2010 Transfer Target Player Profiles: Simone Pepe

Perhaps in the next couple of days, this transfer rumour will be put to bed. If steam was a requirement to get a write-up here on the Juventus Offside as a possible acquisition, then this rumour is the equivalent of an ancient Roman steam bath and certainly qualifies. With only the signatures apparently left to finalize this deal, the notion of Simone Pepe as a Bianconero is just a formality away.

“It’s an important day for me. We have agreed on everything. I have to speak with Juventus, I am just waiting to sign,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport. “Del Neri is a great coach. This is the most important chance of my life. When he used to coach me I used to play as a striker. When the move is all official, then I can say that this is one of my biggest objectives and the most important opportunity of my career.”

Born on the 30th of August 1983 in Albano Laziale, a township of Rome, Simone Pepe grew up playing football within Roma’s youth system. In January 2002, the eighteen year old was loaned out to Serie C team Calcio Lecco where he appeared in only five matches. Then at the end of that season, the winger was transferred to Teramo Calcio in June 2002, another Serie C team at the time, where he found much more regularity and scored an impressive 11 goals in 31 appearances.

After that promising year with Teramo, Palermo signed Simone in a co-ownership deal from A.S. Roma for just 1,000 to help the Sicilian club’s push for Serie A promotion in the summer of 2003. In the coming season, Palermo finished first in Serie B however the promising youth was once again loaned out to yet another Serie B side in Piacenza Calcio in July 2004 because the club thought Pepe had to gain more experience before making his debut in Serie A.

During that summer, Palermo bought the second half of the player’s registration rights from Roma for an undisclosed fee. Palermo’s timing seemed to spot on as much like his time with Teramo Calcio two years earlier, Simone had another impressive season where he scored a career high 12 goals in 30 matches for the Piacenza outfit. In June 2005, Palermo recalled Pepe on account of Luca Toni leaving for Fiorentina and half way through the season Simone was introduced to his new Rosanero head coach, Luigi Del Neri.

The two shared little time together as Pepe left Sicily once again in the winter transfer window in late 2005 early 2006 for Udinese in a co-ownership deal. The right sided winger, who also spent some time being used as a second striker under Del Neri at Palermo, enjoyed a modest spell with the Zebrette before being loaned out again in July 2006 to Cagliari. There he scored his first Serie A goal against his former club Palermo to win the match in the dying minutes. Cagliari then bought the second half of his registration rights from the Rosanero before Udinese bought the journeyman’s remaining half from the Rossoblu.

There in Udinese, he finally began to enjoy some stability in his professional career. Since 2007 Simone has played 85% of Udinese’s domestic matches and scored 13 goals in 95 appearances. In Europe, Pepe gained some experience with Udinese’s 2008-2009 Uefa Cup campaign which saw them defeat defending champs Zenit St. Pertersburg 2-1 on aggregate. However their impressive run ended as they went down to Diego’s ex-club Werder Bremen then dubbed as “Italian Killer” since they managed to eliminate Inter and Milan from Europe that year as well.

“After starting his career as a centre-forward, Simone Pepe has since carved out a niche for himself on the right side of attack, where his ball-winning abilities have caught the eye as well as an ability to shuttle up and down the flank at speed. While not noted for his goalscoring prowess, Pepe works unstintingly for his fellow forwards, a trait that helped him progress from the national U-17 side to the U-21s, for whom he made numerous appearances between 2004 and 2006. An unexpected international debut came in October 2008, when Marcello Lippi named him in the side for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying match against Bulgaria.”

For a rumored 10 million transfer fee, Marotta is trying to make this sum/transfer much easier to swallow, as it’s been designed to be paid out over a four year period at around 2.5 million per. Other news sources are including the services of midfielder Albin Ekdal, who was on loan to Siena last season, and primavera forward Ciro Immobile on loan to Udinese next year at no cost. According to many, the duo would have found it extremely difficult to gain first team experience this term with Juventus, so a loan deal could be beneficial for their overall development going forward.

[Transfer Update] It seems that the Milos Krasic transfer to Juventus is now just about as likely to happen as the Simone Pepe acquisition as both players have openly spoke about an offer from Juventus, and said they’re confident that the deal will go through. Krasic, who was interviewed as he was eating with his Serbian teammates during a player lunch, had this to say about the potential move to Torino:

“The negotiations between the two clubs are still going on. I am hoping that everything will conclude quickly. CSKA has set a price, and we shall see what happens, but I believe that there will not be any problems, and everything will be resolved a positive manner so that I can play for Juventus.”

