A Summer Revolution?

By: agiamba | February 11th, 2010

The Gazzetta had a report today, saying that Bettega and co. are planning a summer revolution of the squad, and named 11 players who would certainly stay, and suggested others would get the chop. This post is a review of the Gazzetta’s selection and some of my input on a summer revival.

Confirmed to Stay: The Gazzetta says Buffon, Chiellini, Sissoko, Marchisio, Diego are seen as long-term anchors of the club, and therefore will be staying. Players like Poulsen, Grygera, Salihamidzic, De Ceglie have supposedly impressed with their determination and professionalism and will remain. Legrottaglie, despite his age, will remain as he has been in relatively good form and is at worst, a capable reserve as a center-back. There is no mention of Iaquinta, but the team has reiterated in the past that they believe in Vincenzo, and I agree. And of course Del Piero will be along forever, as the Gazzetta says, “only he can decide to pack his bags.”

In Limbo: Caceres and Candreva are in the same position, as their future with the club depends on negotiations. The management likes both of them, but does not want to pay 11million euros for Caceres or 8.5million for co-ownership of Candreva. Felipe Melo’s position depends on three things- how much we could sell him for, if his play improves over the next few months, and ultimately, if he’s in the plans of the new coach. The management is not impressed with his indiscipline or his performances. Giovinco it depends on him…as the Gazzetta says, he must decide whether to risk “another year at a club that has not proved to believe in him.”

Leaving Turin: The Gazzetta suggests Cannavaro’s option for a 2nd year will not be exercised, and Grosso has ultimately been a flop and will be offloaded. Paolucci, Tiago, and Molinaro will be loaned out or sold. Amauri will be the first to be offloaded, and the management will try and get the most for him. The last question is Zebina, Camoranesi, and Trezeguet, each 32 years old, each with a large contract that expires in 2011. Zebina doesn’t deserve to be in the category with the other two, he needs to be booted out in 2006. Camoranesi and Trezeguet, the paper says, will not have their contracts extended in 2011 and so, perhaps the management will cash in on them before the contracts expire.

In general, I agree with much of this Football-Italia blog. Below is the full squad, and how I would run things. One note about it- sure, it’s fantacalcio, but so is the Gazzetta article. The idea that we could completely overhaul our squad in a summer is unlikely at best.

PORTIERI:
Buffon- Untouchable. The only reason to sell him would be to get a lot of money, which we don’t need. Staying.
Manninger- His contract ends in 2011, but he’s been a very capable reserve and I don’t see why he should leave. Staying.
Chimenti- Promote Kirev to 3rd-place keeper, or let Chimenti stay on the bench. I’m sure his wages are extremely low, so it really doesn’t matter. In Limbo.

59376755
Oops.

DIFENSORI:
Caceres- You all know I like this kid, and I think we haven’t even seen his full potential. Negotiate it down to 8million or so, given that Barcelona and Guardiola don’t even seem to want him. Staying.
Cannavaro- We swapped Olof Mellberg for Cannavaro? I think they are on equal level, Mellberg is 4 years younger, and he doesn’t come with Cannavaro’s baggage. Leaving Turin.
Chiellini- Probably even ahead of Buffon, he is the first player to stay in Turin. (after Alex, of course) Staying.
De Ceglie- I like his versatility, whether playing as a center-midfielder, a winger, or a fullback, and I think he can be a very good fullback. He has pace, he has crossing ability, his defense is at least at the level of Grosso’s, and it can improve. He needs to be given plenty of playing time. Staying.
Grosso- He’s certainly been a flop, and it’s hard to believe, but he sometimes makes me wish for Molinaro back. If we can offload him for the same amount we paid for him, do it. Leaving Turin.
Grygera- Like the Gazzetta says, I like his professionalism and his demeanor. He can play any position in defense, and he’s not that old. Staying.
Legrottaglie- SKY’s man-of-the-match against Livorno, he’s proven this season that despite being replaced by Cannavaro, he’s still determined. Capable, and age doesn’t seem to be an issue, pace has never been his key attribute, but, a capable reserve at worst. Staying.
Zebina- I am biased as hell against Zebina, but I don’t see any reason why he should stay. He’s on a high salary, he’s been perennially injured the last 2-3 seasons, he’s mediocre, and he’s 32 years old. It was a huge mistake to offer him a contract extension in 2007. Leaving Turin.

