Um, with all the talk about melo going on here, we seemed to have lost manninger for 15-20 days now. This injury situation just keeps getting worse. We have a very depleted backline for Fulham which is disturbing to say the least. Aside from the *in form* cannavaro do we even have any center backs available? Ick.
  • Blanda_Amania
Inter/Chels: Eto'o rocked my socks with his goal. The ball landed on his foot as if it were a pillow, then he finessed it into the back of the net. The service to him was perfection as well.

Sofia, passion for and knowledge of this team is amazing.
I too wonder about the intentions of these guys that come here to "point and laugh" at our misfortune. Their team played a beautiful game today. I'd share that with them if it didn't always sound like they just wanted to tell us that they pee farther than we do.
  • Jose
Sam, the reason why Melo plays better with Brazil is because he is happy when he plays with Brazil, you might say he is a professional and that should not matter but Brazilians are very emotional people (I am South American and most people down there are the same). The problem for him is that now he is playing bad he is getting jeered and therefore he is unhappy (with himself and with the fans) which makes his form drop continues. He needs a coach that will bring him peace and he will work better (Prandelli will do that), or a coach that benches him for a few matches until his confidence and emotional state have been sorted out.
  • Alastair
Sofia, it's simple insecurity. When we win, we celebrate. When they win, they have to come to us to make sure we know about it.

...which is why they will always be Italy's second team, at best.
  • Sam
With Brazil he is a completely different player. His passing is no where as bad and he a lot more consistent. Seeing his Brazil form is what made me excited when we signed him. But yeah don't know wtf he's doing when playing for us.
  • Sofia
I won't say anything more regarding Melo because he really isn't wirth it anymore. However I think its funny that the Inter trolls have nothing better to do than post her. LOL really shouldn't they be off celebrating their big win against Chelsea? They had a good match, unfortunately and now we never hear the end of it? Fuck maybe if we beat Fulham tomorrow we should go troll their posts...only we are wayy to classy for that shit. Theres the difference between Inter tifosi and Juve tifosi
  • ned lowe
    1. melo is a player who despite his innocent & harmless
looks has a VERY volatile personality...his records
at fiorentina (especially the brawl in the tunnel in
the game v cagliari) highlight that fact... somebody
shoulda read the dossier before they signed him!

    2. after a decent start to the season he's hit a sticky
patch n the fans have gotten on his back because they
think he's worthless oriundi and utter shite. these
feelings are exarcebated by the feeling that
d'agostino whom the club initially pursued and
who's italian would have done much better.

    3. anyone who has watched melo play for brazil even
during his time at juve, knows that he is
(despite what his club form may suggest!) at the very
least a very decent player.melo knows this as well
and it only accentuates his frustration with his juve
form. it also makes him highly unlikely to take
kindly to taunts, jeers & suggestions that he's the
reason why juve have stuttered this season

    4. the fans expect d'agostino style performances from
melo n they are never going to get it. melo is not
pirlo, veron or any other reincarnation of the
    deep-lying playmaker.melo is a ball-busting midfield
general who takes no prisoners and is best-suited
to breaking up opposition play and laying-off the
ball to a regista.yes he is capable of the
occassional cross-field/raking pass, but it is not
his forte. while it is not impossible that he may yet
become the regista-type, it will not happen in his
first 7/8 months in that position.

    5. we have not seen the best of melo bcuz we have'nt
used him in his optimal position (ditto for diego)
and until we get a manager who understands the kind
of player he is and sets up his midfield to
complement that personality he will continue to look
like shite and his stock at juve will continue to
    plummet

    HOWEVER

    1. swearing & cursing at the fans in a debut season
where you have largely underwhelmed is a no-no

    2. melo committed hara-kiri and the fans are only right
    to demand an apology

    3. melo has apologised and that should be the end of it
... talk of punitive benching/banishment to the
primavera/a summer fire-sale to the highest bidder is
uncalled for bcuz juve is not a god that cannot
be appeased ... the kid has said he's sorry and
    we should move on

    4. if the management decide that further disciplinary
measures are neccessary then so be it ... but
melo should not be kicked out of the club on account
    of this incident

He erred....He apologized... We move on...That's the
    way of life ...
  • M
Well, at least the EPL bigots can maybe keep quiet for once. I get tired of seeing the Serie A getting dissed so at least they'll shut up now that we beat Fulham and Inter eliminated Chelsea.
  • Jorid
dweb: Lol, not surprised really. Especially since Juve is the only Italian team left in Europe, just like inter is the only Argentine team left in Europe.
  • dweb
dont know if anyone posted this here yet, but figured my fellow juventini would appreciate it. legro was speaking to the media today about the tie w fulham and said this, "Perhaps we will be the Italian team that gives Calcio satisfaction in Europe."
    gotta love the inter hate!
  • Marco
what's amazing is that no matter how rubbish this melo is, I bet he'll be stellar at the world cup for brazil.
  • agiamba
Lastly- I was against Melo's signing from the get go, but even I never expected it to go as disastrously as it's been. His performances have been rubbish enough, and now he sets out with a can of gasoline and a Zippo to burn any bridges with the Juve tifosi.