“Juventus are one of the biggest clubs in Italy, with many fans who follow them. For my career, a move such as this would be very important. I know that Del Neri is the new coach, and I am very happy for this. His 4-4-2 system adapts perfectly to my style of play.”

If you’d like to read the orginal version in Serbian you can find it here at Sportal.rs. You can also see a video of the interview if you want as well. Things are definitely heating up on the transfer front ladies and gentlemen. Here are just two of the transfers in the late stages of completion that we know about. Remember, Marotta’s always got at least one on the ball.

IERI… OGGI… DOMANI… SEMPRE JUVE!!!

  • awesome blog, follow me on twitter if you use it @ http://twitter.com/gr8p
  • I'm sure there are negotiations going on for defenders that we just don't know about. We only heard about Pepe and Krasic when the deals were near complete. We probably won't hear about a defender signing until all that's left is to to sign the contracts.
  • Antonio
ahmed thats a funny joke. if its not a joke may god smite you.

i have a question for everyone here...and i would appreciate an honest answer. simone pepe, winger. krasic...midfielder. along with the presently owned diego, marchisio, camo, etc. so my question is

WHY THE FUCK ARENT WE BUYING ANY BADLY BADLY BADLY NEEDED DEFENDERS OR STRIKERS
  • Pepe isn't a bad signing guys. We need depth on the wings. We can't afford to get all world class wingers. Besides, like someone else said here, look what Del Neri did with Mannini. They can't rebuild the team in one summer. It's going to take time. Let's see how things progress. I'm very optimistic.
  • ivan
krasic, pepe, camo and BRAZZO on the right. at least the bosnian will have to leave if we manage to offload him...
there is a video of krasic titled "i want to go to juventus" (can be seen on tuttosport), but he is really only talking about the serbian national team. very funny
  • bianconeri
This was a great post by Roberto, props to him and Alessio for committing to this site and keeping it running. But yea Roberto's best is when he's pissed. Good stuff.
  • Jenny G
Mass,I agree with you 100%. Haha, Ahmed!
  • juventina canadese
Ber, this last article is 'sciapito'... not your usual style. Bring back that cutting with that we all love and hate ;)
As far as my two cents go with regards to next season, we don't need anymore overrated Brazilians. Melo was the biggest 'ciofeca' in the history of player acquision. But he's just an example of the mismanagement of the team these last few years. They lost their perspective and bought random pieces, not specific pieces to complete the broken puzzle we were left with after caliopoli. We need vision, better trainers, and a less humid training facility. These players sustain more injuries than a 90 year old osteoporosis patient! First we need the basics, and then we can talk about starting line-ups.
  • Gaetano
Their the same amauri trolls. They are the same person.
  • ahmed and ping
for the sake of my belief in humanity, plz say you are joking
  • oliviero
Ahmed and ping ^^^ yur either blind or stupid
  • Mass
Hahahahaha, that has to be the worst line up I have ever seen Ahmed!!!! I'm pretty sure my sister's under 10's soccer team could beat that Juve side. Please don't let the door hit you on the way out!!
  • Ping
Yeah!! I completely agree with you ahmed! That line up is incredible not like this overrated marchios and giovincos with no talent and heart
  • Ahmed
Chiellini is a horrible player, who does not deserve to play for juventus. We need to keep our core of true juventinis such as zebina, amauri, grosso, cannavaro, tiago, molinaro, melo, and amauri who is by far our best player. we should buy alot of brazilins for atakin powers. Instead, we play overrate players like giovinco, diego, marchisio (who we should trade for a real midfielder like simplicio).. Our lineup for next yer should be

    manninger
    zebina-cannavaro-sissoko-molinaro
    tiago--simplicio--melo--grosso
    ---Amauri---kuranyi--

with a lineup like this grosso and tiago can use their speed to supply the wings which will support del neris formation. THne amauri can do some of his magic for wonder goals.. and kuranyi is a world class striker. However, we're bein linked with players like krasics, and pepper. As juve fans we should all unite to get the transfers and startings of players who deserve it like Amauri and kuranyI!!
  • HolyMann
    the guy's a fucking monster
  • bianconeri
HolyMann - I'm not 100% sure but I think that was a game during the 07-08 season, forgot who we were playing, where Zebina gave up a penalty or fucked up defensively. Chiellini got pissed later on and I think he let Zebina know how he felt. Props to Chiellini.
  • HolyMann

does anyone know what the hell was happening at 1:06??
  • bulle
Happy with both players. Whats good is that both play on the right side, that sort of clears up the question if Pepe will be a starter or not.

