A Step in the Wrong Direction..

By: agiamba | May 19th, 2009

Children, you too can abandon your club in its´darkest hour and return a few years later to a glorified retirement!

“Fabio Cannavaro again with Juventus from July.

“Juventus football club has deposited the contract of Fabio Cannavaro which will run from July 1, 2009 until June 30, 2010. As noted, the player’s contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30

The good news, of course, is that last night in the Ale+10 match, he was jeered every single time he had the ball. May it continue all season.

  • He came back on a free, and we are paying him less than we used to. For the mentoring he would give the younger ones, I am prepared to forgive (though not forget), after all, the end justifies the means...
  • Harry
    and he was free...
  • Jim
you could be right giampiero...but i don't remember reading a specific amount...all i remember reading is that cannavaro and emerson were sold to real madrid for 20 million euros...

as far as zlatan...we don't need another forward....

plus canna only signed for one year...
  • giampiero
last time I checked we only got 7 million for his transfer.
  • agiamba
So did Zlatan's, but we're not going for him anytime soon.
  • Francesco
I guess it depends on preference, i prefer watching Italy, I get to see all the players put differences aside and collaborate, thats why i prefer wc's to many sucdetti, besides, didnt his sale generate alot of cash for you?
  • Chris
do we bring him back with open arms...i would say no...but i am willing to give it a shot...it's not like we paid for him....this hatred seems to go a little too deep...lol...juve had to sell somebody that year...they couldn't sell everyone b/c they started with -9 points in serie b and wanted to ensure their promotion immediately...cannavaro was coming off of a beast world cup, and they probably felt they could get a real nice return on his sale... as far as him being done...i don't necessarily agree with that...i think he can still contribute...not necessarily start every game..but he can help the young guys along...provide nice depth with experience...someone you wouldn't cringe at if forced to play...unlike let's say knezevic...and if i am not mistaken, he still is part of the italian national team...
  • incredible cock
dont understand why people are so emotional about it??
i dont blame canna... first of all he wast a juventitni for that long+ a footballersz career is relatively short so its more than logic you want o pour out hte aximu out of it.... so i dont blame viera and ibra as well,... the just moved to italy in the filosophy it wil be an nice career move, and then the should regelate because something that is beyond their hands??
oly to choose inter is a bit sensitive.
    back on canna.
for pitty sake i would have preferd a young defender to, but have you seen our defence this season?? canna is an reinforcement!
he did not well with real but it is in spain the simply do not understand the art of defence. a defender faces a lot more 1 to 1 situations vs a skilled and paced striker than in italy!!
+ he is for free howcab something for free be harmfull?:-)
  • george
He's got to be better than mellberg and knezevic...
  • Vincent
Canna, Criscito, Leggro, Chiellini, and Ariaudo is not bad. I really think Ariaudo could be great if given some more time, patience, and some guidance. I think with Fabio, Leggro, and Giorgio he will get this.
  • alex
like ive already said surely criscito isnt going to sit on the bench after playing so well unless he is going to be your starting left back?
  • agiamba
For above reason, Tom. The management already signed a center-back. Once they bring home Criscito, we're done. It's not as sexy as a star like Diego. We've spent about 8million (other than Andrade) on defense over the last 2 years, why would that change.
  • HolyMann
Tom, thats why they're called transfer rumors, cause they may not be true, but on the other hand, considering our management are who they are, u have all the right to be complaining, because with them, it may very well be true.
  • Tom
the transfer rumour makes me sick. juve is always linked with attacking player, either quagliarella or even pandev. why dont the board think about DEFENSE?
  • agiamba
Cannavaro: I <3 Real Madrid, and I love Jose Mourinho.

Good work, Fabio. You're winning me over already.

  • Kasia
So if a player was great for a country, any club from this country is bound to kiss the ground the player treads on?
HolyMann is right, a country and a club are two separate matters.
Not to mention I'm not Italian, so there goes whole dilemma :)
  • HolyMann
"and i will take that extra star on the Jersey instead of the world cup anyday, and im not gonna choose between a star on a jersey or a world cup"

Wow, talk about not knowing what to say.....sorry, still didnt my coffee and my brain is half functioning
  • HolyMann
Francesco, i completely DISagree with u, what Alessio said is correct, i am a Juve fan before i am an Azzuri fan, and i will take that extra star on the Jersey instead of the world cup anyday, and im not gonna choose between a star on a jersey or a world cup, ill just answer by saying give me the league and the world cup like we did for 2006. as Alessio once said, Cannavaro, just like Baggio, is a country hero but not a club hero
  • Brian
I'm really torn on this one. While I feel that the abandonment is unforgivable, I can only hope that Fabio will bust his ass be a mentor to Ariaudo and the other youths in the squad. I love the Gladiator quote, because there is a TON of truth to it. Winning tends to heal over a lot of wounds (but not all), and I hope like hell that next season's Juve wins a ton of hardware.