Maybe he's really a Viola spy at heart- try and take us out of the race for 4th, waste a boatload of money, send two solid players over to Firenze...seems to be working.
  • agiamba
And he did a human thing, i.e. his effed up. He acknowledged this and he apologized. So why are we (and I’ll assume that we’re all humans as well) acting like we’ve never effed up?

He effed up spectacularly. It'd be one thing to put your finger to your mouth, it's entirely another to say "vaffanculo" twice, and yell "state zitti." Even JZ has never done that, and God knows the tifosi have had it in him since his Roma days.

Two other notes- I don't find his apology entirely sufficient, and secondly, we are all human and we do make mistakes. However, not all of us make 2.6million euros either. I am irritated (and not surprised) that the management has not punished him AT ALL. A month on the bench and a massive fine should have been the start.
  • agiamba
two words jorid: FELIPE MELO!!!!!!! But in all seriousness, I want a european supercup match in august between you guys and us, so please take care of fulham plus the europa league is pretty much the only thing you guys can actually win now, I hope you guys kick some german ass along the way to the final, but just win the Europa league, a team of your prestige and reputation cannot keep going without trophies every year, lest you become like Arsenal or Liverpool.

Bold added for emphasis. Did this quote make anyone elses head explode? On one hand, there's the "team of prestige" and "blah, win it for Italy!" and then previously above, a big fuck you HAHA MACCARONE = TEH BEST.

LOL inter beats chelsea twice no big deal, juve loses to chelsea and then ties them at home = JUVENTUS FUORI CON L’ONORE!!!!

In other news, Manchester United demolished Fulham 3-0. Different teams have different expectations of them. The 05-06 06-07 Scudetto champions have vastly different expectations for the 08-09 Champions League run then, yknow, the champions of Serie B. I don't mind we went out to Chelsea- they were a better team with more experience, but we fought hard.
  • Gaetano
    Micky its past your bedtime.

You guys had a good game today. Enjoy the win.

nnahoj...we never really liked him in the first place and he is overrated.

as far as i can remember, the majority of the juventini on this blog wanted d'agostino.
  • Jose
I for one am not too sad Inter won. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't care if they lost and got eliminated either. I just think this way they might loose more ground to Milan in the scudetto race. I don't think this Inter can or will win the Champions League, they might bump into Manchester or Barcelona soon and then it will be over, I just hope by then, Milan will have a few points cushion and take the scudetto with them.
  • Jorid
Thanks for your dedication honey buns. You didn't have to prove once again that we own your mind. I'd like to offer a big Fuck You to you and all the other delusional morons who support Inter.

"I identified Melo’s temperment as a key problem when we first signed him, I said he was a world-class douchebag, and he’s proving to be so, exceptionally."

Like I said, there's no excuses for what he did. But my problem is that everyone is getting on their moral high horse and calling his apology bullshit etc. I'm sorry, but the guy is human. And he did a human thing, i.e. his effed up. He acknowledged this and he apologized. So why are we (and I'll assume that we're all humans as well) acting like we've never effed up?

What he did was wrong, it was disgraceful etc etc. But people tend to do that from time to time. Get over it, and get over yourselves!
  • agiamba
r him. I’m sure that we are all aware that players don’t set their own transfer fees. That’s between the clubs. So please don’t make that an issue.

That is an issue, though. Melo will always have higher expectations than say, Marchisio or Poulsen when they first arrived.

Given his volatility, it was always going to happen.

And that is completely unacceptable. I identified Melo's temperment as a key problem when we first signed him, I said he was a world-class douchebag, and he's proving to be so, exceptionally.
  • I am not here to troll
Um juventini you should know that this chelsea victory will give us interisti a sense of invincibility, cuz if we can beat chelsea TWICE home and away then whats to stop us from beating the rest of you, we just knocked out a team expected to get all the way to the final in madrid and win it. I dedicate this victory to all the juventini on youtube who have been ridiculing us for the past three years every single time we have been eliminated, most ironic thing was is that unlike the bilanisti they had no right to do so since they had never done better than us in those three years, those videos that said "Non vincerete mai la champions league" or "Io esco sempre agli ottavi", can officially suck it. The best thing that has happened during these past few days is the fact that you guys ridiculed us for losing 3-1 to catania and then you go out and give up a 3 goal lead, once again Massimo Maccarone is the most underrated italian striker ever!!!
  • Sofia
I simply cannot accept his apology because in my opinion, what he did was a disgrace to Juventus and to Italian football. Like I said, I understand that he was jeered, but as you said so was Grygera, but he did not yell profanities. We do not need players like Melo who are nothing more than a liability. The way he plays is not good enough to warrant his temper acceptable. Again, as I stated before, if he was a decent player and didn't deserve the jeers then this would not be as great an issue. A goal or two in his pocket does not mean that he was amazing. As I recall, Chiellini has more goals to his name and he plays further away from the opposing goal. Regardless, I refuse to accept his apology because to me, it was not sincere and it does not make up for his actions. You can accept his apology if you so choose, that is not my business, however, for me to accept his apology would be going against my own principles. Melo is not worth that.