59254844
So many games, he’s completely clueless.

CENTROCAMPISTI:
Candreva- Valuing him at 17million is high. He’s only been here for a month, so it’s too early to judge him, but I like what I’ve seen thus far. In Limbo.
Camoranesi- The Gazzetta suggests he will be offloaded because of his high salary, his age, and his injury-prone status. Given this, and the fact he has 1 year on his contract, I don’t see us getting more than 4million euros, and that is not worth it for his importance to the team. Are we better off with the 2.5million euros from Cristiano Zanetti? Or would it have been better let his contract run out. Staying.
Diego- I disagree with most of the criticism he’s received this year, and despite a lack of support in midfield and a player as piss-poor as Amauri up top, he’s played well. Not what we were hoping, but pretty well. Better players around him will bring out his talent. Staying.
Giovinco- I agree with the Gazzetta, he needs to consider his future. If the new manager doesn’t demonstrate faith in him, he should leave for his own sake. Hopefully someday we’ll see him return. In Limbo.
Marchisio- No uncertainties for Marchisio, who is one of our best midfielders despite his young age. A model for the Primavera players. Staying.
Melo- I didn’t like his signing to begin with. Even before we were linked with Melo, I said this about the D’Agostino deal collapsing. “D’Agostino deal looks like it’s dead…Shame, now Secco is probably going to pick up yet another mediocre DM.” If we can recoup a significant amount of his investment, boot his ass out the door. In Limbo.
Poulsen- The Gazzetta says his performances this season have won over some in the management, along with his professional demeanor. The latter I appreciate, the former I am not decided yet. He’s played better this season than in past, but is it good enough to stay? For me, he’s a “wait-and-see” for the rest of the season. In Limbo.
Salihamidzic- Ditto to the Gazzetta article. His wages are pretty low, he’s a decent utility player, and I like the guys spirit. His contract ends in 2011 and won’t be renewed, but I’m down with one more year of Brazzo. Staying.
Sissoko- If only he wasn’t so injury-prone, he could develop into a world-class player. That said, he’s a solid player and pretty young. No doubt he’ll be around. Staying.

16963_1388109181471_1194315532_31155754_1111800_n
He got marked out of the game by “Him.” Seriously.

ATTACCANTI:
Paolucci- Immobile will replace him as the “young talent in the squad that inexplicably never sees any playing time” so he’ll likely go out on loan. I feel bad for him, what a fucking dumb move to recall him for one game. Leaving Turin.
Amauri- I don’t have to explain. Send him back to Palermo. Leaving Turin.
Alessandro Del Piero- “Only he decides when to pack his bags.” Indeed, Gazzetta. Staying.
Trezeguet- Along with Camoranesi, he’s the other “big question.” He doesn’t quite have the importance that Camo does to the squad, but he’s not really injury-plagued like Camo either. I see no reason to sell him for a few million euros, particularly when he’s our best forward this season. He’s the only one who really seems like he’s going to score when he plays. Staying.
Iaquinta- Is there any doubt about Vincenzo’s commitment to our club? No. The man produces goals, and that’s his job. Staying.

In sum-
Staying: Buffon, Manninger, Caceres, Chiellini, De Ceglie, Grygera, Legrottaglie.
In Limbo: Chimenti, Candreva, Melo, Poulsen
Getting the Boot: Cannavaro, Grosso, Molinaro, Zebina, Tiago, Almiron, Amauri, Paolucci

I hope to see this many more times…this year, and next season.

It’s Mardi Gras this weekend, so Roberto will be taking control of the ship. Sempre Juve!!

Nice stuff about the primavera. At least one of our teams knows how to win.

