A Little Dose of Chicken Soup

Are we back? Hell no. Before the game, I grumbled a bit when I saw Ferrara’s lineup. The Coppa is a throwaway competition, and it should be for the young players, right? After the game, I can perhaps see why he played the team he did. This win, regardless if it was partially Napoli’s B-team or it was a Coppa game, could be an important boost in confidence that will help us over the next few weeks. I can tell you personally, it was very positive to see a Juventus that could play, score, and keep a clean sheet. Ratings after the jump.

ITALY SOCCER ITALIAN CUP
The tongue is slowly coming back! :)

LE PAGELLE:
Manninger: 6- Relatively undisturbed at the back, but looked assured during most of the game.

Caceres: 6.5- Started out a bit slow and sloppy in defense, but really grew into the game and contributed nicely to attacking play. Went off late with a muscular problem, hopefully it’s nothing serious. He’s 22, he hardly played last season, and this is only his 10-15th game in Italy. Sign this kid up!
Legrottaglie: 6- I think people are starting to come around to my view that Legrottaglie should be starting over Cannavaro. He’s not necessarily a rock by himself, but when he plays alongside a strong player like Chiellini, he does well. Legro will probably screw up this weekend against Chievo just to prove me wrong.
Chiellini: 7- Only one question remains after this match: What would we do if Giorgio was at Man City right now?
Grygera: 6- (On 45, 2nd Half) Brought on the second half in place of Grosso, Grygera was much more solid defensively than Grosso and had a few decent attacking plays too. It appears Ferrara may see Grosso for his poor form, after all.
Grosso: 5- Leaves massive gaps at the back, which is awful but sometimes acceptable if he’s doing something up front. Against Milan he did nothing offensively, and thus only conceded space to Beckham and Co. Grygera and Grosso should have attacked the flanks more, given that Antonini and Abate are still very green, but failed to do so.

What? That’s exactly the same rating and description from the game against Milan? Yeah, I guess it’s the same, maybe I’d give him a 4.5. Rightfully hooked at the break for Grygera.

Salihamidzic: 6- Didn’t build a lot of attacking play, but ran plenty and played an effective game in midfield. A solid enough display.
Felipe Melo: 6- Played a simple, restricted game as a mediano and did it well. A very welcome display after two months of sheer disaster.
De Ceglie: 6.5- Started out slowly, but grew into the game. He looked determined, a man with something to prove, and his pace and endurance were a welcome surprise in midfield. He did pretty well as a LCM in a 3-man midfield with the Azzurrini, and did very well today both in defense and in his attacking output. His determination and play today merits another starting shirt.

Diego: 7- As I said earlier this season, the 4-3-1-2 can work with we have a regista…or if we have a trequartista AND a seconda punta. With Del Piero to pull away the attention of the defense, as well interchange play with, Diego had more freedom and played well, creating goal opportunities and threatening the net himself.

Bentornato, capitano!!

Amauri: 4.5- Another disappearing act from Amauri, who looked absolutely dreadful up front against a mediocre defense. Unlike against Milan, he had some service but still looked static and unimaginative. Imagine if Trez or Iaquinta were starting up top alongside Diego and ADP. More disappointment.
Del Piero: 6.5- He didn’t look like he was in solid form or fitness yet, but it was an encouraging display from il Capitano. Bypassed Napoli defenders, passed well, and combined well with Diego. An encouraging display.

Ferrara: 6- If he played a full team today to attempt to rebuild some semblance of form, then job well done and a smarter decision than what I would have gone with. The team as a whole generally played well today, with demerits only for Grosso and Amauri. Hopefully he sees Grosso and Cannavaro’s poor form, and benches them for a bit despite their Azzurri form, and gives more chances to De Ceglie and Caceres.

Fair Play

I’m not sure what to think about our first goal. On one hand, I think it’s best to give the benefit of the doubt to the downed player, although sometimes they are just trying to stop play. Given how quickly Datolo got up to yell at the ref after we scored our first goal, I think we can safely say it was the latter.

I think what we need is a bit of accountability in these situations- if you go down and stop play, you have to sit out say two minutes. That’s an arbitrary number, of course, but I think a bit of time out would discourage people from going down for no reason, and players who took a knock would probably use that time to stretch out and use magic spray. I think it’s a simple solution, much like my preferred one for diving. (Asking the player if he took a dive)

Transfers!

