A Suffered Victory, but 3 Points
By: alessio | October 26th, 2009That was not a particularly enjoyable match to watch. 67% possession for Juve, and 1 shot on net. There were 18 shots total between the two teams, a telling statistic of a very, very sterile afternoon. But hey, three points is three points. Brief review after the jump-
The Good:
Gianluigi Buffon- Superman had nothing to do. Then was called into action following a nice team move from Siena and responded brilliantly. Then had nothing to do. That is the mark of a great goalkeeper, to stay completely attentive even when absolutely nothing, I repeat nothing, was going on. The commentators I was watching repeatedly made jokes about Buffon being able to put his feet up in a lawn chair, and then when there was a passback, they’d say “And now Buffon can go back to his chair.” Then Adrian Healy said “They should have charged Buffon admission for this game.”
Legrottaglie+Chiellini- The unstoppable wall of 2007-2009 that was broken up by Cannavaro made a brief reunion today, as Ferrara (wisely) decided to give Cannavaro a break. (Seriously, he’s 35. If Ranieri was coach, he’d be playing 180min every week, period) Legro hasn’t looked that great this season, having played irregularly and with the team saying “fuck you” and dropping him to the bench, but he played well today, and Chiellini was superb as usual. Siena couldn’t get passed the two.
Paolo De Ceglie- This is where I disagree most with Goal.com’s player ratings. First, it’s stupid to compare him to a fullback when he played most of the match as a midfielder. Second, I thought he was one of our better players on the pitch. His distribution wasn’t great, but he was one of the few midfielders who looked like he was doing something, hustling up and down and creating chances.
Ekdal- He looked very lively out there, along with Maccarone one of the few Siena players who did, and he’s only 20 years old. A full season with Siena will do him very good, I was impressed.
The Mediocre:
Grygera- The ultimate “meh” performance. Held his own defensively, didn’t contribute too much offensively, hooked for Caceres at the break.
Amauri- Thank you for scoring, but he still looks awful up front. Kind of ironic eh, as he started the season brilliantly, though sans goal and now he’s scoring despite looking totally static up front.
Poulsen- Not a bad game, not a great one either. I think with Poulsen we can see that he’s better when he’s not playing as a defensive midfielder, strange as it may be. When he’s given a bit more freedom to pass and move around, he plays a lot better, and he put in a few good passes/crosses yesterday. I’d still like to see this kind of fire in him though.
The Bad:
Molinaro- Defensively untroubled, as much of our team was, and on average position played farther up than Camoranesi. Had zero impact offensively yet again, and his passing was pretty crappy.
Trezeguet- He got in the way, he had few chances at all, and he didn’t look very predatory out there. Some might say this is proof of his decline, but I still think he’s got it, it takes more than 2-3 games to get back into form though.
Ferrara- Extremely harsh to put him in this category given we got the 3 points, but come on…why not play Giovinco?! He could have been played as a CM in that match given the dominant possession and the fact that Siena didn’t look like they wanted to win at all. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Buffon accidentally got some limoncello in his eye while sitting and watching the game
Other news/thoughts from this weekend:
-When asked whether he’d return to Juventus, Capello responded “Never say never.” I just vomited a little bit in my mouth.
-Player ratings for the match: Tuttosport, Goal.com, Datasport.it- Google Translate works pretty good here
-Did anyone else notice how advanced Chiellini was playing? He was frequently moving up the field, almost like a modern-day sweeper. I guess it was his frustration with the rest of the team- If they won’t do it, I will!
-Iaquinta has to have surgery on his meniscus, like Marchisio and similar to what Buffon will undergo. 30-40 days out, apparently he started feeling pain during training on Saturday.
-Fabio Grosso’s 2nd son was born today, Giacomo Grosso. Congratulations to him and his wife.
-Today’s training consisted of a light session for those who played yesterday (translated oddly by Juventus.com as “moisturizing”) normal training for those who didn’t play, and gym for Amauri, Sissoko, and Melo. The injured players did not take part today.
-Diego has a very irregular shaving routine. Has anyone else noticed this? Some days like Wednesday he’ll be scruffy. Then yesterday, clean shaven. Same earlier in the season against Chievo and then a week later Roma. It’s kinda funny.
Hope this article helped to brighten your Mondays a bit. If not, send comments/criticisms/suggestions to juventus [at] theoffside (dot) com, and remember- Sampdoria is only 2 days away. (Is that supposed to excite us, or terrify us?)