Ochocinco is such a stupid douchebag.

    http://www.juventus.com/site/i...
Primavera beat Atalanta's 2-0 in the semifinal, goals from Immobile and Yago. They'll meet Empoli in the final, who beat the Serie D group on penalties.

Completely off-topic: I guess douchebags like to hang out together:

    http://twitpic.com/12lnm8

    Chad 8-5 and The Matrix.
  • Robee
And by then, he'll be gone... We should contact some coaches now. Prandelli or Gasperini, and if not interested, immediately switch our attention to someone else.

Anyway: Camo, Brazzo and Marchisio are selected for tomorrow's game!!
  • j
it's a tough choice, hiddink is over-rated, but you can't denied he did some good stuff with chelsea, holland, russia (euro 2008), PSV, he could command the dressing room like capello

gasperini and prandelli are also great, but then with secco at the juve office, they probably can't get the players they want
  • bianconeri
I doubt we would act on Hiddink now. Most likely we would go after Gasperini or Prandelli and when we fail we would go for Hiddink.
  • Robee
Hiddink said in a Dutch Newspaper that he won't be coaching Russia anymore... His contract ends this summer and he will not extend it. Hmmm, we should make a choice, but do it fast...
  • Alessio, you left out Giovinco, Camo, Diego, Marchisio, Salihamidzic, Sissoko, Del Piero, Trezeguet and Iaquinta in your summed up list.

I agree with your list. And I think certain players staying depends a lot on the new coach who comes in. If Prandelli is brought in for instance, then they'll definitely hang on to Melo since Prandelli was the one that launched him in the first place. Juve wouldn't be able to recoup the full amount they paid for him anyway, so I'd keep him at least another season. And I just pray that Giovinco plays more consistently in these next coming months...and for more than just 5 minutes. Maybe they'll switch back to the 4-2-3-1 when Camo is fit. I don't really think that formation is necessarily the answer, but at least Gio will play.
  • Gaetano
The top 4 places are breaking away from us very quickly. Unless we win 5 consecutive games, i don t think we ll have a chance.

How does Secco still have a job? Why didn't they just fire him and put Bettega in his place. They pretty much made up a job title for Bettega that means "Secco's babysitter". This is starting to become very ridiculous. If they fail to keep Giovinco that would be their biggest mistake. Anyone who has any confidence in our management right now will lose it completely the day they let Gio go.
  • Justin
Agree with you,j. The first person that really should go out is Secco - maybe not out of the management but maybe just revoke his powers over transfers.

Defense should be the number one priority. Criscito will be enough for LB with De Ceglie as sub. I have no idea who Ranocchia is but I was thinking more of Kjaer for CB. Can you give us info about how Ranocchia plays? But I really don't know how willing Palermo be in selling him.
  • j
secco should just go, terrible director of football
  • agiamba
Great rumor of the day- Vargas as our left-back.
Problem #1- Corvino will demand Giovinco, Buffon, and 15million for him. And Secco will oblige him.
Problem #2- His defense is so shitty, Prandelli abandoned trying to play him as a left-back and moved him to winger.
Problem #3- We have De Ceglie and Criscito in-house.
  • nico
    hi guys, new blogger.

its seems so simple to me that we should play 4-2-3-1. Literally the only games ive thought juve played like a championship contending team were with that formation (and im including the roma and inter games). in this formation no-ones out of position at all.
also it wouldnt require a huge overhaul at all. In fact, grosso and even amauri even played well in those games, so really the only purchases i would make would be to buy ranocchia/bonucci/kjaer, and motta (im not a huge caceres fan). sell amauri- hes garbage

    --------------buffon------------
    -------ranocchia---chiello-------
    motta------------------------grosso
    -----------sissoko---melo---------
    camoranesi---diego-------giovinco--
    ------------iaquinta---------------

im expecting some pro- marhisio responses, but he could play pretty much anywhere in this midfield. and could easily replace melo.
  • j
been busy with stuff, but can finally take a rest now, god juve is a horror, i just don't think about the team, which has work well

anyway, no offence, but i find all these talks about our ideal transfers pointless, our management is screwed, we can NEVER achieve anything with those fools at the helm
  • Sam
If the day comes when Giovinco leaves, that will well and truly be the end of my life.
  • rhaaj
I agree with everyone here that money should go to defense. For mid & offense, spend whatever comes out of the sale of melo & amauri, plus may be a little more.