After the match, Ferrara said that he would be looking at a center-midfielder and a striker/winger in the winter mercato. Recent rumors and signs suggest the latter would be Davide Lanzafame, given Ghirardi’s angry comments, though it’ll be a tricky deal getting Palermo and Parma to both acquiesce to the transfer.

As for the center-midfielder/regista he spoke of, we’ve been over this before and I can’t see us spilling out a lot of money, we spent it all this summer. Ledesma is an option, and given his potential price tag (low or zero) all the more possible. I don’t see Ferrara gunning for Ledesma unless he was the only option, so even though all signs point to Ledesma, it’s going to be someone else.

As for my mention of Pazzini the other day, my friend Derrick summed up my thoughts pretty well over at Bleacher Report.

Can you Guus where Guus is?

Yesterday, there was a report in TuttoMercatoWeb that Hiddink was seen in Turin, and it was picked up on the front page of The Offside. Supposedly, he was dining at a famous restaurant with portraits of Juventus players all over the walls, and displaying a good command of the Italian language. A lot of pro-Hiddink people got excited, and I derisively responded “The newest sources say that Hiddink was last seen giving a pompino to Barack Obama. What’s that you say? No evidence to back it up?” First of all, if you don’t know what pompino means, you might be able to guess, and second of all, I would not recommend Googling it. Not if you want to keep your job. Second of all, not surprisingly, his agent came out and denied that he was anywhere near Italy.

It sounded legitimate, because it talked about his location and the proprietor of the restaurant talked about it, but even the biggest Guus fans should remember that the media is bullshit, and they can say what they want, but it doesn’t make it real. Take the Tiago-to-Atletico rumors, it made sense, but who knew if it was going to happen? Once I saw pictures in Marca of Tiago in Madrid’s airport, that’s when I thought it was happening. Bring me photos of Hiddink in Turin, or Malpensa, and I’ll start to believe the rumors.

The New Triade

Jean-Claude Blanc deserves to stay at the club, and I think in general he has done a solid job at Juventus, though not necessarily as a role as President. Alessio Secco should stay, but I don’t think as the Transfer Director anymore. His inexperience has cost us quite a bit, and it still is. I think the two above issues are significantly bettered by the arrival of Roberto Bettega, as it’s a bit difficult to imagine Blanc stepping down or Secco getting canned. Bettega should take care of a large amount of footballing responsibility from Blanc, and have veto power over Secco’s transfers.

Also, Contini is a douchebag. That is all.

  • Immobile, but Paolucci will probably get the nod because of his experience. Roberto's got a preview up.

Thanks, Jorid. Decent finishing, it seems. I, too, am on the ABA (Anyone But Amauri) boat. I guess we do not have any choice apart from Paolucci and ADP tomorrow.

Comrade, that's his 08-09 season goals with Catania. He was on loan there I think. He's not terrible, still fairly young, has good movement and good finishing. Although he has still yet to really prove himself, I am all for giving him a chance. Because Amauri, as Italians say: "Mi ha proprio rotto le palle."
  • Comrade
How is Paolucci's style of play? I have never seen him in action.
  • bianconeri
Amauri wont be playing tommorow, he's suspended.
  • Robee
Paolucci is in the squad for tomorrow's game, while Iaquinta is still left out. It'll (hopefully) be Immobile or Paolucci partnering Alex upfront, 'cause if Ciro throws in another 4-4-1-1, someone will at least try and slap him...
  • j
maybe the reason ciro keeps amauri in the team (after trez and iaq) is that he believes the very next match would be the return of the old amauri
  • Nnahoj
I say we throw Paolucci in immediately. He surely can't be worse than Amauri. No one can!

official: Michele Paolucci has returned, on loan (?). i haven't seen Michele in action, anyone has any idea how good he is? or better yet is this good news to us at all?

"de ceglie is faster and stronger than marchisio and should always be preferred"

Are you saying Ferrara should bench Marchisio? I don't understand this at all. You can play both of them in the midfield. Just making sure you know that.
  • Sam.
"even when sissoko is back, he should not be played alongside melo(too similar) neither should be poulsen"

Completely disagree with that if we are playing a 5 man midfield then hell yes, those two together will break any midfield apart. Remember the Samp match?
  • Robee
Vince, one of the reason why I would like your players in a 4-2-3-1 is because I have a different opinion on Diego... With wingers or 2 attackers in front of him (Roma, Sampdoria, Napoli,...) he always plays better if you ask me, just because he needs possibilities upfront. He's not the type of player that will open up a game on his own every week. And that's why I really like him behind the strikers, bringing a calm breeze over our midfield, holding possession and not unimportantly: giving our (mediocre) defensive mids (from a technical/passing point of view) easy solutions.