Firstly, i would have think that tomorrow is one of the more defining games of our brief 09-10 season. If we come out and put in a good showing against a team that is in-form then we could possibly really “start” our season and gather valuable momentum.
Secondly, Big implications for Ferrara tomorrow. I am very interested in seeing what lineup he goes to war with. Ivo – you were spot on your projected formation. I think maybe we will start conservative with Grygera in instead of Caceres(imo i would like Caceres to start) but i think we will play it close to vest. If he deviates from your projection i think he will start feeling the wrath of the tifosi, GIO IS A MUST!
3. Iaquina – i wish him the best. I am a very hard critic of his but that is warranted when you love the Azzuri and Juventus. But nonetheless i wish him a quick recovery. We can not possibly be content with ANOTHER draw, and we should come out ready to put our stamp on the season. FULL STOP.

I don’t really understand why Gio was rested, his game against Maccabi was like what, his first full 90mins in a month? Or maybe picked up a few knocks due to those ******** who kept tripping him.
I can understand Sissoko being rested cause he played two full matches against Fio and Maccabi.

If Cassano dices up the Azzurri D do you think Lippi will call him up?

To Calisi
I have thought of this as well… In a way if ferrara is that stubborn to not put on gio, camo and diego… then he gets what he deserves. WE should have all of fantasistas ready to go. It will still be a damn tough one but I think if we play like Ivo has listed, we will prevail. Sampdoria is weakest at the back so we may have some opportunities.Posted from

My preferred line-up, 4-2-3-1:
Buffon; Caceres, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Sissoko, Melo; Camoranesi, Diego, Giovinco; Amauri.
If a 4-3-1-2:
Buffon; Caceres, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Grosso; Camoranesi, Melo, De Ceglie; Diego; Amauri, Giovinco.
I think that’s making the most of the players that we have available.
As much as I want to go back to giving Ciro my 100% faith, the happenings over the past month have made that hard for me. I still like him – I mean he’s freaking Ciro Ferrara, a bloody legend! But I feel a bit like he’s in over his head. And that he’s taken the worst trait from Lippi – his stubbornness! No bueno.

Calisi, I have a secret hope that Lippi is just stringing Cassano along to keep him motivated and rational, and will call him up right before the World Cup. And that’s why I might prefer Grygera to Caceres starting, Caceres has shown real potential but the idea of Cassano playing against him frightens me a lot more than Grygera, and we know Cassano loves to drift out to the left and cut in.
And that he’s taken the worst trait from Lippi – his stubbornness! No bueno.
I think that’s an “off” criticism of him. Aside from Gio, he’s given PDC/Molinaro/Grosso a shot at LB, Caceres/Brazzo/Grygera/Zebina all at RB, he’s given Legro enough time to be happy with rotating Cannavaro, Poulsen and Tiago have been given chances again and largely done acceptably with them. He’s played a 4-3-1-2, a 4-2-3-1, and a 4-4-2. His subs have been off, I agree. But the main issue is simply our strikers are all in mediocre form, and short of running on the pitch and banging in a goal himself, there’s not much he can do about it. Look at the Maccabi game, plenty of creativity from the 4-2-3-1 with tons of chances but we still won off a set piece from a CB.
Ale, is the meniscus problems Marchisio, Buffon, and now Iaquinta have had the 2009-10 version of last year’s muscle strains?
Maybe so. I think the thigh strains were largely bad training and worse medical staff. This doesn’t seem like it could be related either, seems like more of a structural issue. Who knew a meniscus surgery would have 1/3rd the recovery time of a thigh strain though?
We can not possibly be content with ANOTHER draw, and we should come out ready to put our stamp on the season. FULL STOP.
100% agreed Marco. Samp is scary, but we are Juventus. We cannot settle for a draw.

As fucked up as this may sound, if Ferrera insists on being this stubborn then the best thing that could happen to us now is either Amauri or Trezeguet getting injured. That will force Ciro to play Giovinco.

Thats the annoying part Alessio, we are fucking JUVENTUS but nowadays when we play teams no matter how small and shitty they are the just don’t fear us. They don’t play for the draw but go for the win and we try and settle for the draw.