I agree 100% with alessio on ribery. If anything, I would like to see hamsik or david silva in turin, not ribery. Also, I want to see nedved back at the club in some capacity this summer.
  • Alastair
I still think the best summer acquisition for us would be Cesare Prandelli.
  • Juergen
If it's necessary I would like to see the management pay one or two million more for Caceres instead of letting him go. It's a special situation with this guy: not only do we know his talent (as you know the talent of potential new players from other clubs), but we've also seen how determined he is, how he fits to the club and what he's able to do for us.
  • marco
look at how many players are over 30 in the squad, think that will impact on decisions:
    http://www.football-italia.net...
  • Alastair
"20mil in 3 mercatos, and 7mil in the last two. Unacceptable."

And half of that was on Andrade alone. Jesus Christ.
  • Rinaldo
Giovinco leaving Juventus would be among the greatest tragedies I would experience as a Juve fan. It might be the best thing for him, and for football in general, but for me, as a selfish Juve fan, it would suck b*lls.
  • It's a bit early to be making these kinds of assessments. Like you said alessio it's fantacalcio, but for the sake of it based on the current situation I agree with your picks.

I will add we should keep Candreva if his cost isn't too exorbitant. I think he's a guy that will do his job weel, and someone who has enough motivation from wearing the shirt that he can step it up in big games. So far he hasn't really blown us away, but then again name a midfielder who has done that this season?

100% on the Paolucci comment. That was the last dumb move of the Ferrara-Blanc collaboration.

As for the Amauri-Knezevic picture, it speaks for itself. How delightfully and painfully à propos.
  • Alessio I agree with the most of yours but here's my puny adds:
Grygera - should be leaving for sure, every time he plays, he stops the play, he never seem to have the will go forward, always passing back or lateral, and always stops the ball for 1-2 seconds.
Diego - I agree with Alessio, he's the player of the season in Juve squad, I can't really see the point of all the critics.
Giovinco - if he leaves, it will be the greatest mistake ever. You all know that if he leaves, he will never return, because if Gio gets up to Arsenal or Barca, his price will rise up to 50-70 millions. Should stay! Should believe. We believe!
Poulsen - definitely not good, the level of Melo, should leave.

If we were able to sign an attack minded coach then we could see a decent 4-2-3-1 with Giovinco and Candreva as wingers. Just thoughts...
  • Jorid
Our directors don't know shit from Shinola. They are utter fucking douchebags with 0 football knowledge.
TeamGREASE: Toulalan is 26, the best DM in France, regular for France’s NT, good physically, has good vision and great tackling. He’s what Tiago was supposed to be for us when we purchased him from Lyon, with the only difference that he’s a quality player and not a waste of money. Him, Momo and Marchisio together would easily form THE STRONGEST midfield in Serie A and one of the best in the world. Another quality of his, is that he’s a DM who has good technique, but knows when to keep it simple and effective with his passing.(Unlike Melo or Momo). He would cost us quite a bit, but if we could get him, it would be a great permanent investment.
I personally love Toulalan and think he's a quality player. If somehow Juve would sign him, he would be like a new Tacchinardi for us. He reminds me of Alessio in his play and role.
  • we don't even have enough defenders to field a team practice.
    w.t.f.
  • agiamba
I don't understand how everyone here knows our defense needs drastic investment, except the management. Since Calciopoli, we've signed the following:

    Summer 07
    Grygera (Free)
    Salihamidzic (Free)
    Andrade (10mil)
    Molinaro (3mil)

    Summer 08
    Mellberg (Free)
    De Ceglie (3.5mil)
    Knezevic (Loan)

    Summer 09
    Cannavaro (Free)
    Grosso (3.5mil)
    Caceres (Loan)

20mil in 3 mercatos, and 7mil in the last two. Unacceptable.
  • Defense is the biggest problem we have. I wish we still had the mediocre Melburg and the green Ariaudo, just so we could have a little bit of fkn cover.

