Abandon Ship- This Boat is Sinking

This season is going down. Fast. Full review after the jump.

The ironic thing about this game is, more or less what Ferrara said- unlike the Bordeaux disaster, we didn’t play all that terribly, yet still lost 2-0. That doesn’t change the fact that today was still, an utter disappointment. Losing 2-0 twice in a week is not something we’re accustomed to, yet I today make an appeal of patience to all the Juventini. It’s not easy to be a sports fan and be patient. Many coaches are prematurely sacked, though sometimes, change is long overdue. (Buffalo Bills) Today was a soul-crushing loss that put us in 3rd and 8 points behind Inter, but I argue to give Ferrara time with the team.

ITALY SOCCER SERIE A

We really didn’t play that badly, though, except for a few key players. Amauri needs to be benched, I don’t care if Chimenti is starting up top, I am sick of seeing him whine at midfielders for the ball, and miss every goddamn chance he gets, after which there is more whining and shaking of his hair. Give Immobile a chance up top, I don’t care who but as a friend on Facebook said, I am now ABA, anyone-but-Amauri. I’m annoyed with him, but the foul on him in the box was a DEFINITE penalty that could have changed the balance of the game.

I can, however, sort of see why he gets a start, given all our other forwards are out. The same cannot be said for Molinaro. Why on earth is Ferrara giving him chances? I think it was pretty clear earlier in the season that Ferrara told Molinaro he was 3rd-choice, and time and time again, he’s proved why he is. Why the hell didn’t Grosso or De Ceglie start in his position?

59029903

And lastly, while I’m complaining about squad selections, Cannavaro was utter garbage today. Too slow, he was caught out of position several times and generally roasted by Cagliari’s pacey attack. What would everyone be saying if that was Legrottaglie? Probably that he’s rubbish, not up to Juve quality, and “fuck Legrottaglie” over and over. Instead, with Cannavaro, we figure he just had an off game. I’m not saying Cannavaro is a terrible player, one game doesn’t mean anything, but it’s time to stop having the double standards we do, because one player has a glorious past and the other…not so much.

Did Ferrara get it right today? Not entirely, but there’s not that often when a coach will nail the starting XI every game. Did we deserve to win? No. But, there are three things we knew before the season, and they are worth keeping in mind in these crappy times.

#1- It takes a while to master a formation. Ferrara said he wanted to play like Barca, which was probably a Zenga-style impossible promise, but Barca has been playing like that for decades. We have been playing whatever formation we are for 2-3 months, at best. It doesn’t help when your midfield and strikeforce are decimated by injuries. Figure at least a season to develop a strong new formation identity.
#2- The Moggi Rule: Never sign more than 2 new players for your starting XI. This largely applies to elite teams that are looking to refresh, more than restart, and it goes along with point #1 that it is tough to integrate these players into a new team. We have 5 new transfers who are frequently starting. For players like Cannavaro, Grosso, and Melo, they should be able to modify their game fairly quickly, 2-3 months. For foreign transfers, like Diego and Caceres, who are dealing with issues like a new league, a new language, etc, 4-5 months at the minimum.
#3- We all knew that going with a new coach would be bumpy. Personally, I wanted Gasparini at our helm, but I am satisfied with giving Ferrara a chance. It is not going to be easy, but he has already shown plenty of promise- willingness to change formation, willingness to try new things, commitment to squad rotation, willingness to own up to mistakes. These are 4 things Ranieri didn’t have. The tactics, and ability to read a game will come with time. With a new, inexperienced coach, figure at least a season. I’m with Ferrara till May, unless he puts us bottom half of the table.

SOCCER-ITALY/

Like I said, we knew these 3 things this summer, and I think all of you would have agreed. Our positive starts against Roma, Lazio, Chievo, etc, were an aberration that many of us thought were real. Now, it seems it was just a product of the enthusiasm in the squad. This fooled us, though, into thinking it would be an easy ride this season. Given Inter’s position, their squad depth, and the experience of the MoaningHoe, we were always underdogs, even if we believed at the start of the season we were equal.

I understand everyone’s disappointment, but I think the above points are very much valid and we need to have patience.

P.s.- We need to sign Caceres. I really like this kid. Maybe in exchange we can offer Amauri?

P.p.s- This post was sort of meant to cheer you up, but having re-read it, I don’t think it did the trick. Chin up, Juventini, there are better days ahead.

Alessio, you put a picture of the Titanic telling everyone its time to abandon ship and that does not indicate the level of your support deep down? A real fan does not do that. Standing by your team because they were sent down because of scandal is hardly comparable. You circled the wagons in protest of how the team was treated by those in power not because of their play. When a team plays bad and how the fans react is what says alot about the fan. Your post is an insult to any real Juve fan.