As for Sissoko, mufid, the guy is a priceless asset of our team and I'm hoping Mali draws or loses on monday, then he'll be back by next weekend. He will prove his worth, alongside Melo or not. I remember the Viola game, which was one of our best games this season, with Sissoko-Melo-Poulsen winning everything and freeing our strikers plus Diego of all responsibilities, but they managed to screw up every chance we had and so we eventually didn't win the game. Change Poulsen with Marchisio/De Ceglie and it'll even work better imho.
  • bianconeri
Jose, I'm not really sure we would do much better with Nedved on the team. He was a great player but his last two seasons with us really were seasons to forget.

I don't think buying players at this point would be a smart idea. Right now our club has no idea what direction it should take. We don't know if we are sticking with Ferrera or not, hell we don't even know what formation we ar going to use in 2 weeks time. And I admit it now, selling Cristian Zanetti was a HUGE mistake, you were right on that Alessio.

Our main objective right now should be a top 4 spot and nothing less. If we don't get that Juve will be a 2nd rate club for atleast another 5 years.
  • Gabriele Marcotti knows his stuff. He writes for the Times in the UK, it's worth a read.
  • mufid
was it a pain killer shot we all had wedensday night? any way ,here is the moral of the game:
1-cannavaro and grosso should always be on the bench
2-de ceglie should be our future winger not defender
3-diego next to melo in center midfield is proving to be smart choice
4-de ceglie is faster and stronger than marchisio and should always be preferred
5-even when sissoko is back, he should not be played alongside melo(too similar) neither should be poulsen
  • Comrade
Spot on article, dave. I think that's what alessio has been arguing all this long. BTW, why all the discussion about Ozil? I did not see any rumors linking him to us. Are there?
  • Jose
The guy from the sports illustrated article has no idea what he is talking about. He says that we didn't loose anyone important last year... what about Nedved?. If he was around I think we would have been doing better. He also says that PDC can only play as a left back, I guess he missed that Milan game in which we destroyed Zambrota playing as a left mid/wing. I think Ciro has to take some of the blame, but partly our team has been managed very poorly by the higher powers, Blanc, Gigli and of course Secco
  • Sam.
Ozil is a fantastic player one of the best in Germany, but he is not what we need.

And are we being linked with our youth products becuase we dont have the money to spend on others? Cause really Lanzafame, Poulucci, Yago?
  • Vince
Robee, you make a good point. The way the 4-4-2 works with attacking wingers really does take on the shape of a 4-2-3-1. And realistically we talk all these tactical numbers and they really are so interchangeable and move between systems depending on who has the ball and where it is on the field. The reason I say 4-4-2 is i would like Diego to play closer to the striker. I love that the guy is always making himself available for the ball but it almost comes at a fault. He shouldn't be tracking back as far as he does at times. So I mention 4-4-2 to a way to possible keep him higher up the field.I mean we dont want him to be a Brazilian version of Rooney(others may have their opinions but I find Rooney rubbish. He is a diver and has little to know tactical awareness... but maybe thats the Italian in me) Keeping our look more like this after adding another world class winger:
    ------Buffon-----
    Caceres---Legro---Chellieni---PDC
    ------Poulsen----Marchisio------
    Silva---------------------Gio
    ---Diego------------
    --------Iaquinta------------

As for Poulsen, you make another good point. Although I think we have to agree to disagree. I think his passing is better than both Melo and Sissoko and I enjoy that he wins balls back and looks for a more talented player as an outlet. In that regard, I appreciate his work on the field.
  • Robee
Vince, what you're saying doesn't match with the 4-4-2 imo, more with the 4-2-3-1 actually... But it still is a perfect reasonable solution.

Except for... Poulsen imo; I really hope we sell that guy... He excels at nothing and too often plays in a pass, which brings someone else in trouble. He really doesn't add much to the squad. Football is simple, but he needs to learn to play a difficult pass once and a while... After all, taking risks opens up games, he's just too mediocre to be playing at Juventus. Maybe he's just afraid of failing... But I'm not entirely objective on this one probably. I just don't like him, he always looks so gray, like he has no character at all...