Tell us more about Toulalan. I've never heard of him.
  • Jorid
Defense defense defense defense defense defense defense defense. I'll say this for the umpteenth time: Juve needs a minimum of 3 new defenders this summer. If we don't take care of this, forget even qualifying for the C.L in the next 5 years.
Rinaldo: Great minds think alike. Jeremy Toulalan is a fucking stud.
  • agiamba
I 100% veto Ribery. He's unhappy wherever he plays, he is perennially injured (when was the last time he played 20+ games) and would cost a lot of money. Money needs to go to defense, now.
  • Giro
If I was in charge of you management I would, Sell Amauri, Giovinco, Gross, Melo, Trez, Camo. I would even think of selling Diego if I culd get Ribery. Buy Kjaer/Rinocchia, Bonucci, Ribery, Luis Saurez, buy back Criscito, Bring back Palladino and as much as I hate to say this buy Cassani, hes better then Carces and would probably cost the same or alittle bit more. You guys would have hell of a team.

Dear god -- a thousand 13-year-olds on a thousand Photoshop-equipped computers couldn't have created a more hysterical Amauri photo than that one.

    Just came across this:

Juventus president Blanc in tax probe

    Reuters, Thursday February 11 2010
ROME, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Juventus president Jean-Claude Blanc and previous incumbent Giovanni Cobolli Gigli are being probed as part of an investigation into the Turin club's taxes.
The Serie A club said in a statement on Thursday that the move was standard practice for an investigation of this kind regarding possible irregularities in value added tax payments.
"The club states that the previous president, Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, and the current one, Jean-Claude Blanc, in January 2010 received an invitation to appear before the Turin Prosecutors' Department to illustrate their position regarding the hypothesis of tax offences over disputed VAT for the tax years 2005, 2006 and 2007," Juventus said.
"The club and their managers can declare that they have always observed the law and sporting regulations," Juve added in the statement posted on their website (www.juventus.com).
  • agiamba
Swap Ranocchia for Santacroce in your starting XI and I'm with you, Rinaldo. Actually, I wouldn't sign Santacroce at all, he's flat-lined over the last 2 years and he's too injury-prone.
  • Jose
I hope we pick a coach soon after the season is over so that he can plan who he wants on the squad. The major question this summer for me is whether we keep Giovinco or not. There is rumors that we might buy Vargas who will play where Giovinco would usually (left attacking mid) in a 4-2-3-1, in which case we should sell him. My ideal formation would be

    ----------------------Buffon-------------
    Caceres--Kjaer/Bounucci--Chiellini--Criscito
    ----------Sissoko------Marchisio--------
    Camo------------Diego----------Giovinco
    --------Iaquinta/Trez/Immobile--------

We have to buy a new CB and someone to replace Camo, we don't need Pazzini, or Vargas or Dzeko, let's give this kids some faith.
  • Rinaldo
Since we are doing Fantacalcio, this would the team I'd (kinda realistically?) aim for next season:

    -----------------------Buffon

    ----CACERES - SANTACROCE - Chiellini - CRISCITO

    -----------Marchisio - TOULALAN - Sissoko

    -------------------Diego - Giovinco

    ----------------------PAZZINI

Subs: Manninger; Grygera, RANOCCHIA, Legrottaglie, De Ceglie, Brazzo; Poulsen, Camoranesi, Marrone; CANDREVA, Camoranesi, Del Piero; Iaquinta, Trezeguet.

That's one sexy starting 11: a strong defense, attacking wingbacks, a midfield full of steel, and a three-pronged attack that would scare the world until near the end of this new decade. My pick for Santacroce is strongly based on the fact that he can also play at RB.
  • Preview will be up before Sunday's game yal. Go nuts alessio.
  • Mo
I think Melo is a really good player and would be a starter in any team he only needs to regain confidence and a capable coach to guide him. Other than that I agree with alessio. The question is who will be coming in?
  • I am unable to stop laughing at third pic.
