AVANTI RAGAZZI!!! The Serie A Prospect Handbook
By: gianfranco z | August 23rd, 2007
Without further adieu here is my Prospect Handbook for the 2007-2008 season. Now I’ve compiled two lists of Foreign and Italian prospects who are on Serie A rosters as I write this. But things can change, players can be sold, loaned, Francesco Coco may be cured of herpes, I mean a lot can happen with youngsters. Here’s how it works, players are divided into their respective positions and I just list them in a very complex calculated formula (not realy). Its 50% celing (potential, projection) and 50% progress (what they have accomplished already). Of course there will be more to disagree with me then to agree with me, but in all honestly everyone knows we can debate stuff like this until the cows come home. At the end I will rank the top clubs and shed some insight. Only rule is players have to be younger then 25 years of age, and I’ll tell you right now Fabio Quagliarella is not on this list as I consider him to already have shed the “prospect” status along with Giorgio Chiellini since they both have featured for the full national team. Aquilani yes I know he has been on the full national team but after missing most of last season I kept him on this list, but as we all know, in short time he will shed prospect status and be a full fledged star. There are other withdrawals from the list as I will note, mostly because this is for STRICTLY PLAYERS on SERIE A ROSTERS, so dont freak out with Giuseppe Rossi is not on there.

i don’t think anyone will argue with you having fiorentina and juve 1-2.

thanks Chris, the top five is pretty set, Fiorentina undoubtably #1, Juve #2 pretty much set in stone but then I guess Roma, Parma, and Udinese can be interchangeable in the top 5, and then the rest of the top 10 is fair, I think the only teams being ranked too high that people can make a case for are Atalanta and Cagliari, but Atalanta has a lot of talent and prospects that are on loan right now, as they always do and fly under the radar.

Anthony Vanden Borre (Fiorentina, Belgium) 19 isn’t a defender, hes a defensive central midfielder, or at least thats where he played for belgium at the UEFA U21 championships this summer.

Other Gianfranco, I have to agree with your Juve Fiorentina top two. I feel though that Fioren will make more use of the talent, while Juve will sell them to get more experienced players when they hit Champions League, what do you think? By the way total low blow on Coco.

Gianfranco Rossonero, definitely a valid point on Juve, but I feel they are heading in a new direction. Obviously it is always win now mentality with Juve like the other big clubs, but this new era I feel many of the youngsters will be held onto unless an absolute firecracker of a deal comes along. Out of their prospects there are about 4 untouchables, but there are so many of them now of course some will have to be dealt, I mean Fiorentina got rid of Bojinov and he’s no slouch, but this influx of young talent is amazing all over Italy

Yea I feel bad now about the Coco crack, I wish him the best and I truly hope he can free himself from that Inter hell he has been rotting in, but we all know what a ladies man he is.