I didn't know it was empty alessio, looks like some FIGC decision-making after all :p
  • Vince
I'll put my vote in for a shot at running out the 4-3-2-1, at some point this season. Some combination of PDC-Melo-Marchisio or Sissoko-Melo Marchisio with Diego and Gio partnering behind a striker(at this point any striker that can stay healthy and fit for more than one game at a time). Its worth a shot we have tried almost everything else.
However, how about a 4-4-2 with wingers. Combine Marchisio with any of our ball winners, I would prefer Poulsen if healthy cause he seems to have the best passing range but Sissoko works too. Have them play a bit more holding, almost a la Ranieri's style. Then you have more advanced wingers, with fewer defensive responsibilities and less tracking back allowing our fullbacks to stay more at home and only push up when we have the other team pinned back. Then you have Diego play off a tireless, holding central forward. In this case i am all for getting Ribery or Silva. Either of those on one side and Gio on the other in changing play with Diego would be phenomenal!... Couldn't be any worse than now.
Oh and I only say this assuming Gio gets a dedicated run out for consecutive games with the confidence of the manager to find his form.

  • Interesting stat, mohd.

Robee, I agree, it's a better punishment for the ignorant people. The one question I have about it is this- Supposedly, it was the Curva singing chants during the Napoli game? The entire curva was completely empty during the Napoli game! Either way, it's a better punishment than just a small fine on the club.

Zeytulayev, man, I had to look up where he is now. Serie C1.

Here's my thoughts on Ozil, Silva, and Ribery: First of all, all I know about Ozil is he's the Turkish-German version of Diego, and apparently quite good. Where would he play though? His signing would definitely kick out Giovinco, and I wonder how much space he would get. As for Silva and Ribery, we need to freaking decide what formation we are going with. Are we going to get wingers and do 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2? Someone needs to make a call.

back to our injuries problem some one from la gazzetta spoke about our injuries and till half of this season we had 40s injury all the players get injured except one guess how? it is Legrottaglie

and i am after hearing that i said wow prayers do work and legro should take the whole team to attend a mass and pray to not get hurt

Who is our winter signing? Hmmm.
I think it could be ledesma. they have rejected inters offer. but iCan t see us spending a whole lot. Would be nice to have candreva, dagostino, or pallidino. It probably makes more sense to get a cd or striker though.
  • Robee
The Curva Sud will be closed against Roma, alternative punishment, but quite a good one if you ask me... They take on the targeted group without affecting the others and not reflecting the guilt on Juventus itself...
  • Mo
Yago and paolucci don't count although Hiddink does!
  • Pablo
Hey, Ilyas Zeytulayev is a great player IMO, he is just what we need to be the best team in the world. He will be the next Messi, is the best youth product since Pele was a youth product, you should watch some youtube videos... bah, who am I kidding.
  • Mo
It's mid January and there is no sign of our winter signing? I think the most likely player to join would be ladesma....any insights? Opinions?
  • dave
    lol..very good jorid....
  • Jorid
All these reports of youth products coming back to us are somewhat ridiculous IMO. What's the next headline going to be? "Juventus looking to bring back Ilyas Zeytulayev and Andrea Gasbarroni!"...
  • dave
reading reports of michele paolucci returning to us...
  • Jorid
Ozil is a stud, but quite honestly, I wouldn't be too optimistic about him knowing the douche that serves as a Sporting Director for us.
  • Jose
I followed Armando's suggestion of looking up Ozil in youtube. He is 21 and he plays great. I have to admit I am jealous of clubs that give youngsters a chance. After Giovinco's stay at Empoli he promised to be a great player. Now he is 23 or so and doesn't play at all. What a waste. If we keep bringing attacking midfielders and specially left attacking midfielders then we should sell Seba.
  • al
cant wait to watch the next match. we'll play 4.3.1.2. with many young guns.
things that i am looking forward to:
    - seeing immobile play alongside ADP (might be for full 90')
    - seeing PDG play as LB (Grosso I think is injured/ill)
    - seeing marchisio in the midfield (probably with melo and brazzo)
  • ned lowe
it's probably silly 2 make a decision based on youtube videos alone, but it seems ledesma takes a mean free-kick