Also, I think 'Immobile' is hands-down the most RIDICULOUS name I've ever seen for a footballer... :D
  • Vinod
The thing I always thought about Amauri was that he looked like a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type striker, to the letter. He's got some samba skill, but not a lot. He's got decent technique, but not the best. He's got height and a good physique, but he's not the strongest player. He can shoot ok, but not as well as a great striker should be able to. In sum, good, not great, certainly not the type that should be starting for y'all. I don't rate Iaquinta's ability all that highly either, although he works like a full-blooded ox. The only truly world-class strikers you have, IMO, are Alex and Trez, but for various reasons they haven't seen enough of the field.

I still think once your midfield clicks, its going to become the strongest in Serie A, and a good shout for the claim in Europe two. But like alessio preaches, your board (and fans) need to show some patience for the results to come. 3 years from now, if you still have the same crop of midfielders, its going to be an unbelievable one.

"I’m with Ferrara till May, unless he puts us bottom half of the table." Alessio are you serious? I mean we have played a couple of great game under this guy (Sampdoria and Roma) the rest of them somehow we have played miserable or only just got a result. Fuck UEFA Cup, we have to make the Champions league, and the way AC Milan and Fiorentina are playing compared to what we are doing it dosent look like we will be in the UCL next year.

On the game, fuck Amauri let him go, when he dosent get the ball or dosent get a foul payed to him, he whines to his players or the fuckin ref, WHY THE FUCKIN DOSENT GO GET THE BALL INSTEAD!

Play Immobile, start him he will im sure play with determination and grit, and i dont care if it is against Inter.

Caceras is an absolutle fuckkin beast, and is a qucik son of gun. But for 11 mill (his buyout clause), we can surely get another right back.

Is it just me or is Diego playing like utter crap? He gets the ball and then gives of a fuckin long ball or he turns it over, wasnt he bought here to add creativity and dance around his opponents, IS HE FUCKIN DOING THAT!

Next week Inter , we loose and it is game, set and match, even if it isint already. If Ciro looses/draws agasint any of Bayern,Inter and Bari, get him out of here, the man dosent seem liek he has any fuckin idea what he doing, and his subs, for fucks sake, are aas bad if not worse than Ranieri.

Pardon my swaering it's just showing how bloody pissed of i am.

    In Moggi we trust.

Luciano Moggi 2, The Revenge of the Fallen......

Mo, the problem with sacking a coach midterm is it rarely yields results. Hiddink did well, but he's an aberration and look what happened? Chelsea finished without silverware. Woohoo. Look at clubs with managerial instability- Inter (historically), Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Chelsea is recent years. What's the common theme? Zero tituli.

Besides, who are we doing to hire now? We can't hire Spalletti, Gasparini, Conte, the 3 heavily linked to our bench in the summer. Some of the names out there are hilarious. Donadoni? Mancini? Give me a break. Don't be fickle...we need to give our trust to Ferrara and evaluate him at the end of the season.
  • agiamba
None of us are ditching Juve, Ralph. We stood with our club when it looked like we might be going to Serie C, and we will stay with La Vecchia Signora whether we finish in 1st or 10th.

But yeah, given the expectations of the summer, it's not surprising to see us disappointed.
  • Ralph
a big teams fans whining because they are still in 3rd and have had a few bad games? The real fans in Serie A are the those of the smaller teams. Juve fans just show your colors when it is convenient. Sad sack of fans you are.

This past week had me feeling like crap... Reading this post didn't really cheer me up as you had planned Alession... Reading Johonna's comment just destroyed me!
    I wanna cry

    Bring Back Moggi
  • Mo
Off with ferrara's head and bring in hiddink! All valid points alessio but with our current squad Ferrara should have been able to muster a win. Everything in our game play was bad, organization, tactics, subs, starting line up etc. There is a definite problem which both Buffon and Diego pointed out earlier but it seems Ferrara is still clueless. Whats wrong with sacking a coach when the results don't come? Hidink came into Chelsea and worked his magic ( I hope he comes in and does the same for us). And when we do win we have looked extremely ugly and shaky (don't let the score line fool you i.e. Atalanta). To top it all of Ferrara comes along and says we weren't too bad and we deserve to win??? Let's call a spade a spade and admit we need a new coach that can bring out the best from our players.

I couldn't catch the game since I was asleep. When I woke up and saw the result, I felt like puking. This post did cheer me up.

    Jorid,

    Please Ignore PAT.

The award for "Comment of the day reflecting the crushing feeling of my soul" goes to ooBia.