Agree with Mass that Kjaer is a better option but it sure as hell would be amazing to have most of the Italian national team playing at Juventus. The Kjaer buy-out clause of €12 million was only for foreign clubs. Zamparini isn't the easiest person to negotiate with so I think that may be a reason Juve are focusing on negotiations with Bari and Genoa.
  • Alex
look what del neri did with daniele mannini...
  • Mass
Very disappointed with the potential Pepe signing. No matter what is said about this guy, he is nothing more than a very AVERAGE player. The fact that we are spending 10 million euros on this guy is beyond a joke. That's not to mention that some reports are suggesting we are only purchasing half his rights from Udinese. Krasic is a player I know little about. He is widely regarded as a very gifted player, but I will reserve my judgement until I have seen him in action. At the moment I'm not impressed with most of the players we have been linked too. Bonucci is a gifted player, but its blindingly clear that Kjaer is the better player and has more potential. Not to mention that he appears to be the cheaper option at centre back. I have a feeling that we may sell both Diego and Giovinco in this market, which would undoubtedly be another huge mistake. Have to admit that I'm not hugely buoyed but its still early days.
  • bianconeri
Thats one fear I have about Criscito, he hasn't been used as much defensively as I hoped for. But nonetheless hes still a much needed upgrade over PDC and Grosso.
  • ned lowe
criscito's not-to-impressive showings at leftback for the azzuri is a throw-back to his first season in turin (insha allah he will have many more!)he is not very strong defensively, his strength is in his offensive ability and his over-lapping runs ..gasperini rightly observed this, n often deployed him as left wing-back in a 3-5-2 where his defensive frailties were less exposed

if and when he comes back to juve, we will do well to use him in a similar position.
  • bianconeri
Also it pretty reassuring that we aren't looking for a LM/LW. Things might change in a few weeks, but for now it looks like Giovinco will own the left side.
  • bianconeri
Hopefully he lasts more than a few weeks, unlike Marchionni.
  • Alastair
Pepe will be the new Marchionni. That's the expectation I've set.
  • Sam
Yeahhh wow! Drenthe is a no go, HELL NO! That guy is a quick fuck but thats about it, lets not waste money on him please...
  • agiamba
By the way, good job on the profile. First google search result on Simone Pepe leads here. Anyone notice roberto is posting a bit more frequently nowadays. CSIS relived you from your duties?

Found Bin Laden, made out with Jessica Alba, now he's back writing for the Juve Offside. Life's a bitch, ain't it?
  • I don't like the Pepe move. Not one bit. I have a feeling he will be a failure. Let's hope I am wrong and that he doesn't feature as a starter.

With all these wingers, 4-4-2 seems inevitable. Question is, what happens to Diego? I read about Zaccheroni's comments that Del Neri does not want him. If we sell him, it will be at heavy loss. Plus, I want to see him on the team next year.
  • Mab
I think it's pretty clear at this point, with two transfers all but complete this early in thus summer, the huge difference between marotta and secco. Where the douche kept rumors of a transfer going for months (or in the case of Diego, years) and all the while causing the transfer fee to be hiked, Marotta is quick and dirty. I love this guy!!
  • Krasic and pepe on the right... also Camo if he stays. Thats a lot of depth IMHO.
Lets hope Gio stays on the Left hand side of the pitch. Unfortunately, it seems we are destined to make one blunder atleast by selling Diego.
  • Vince
Drenthe?! whoa whoa whoa! when did that talk start up again... no Drenthe, not even on a free. I can't stand another player that's only upsides are his physicality and work rate... how about someone that can pass and unlock a defense?
  • agiamba
    Sounds good to me, Ivo.

And I agree 1,000x with what DJP said. Pepe is an alright player, but not more than a reserve. What makes this all the more ridiculous? We sold Marco Marchionni for 2.5mil, who is 2 1/2 years older. I don't think Pepe is any better, but as a reserve it works. Marchionni had Camoranesi in front of him, who will be in front of Pepe?
  • Brazo gone then? lol
  • Ivo
Hope you guys understand that Pepe is a worker. His work rate and stamina in real life are probably 19 or 20 :)

It would be pretty useful to have him breathing down the neck of whoever is starting on the wings, which will keep our wingers from slipping up. And as Andy said, at that price, it's a good purchase.

Drenthe on the left, Krasic on the right, Pepe creeping up on both. Me likey
  • Jorid
    X2 on what DJP said.
  • DJP
I'm fine with him as a reserve. But if Pepe is being brought in to start, I won't be all that happy about it.
  • Andy
I don't see how anyone could complain about Pepe @ 2.5 million a year over four years. He's no star, but he'll provide decent depth on the wing for very cheap. He could very well be coming in as a backup at that price, in which case this is a damn good move.

Getting first team Serie A experience for Immobile and (more) for Ekdal is a very nice bonus.
