A Roundup of Serie A, and Del Piero: Class Personified

By: alessio | May 11th, 2008

You’d expect a man to celebrate wildly after scoring in the end of the last home game of the season as well as the goal that pushed him to joint-capocannoniere with one week left. But that’s why Alex Del Piero is class personified. As the commentators mention, he didn’t celebrate because he didn’t want to insult Catania, who would have been safe had it remained 1-0. A terrific player, and a terrific man.

Other comments-
——> Who says Serie A is boring? With 2 relegation spots remaining, a CL spot up for grabs, and oh yeah, the Scudetto, the last weekend of the league promises to be one of the most entertaining in decades.
——> I, for one, hope Roma wins the title. I dislike Roma quite a bit for reasons I won’t get into now, but my hatred for Inter reigns supreme. If they do win, congrats on an improbable title filled with embarrassing screwups.
——> 3rd star next season….who’s with me!?
——> Going along with personal preferences, I’d like Fiorentina to get that 4th spot. They may crash and burn in the CL, but frankly I don’t care. Amici di nessuno, right? Serie A is my favorite league in the world but that doesn’t mean I have to pull for the team. But I digress- Fiorentina deserve it after a great season, Milan do not. And of secondary importance, Milan isn’t anointed to play in the CL. Oh yeah, and the Viola might seal it by beating none other than the Toro. Great stuff.
——> My beloved Hornets got destroyed tonight. Please, no comments.
——> Fulhamerica avoided the drop, picking up 4/5 wins in a season where they never won 3 in a row, oh, and their away form was dismal. As a US National fan and of US Soccer in general, great stuff. Bob Bradley is spared the embarrassment of half of his Starting XI playing in a second division.
——> While Goal.com is writing Vieri’s eulogy, why not bother doing it for Materazzi? Terrible form, terrible discipline….today culminated it alla Rangers for Vieri. Burdisso is still their weak link, but Marco’s gotta step it up or Ibra’s buddy Chiellini will be taking his spot in the national team soon.
——> No transfer talk for now, but I am excited to see our moves this summer. Disastrous last summer, no doubt. Hopefully Secco listens to Ranieri, which seemingly worked with Sissoko.

ADP rules. I hope he wins the “Capocannoniere” title, as he’s never won it in Serie A.

Oh and alas, that “3rd star” next year can only be virtual: La Lega Calcio only counts ‘legit’ titles, and we’re stuck at 27.

Oh, and speaking of Materazzi’s eulogy, all Italian-speakers should read Luigi Garlando’s “L’eroe di Berlino torna sulla terra” in today’s Gazzetta. Great stuff.

Is it even a question to whether or not ADP gets the call-up? I mean, he’s in good form and WANTS to play. Throw in the fact that he’s already an Italian legend… well, its almost cynical to even debate it.

What a great season it has been for Juve

After the cheating scandle, i really hates Juve, for the shame they brought to Italy. However, they have a side with many Italians, and now have about 5-6 Top italian youth players. Great stuff!!

Any way back to this season, not many would have said they would even make the top 4 after what happned, but they have shown why they have won 27 serie A titles…. i do think they will win it again in next 2 years … and the CL will also be Juves for the taking, with Giovinco being the new DP!!!

I forgot a huge point, another one of my hopes- PAVEL for one more year.

I read that Marco, thanks for the link. I like this sentence- “Il popolo non riconosce più l’eroe, solo il rigorista colpevole, l’egoista arrogante.” Most non-Interistas have known this for a while.

And in regards to the 3rd star, supposedly we can sew it on, as it’s not determined by the Lega.
“A team may put however many stars on their jersey, there is no regulation defining the issue and the League does not impose this argument,” explained Fabio Santoro, Deputy Secretary of the Lega Calcio. “We say that it is an ethical issue. If Juventus wanted to put the third star when they win their next championship it would be their choice, and certainly would not be a violation of the rules.”

I don’t like Roma either but compared to Inter, they are saints over there! I really really really hope Roma win their last game and Inter at least tie just to see the merda Interistas drown in their tears…i want them to lose it so bad! AS for the CL spot I too hope its the Viola because overall their campaign has been much more convincing than that of Milan.

ADP, Trez, and Borriello should all give each other a call and agree not to score this weekend.

    ATTN alessio ———-

I dont get this whole Juve was robbed of 2 serie a titles … and that they should place a 3rd star on the kit …. Why??? Im sure in 5-6 yrs time, they will get 30 serie a titles anyway …. what i dont get from juve fans, is that they think they were robbed by calcopoli .. why is that??? Juve and Moggi cheated, and this is why juve won the seire a …. its a fact … i still dont get why moggi would do it, but they still cheated. However I still think moggi should have been placed in prision, rather than have juve sent to serie b

Ah, I stand corrected alessio… I didn’t know. Seems weird though.

By the way, that Gazzetta Materazzi article I linked to previously has been translated into English. I really recommend you all read it: “Berlin’s hero turns to foe“.

Oh, and since we’re talking about ADP’s imminent call-up to the Azzurri, it would only be appropriate to read my “Will Alessandro Del Piero Be Going to Euro 2008? post. :)