With Iaquinta out, we need to play a 4-2-3-1, with Amauri the lone ranger, trez has been terrible his poachers instinct is gone, and every bloddy time he was offside.
Albin Ekdal impressed me very much, never thought he would actually turn out to be something ,seems liek he will.
Martin Caceras, despite some of his crazy tackles, has been good for us soo far, and i hate Grygera and Zebina therefore, in my opnion he should be our styarting right back from now on and sell the other two, i’ve had enough of those two, getting frequently injured, and when they return they are soo terrible it infuriates me.
Giorgio Chiellini was a monster , and that tackle on Calaio was immense! One of the best ever! He’s hitting his straps again which gives me a sense of security.
Next game Sampdoria, need to improve a lot, hope Giovinco plays!

Side discussion, brought up by a debate on the home Offside page of a team of sponsored players. Diego is missing from team Adidas, and Mellberg’s still counted at Team Nike for numbers sake. In a little 7v7, which team would win?
Team Nike
Mellberg Cannavaro Caceres
Marchisio Poulsen Giovinco
AmauriTeam Adidas
Brazzo Legro Zebina
Melo Tiago

Sampdoria are a scary team, scarier than Inter in my opinion, our defense will have to concentrate and up there game as this is the toughest match we’re going to have yet (in my opinion)….
i definitely will not be happy with a draw, as this will allow Inter to gain more ground on us, and like Alessio said, this is Juve, we shouldn’t be happy with a draw, im behind the 4-2-3-1 since Iaquinta is out

Damn Alessio, thats a hard one….i say it would be close, but would put money on team Adidas, nothing like an old partnership to rip apart the other team

I hate to speak in absolutes, but the game against sampdoria will be a litmus test for ferrara.Yes he’s a rookie n is still learning the ropes, yes the team is still trying to gel,yes we have some key players out through injury…BUT it is in the fireplace of adversity that champions are forged, Ferrara HAS TO show something in this game. We need to see some direction from the bench and as much as I want us to win; I would much more than that want to see some sign of character emerging from this team. Like I said in a previous post, the biggest worry for me thus far has been our performance and not our results.I’m not saying we should play like Barcelona, but with the players we have we should be much more dominant and imposing than we have been.
I really do hope we begin to see that change from the midweek game.
May the force be with us.Posted from

In the words of Cannavaro… Three points are all that matters and we WILL get better when Marchisio, Tiago and especially: Del Piero return.
His absence (and having no replacement/questions marks above Govinco) has been the main reason of our bad performances. Once he will get back, I’m putting all my money on a revival of Juve. I just hope we’re not completely out of the race by then.
Alex plays fast, understands all our strikers or at least just has the class to see their runs in time (before the offside) and he gives us possession, goals, experience and 50% free kick scoring opportunities
.Sissoko and Melo should both be played, this partnership makes me lick my lips, that is our future. Put either Camoranesi/Marchisio or Tiago next to those two when possible and the 4-3-1-2 is a great formation IMO. But not with 2 big men up front.
All Ferrara has to do tomorrow is play Camoranesi and Giovinco. That can be done in all formations. 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1 (my preference btw) or 4-3-1-2…
Alessio: I studied Physical education and sport sciences, and going on with physiotherapy now. Really interesting field, if you ask me. Trying to understand the human being, just makes you wonder about a lot of other things as well sometimes.
Btw; team Nike will have the better of the play, but Adidas will kill them with Alex

i agree that the sampdoria match is a test of our scudetto credentials, and hopefully we passed it with flying colors.
anyway whats wrong with capello, i know he left juve when we were punished, but hey though that guy is a mercenary, he is a good coach, scudetto with milan, juve and ROMA? even though the roma squad is strong too, but still it’s an achievement

Do you guys think that maybe our strikers aren’t doing as well because of the new formation? Strikers like Trez and Amauri thrive off crosses. Strikers like Del Piero are the ones who thrive on passes through the middle. I like Diego, but do you guys think signing a winger might have been better? This is what Moggi had to say about it:

“Did anyone else notice how advanced Chiellini was playing?”
That’s something I’ve noticed a lot since the start of this season. I think it’s part of Ferrara’s game plan. Chiellini has had a decent number of shot on goals this season, almost scoring against quite a few teams. He even had an incorrect offside goal against Bordeaux (or was it Genoa?), I think.