Fabio is going to have to work hard to regain the fans, but we have to be open to that as well. He welcomed the challenge of winning us back, and there is something admirable in that. It's not forgive and forget, but acknowledge and move on. If Ale and Gigi are cool with Fabio coming back, then maybe we should a least give him the chance too.

He's not going to play every match, but he'll be more capable then Mellberg has been to fill in. He didn't cost us anything for transfer (at least monetarily), so it frees up money to spend in other areas.

    Club August - May

    Azzurri June-July

    solved.
  • Francesco
well thats not how i see it. Italy first club second. Besides he won us a wc thats worth more than a star on my league jersey any day
  • agiamba
We're tifosi Juventini primo, and then tifosi degli Azzurri.
  • agiamba
    Francesco, you mean abandoning Juve?

Don't anyone give me that "he went to a foreign team, not a rival" bullshit. Milan was implicated with the scandal and couldn't sign him, Fabio flopped at Inter, and Lazio, Roma, or Fiorentina couldn't afford his salary. He left to win titles in Spain and Europe. (oops) He doesn't deserve to wear the Bianconero colors on a moral or sporting level.

A good Italian player, but never one at Juventus.
  • Nnahoj
What did he do two years ago? Look like shit at Real Madrid? Hell, he did that last week.
  • Vincent
I still wish he would have come to Napoli. Can't believe we didn't want him. I still think he is a decent defender, not as good as he once was for sure, but still decent enough. Canna is also a total pro and will help Ariaudo and Chiellini even more.
  • adam
Ofcourse we didn't Francesco, thats why we still jeer him.
  • Francesco
How can any of you jeer canna, do you forget what he did 2 years ago?
  • Nnahoj
My problem is less to do with the fact he left but more to do with his age. 36 years old? I'm sorry but that is just not prudent. Regardless of whether it's on a freebie it's just not smart. Why can't we do like some other clubs and scour Europe for a talented young defender...the next Skrtel or Vidic or Ivanovic? For some businessmen at the helm, they seem to be not too keen on taking risks.

Give me 19 year old Ariaudo over Cannavaro any day.

Having said that, he is signed now and all we can do is hope he performs well. Sigh...
  • ReleaseTheKrasic
Had it dropped in the past 2 months though? I wonder if it is just rebounding...Any news re: diego? Is he, isnt he? Is bayern going to make a swoop?
  • adam
I heard the price if Juventus' stock went up after Ranieri was sacked.
  • ReleaseTheKrasic
Careful what you say about sissoko in this blog alex...sissokomanlove might be listening. lol. I think all the pressure that us tifosi will put on Cannavaro should make him play top gear football. We will all be looking for any mistake to rip his head off. He obviously knows he has a lot to prove, lets just hope he can patch up the kinks in our defense. Im also curious to find out if we will still continue to play such a high offside trap game with old man fabio...
  • alex
im sure with sissoko infront of him fabio will be back to his best in no time. or he will be constantly under pressure from momos misplaced passes!
  • Nolan
If he plays as laughably bad as he did with Madrid this season, then loyalty is the least of your trouble. He might try harder, but considering how he hasn't gave a damn since the world cup, that might be pushing it.
  • KJ
"“Win the crowd, and you will win your freedom [Cannavaro]!”"

love the reference, too.. and you are right, alot of people will forget once the win column fills up...but the true tifosi will never forget
  • alex
whats with the anti-giovinco policy from your management? hes been the best player for juve when he was played?! its crazy seeing as though hes from turin as well he should be an idol for you already
  • MAD
Juventus close to exInter youth product, current Lazio Goran Pandev according to rumors.

Goran - who plays right behind the striker/s, essentially the same position as Gio and Diego but can also play a little wide - is valued by Lazio at @20 million.

Juve is rumored to be offering a little less than that + the card of De Cheglie.

Interesting, not a rumored move I would have anticipated...
  • HolyMann
if thuram wanted to stay, im pretty sure he wouldnt have been sold, and dont forget that Cannavaro was an Intermerda before joining Juve.....either way, i dont believe he should be welcome back
  • alex
cannavaro was at juve for 2 seasons. how many were nedved, buffon, trezeguet etc?

your management sold him off like they sold thuram who was at juve for a lot longer and a vice captain.
  • HolyMann
Well said Maresca....im with you on that, i wasnt THAT bothered that Cannavaro left, after all, we did buy him from Inter and he only stayed for 2 years with us, but its just not right for someone to leave, wait until everything is alright, and come back with open arms (im talking here about the management not the fans)
  • as i said, certain players were made at Juventus - I'm not saying the board were only motivated by money - They had to consider the fans as well as various other things.

Buffon was made his name at Juventus, as did Trez, alex and co.

Besides, i don't remember there being a huge outcry at Cannavaro leaving for Madrid - we just accepted it. Wankers like Ibrahimovic deserve our full hatred - here's a peice of shit that moves to Inter and starts moaning about Madama !