Jorid, I'm optimistic and I think we can beat Bayern, but on current form...not Inter. Question is...if you had to chose one or the other, which would it be? -11 and CL, or -5 and Europa league?
  • ooBia
    :(
  • Jorid
And LOL @ PAT: So you're coming back huh? You think you will finally qualify for the Champions this time? Or maybe win your fourth Serie A? Delusional fuck.
  • Man, Alessio, I came over to be all gloaty but after reading your post I just want to give you all a cup of hot cocoa and a cookie. :)

I never did see what everyone saw in Amauri. I think Iaquinta is much better.
  • Jorid
georg: What if we win against both of these teams? Sure we're not performing well at the moment and this has been a bad week, however calling the results of 2 matches that are yet to be played ahead of time is premature imo. Our CL form has been inconsistent, but Bayern fucking sucks for having some of the players that they do. They haven't impressed in any competitions either. The game against Inter on the other hand is a special game, possibly the most important one of the season, and I think the players will approach it with a different mentality. Also, these are both home games, don't forget that.
  • Jorid
1987: Quite frankly, sacking Ciro right now or during the winter break sounds stupid to me. As Ale also mentioned, this team has not fully gelled together yet under the new tactic, you have new signings from another league who are still getting used to playing and living in Italy. The last thing that all of the players need is for the manager to be changed. It will only disrupt the locker room harmony even more, confuse the shit out of the team and create greater troubles. Yes Ciro is inexperienced and he has made a few questionable tactical moves during games throughout the season, however he's doing fairly well in his first managerial duty. Give him some more time.
  • Joe
caceres was the best player today imo
  • georg
quite agree on everything in the article, the only sensefull thing I can add is still: fuck'm, fuck'm all!.

i wont be seeying the next 2 games. imagine, just imagine , inter comes winning, and bayrn defeat us, even if it was by chance, i simply would not survive that.seeying our current form, there is simply no reason to be optimistic or confident for those 2 extreme difficult games!

its very hard to be a juvefan this year...
  • PAT
GRAZIE ROMA WHERE COMING BACK ALESSIO U CAN FUCK MOGGI AND SO CAN ALL JUVE NO MOGGI NO JUVE!!
  • o_man
Also,Ciro said that Diego didn't listen to instructions.

    Finally...Amauri
Forget the fact that I have always said he is shitty since last year and overrated,he needs to be benched. All players pass through a bad phase and when that happens it usually requires coaches to bench them and man manage them.We have been doing the exact opposite and playing every game. You might argue we don't have replacements but I am 100% sure Immobile won't make us feel any different
  • Jorid
Lol Ale, it's funny you mention the Bills. If only Marshawn Lynch would start performing like last season, then my fantasy team would be MUCH better lol. I've said it before that I'm not a huge fan of Legro, but boy was I begging for him to be playing instead of Canna. Even though it sounds weird: I would have loved a defense of Chiello-Legro-Caceres-Grygera. On paper sounds terrifying but would have probably done better than what we were playing with today.
  • o_man
Am I the only one who thinks Sissoko is disrupting our play?He gets in the way of everyone and then dives and whines and makes an ugly face and by the time all this is done, the other team would have already been attacking us leaving Poulsen/Melo with the defense ON THEIR OWN
  • agiamba
Funny, I just made that comment on Facebook. Too far out, and if he doesn't put any air on it, he's only going to beat Campagnolo and maybe Rubinho.
  • Juve Bob
Looking at the highlights, it seems that Diego thinks he can carry this team alone. He has to stop trying shots from outside the box and try to pass the ball in. He had some very weak shots saved where a through ball would have been more dangerous. He needs to learn to do what's best for the team and not go for personal glory.
  • agiamba
Ferrara's comments on the game, I think he's pretty much spot on.

"After the defeat in Bordeaux I was angry with my players," said Ferrara. "Today I am still angry, but not with them, because in the second half they did everything they could to equalise and even win. In the first half there weren't any real risks and we were only threatened by that stunning goal scored by Nene'. After the break Cagliari were pinned back into their own box, but the result still says 2-0. This defeat stings because we played good football and deserved a point, so we go home empty-handed and very annoyed."

"We had a lot of chances today and Federico Marchetti did very well to deny Del Piero and Diego, while our best opportunity was that penalty incident. It was a clear foul on Amauri, yet all we got out of it was a yellow card for dissent. In my eyes that was a penalty, we haven't received a spot-kick for seven months. Hopefully at least next week we'll get a less obvious decision against Inter.

I have always said up until now we deserved all our defeats, but that was not the case today and it has made me really cross."
