The Final Stretch….

By: alessio | April 15th, 2009

Genoa’s victory on Saturday pretty much destroyed any remaining Scudetto hopes for the Juventini. Once again, a disastrous return from a break seems to have ruined our season. Naturally, we’ve already started to think about the mercato, possibly changing coaches, and the prospects of the upcoming season, but there’s still 7 games to go.

04/19- 32ª giornata Juventus-Inter
04/26- 33ª giornata Reggina-Juventus
05/03- 34ª giornata Juventus-Lecce
05/10- 35ª giornata Milan-Juventus
05/17- 36ª giornata Juventus-Atalanta
05/24- 37ª giornata Siena-Juventus
05/31- 38ª giornata Juventus-Lazio

What is there to play for? Well, the Coppa, for one. But as we all know, it is a worthless consolation trophy, and that’s it, though it’d be nice to put a Silver Star on our jersey ahead of Roma. What else? Pride. That’s all that’s left, and with tough games against Inter and Milan, that is paramount. Some might say we should finish 2nd ahead of Milan, frankly, I couldn’t care. Thanks to Uefa monkeying around with the Champion’s League, the top 3 in Italy go directly to the group stage. Milan finishing ahead of us would only convince them that their team isn’t in crisis; other than that, I don’t think being the bigger bridesmaid is terribly important.

For now, everyone generally assumes Ranieri will be at the head for next season to finish out his contract. Since silverware is an impossibility (except the Coppa, but again, no one cares about it) it’s time for Ranieri to tinker with the squad. Why are we so shit after breaks? Why do we have one of the better defenses in the league that absolutely goes to hell against Pelissier at home? (Mellberg, I’m looking at you.) Is Tiago actually going to cut it at Juve or is he going to remain at this wildly inconsistent level? Can Giovinco get an extended run out in the league? Where is De Ceglie’s best position? Is Zebina better than Grygera at right-back? What the hell is going to be our starting lineup next season? There’s plenty of others.

If this was last season, I would say beat Milan and Inter, and the other results are slightly less important. But we’re building, presumably, to win the Scudetto next year. We can’t lose or draw with the Cagliaris and Chievos at home, no matter how good they are, if we want to be Champion’s. Perhaps these games will be even more important than the other two, with nothing to play for, can we summon the grit and determination to beat 3 relegation-fighting squads? We’ve had mediocre results against these squads with the Scudetto on the line.

With the Derby d’Italia coming up, most Juventini are understandably not as excited for it as we were only two weeks ago. But the run-in to summer break, however disappointing it may be, should not be discounted or ignored. This is the time for Juventus to figure out if we can win the Scudetto with this squad and this coach, and if not, what we need to chance.

To be honest, i think Del Piero might work even better as a trequartista. It is his natural role much like it was Baggio’s, and in that position he’s not relied only to score goals, but also to create them (maybe even moreso, it depends), both of which he’s great at. Plus this way we can put 3 strikers onto the pitch and play more creative, attacking football.

This is how we should play if we use a 4-3-1-2 on Saturday:

    Buffon
    Zebina/Grygera Legrottaglie Chiellini De Ceglie/Molinaro
    Giovinco Tiago Nedved
    Del Piero
    Iaquinta Trezeguet

Or, now that i think about it, a 4-3-2-1 might be good too, like this:

    Buffon
    Zebina/Grygera Legrottaglie Chiellini De Ceglie/Molinaro
    Tiago Poulsen Nedved
    Giovinco Del Piero
    Iaquinta

But if Ranieri insists on using a 4-4-2, lets hope he at least uses it in the best way possible with the players available, like this:

    Buffon
    Zebina/Grygera Legrottaglie Chiellini De Ceglie/Molinaro
    Marchionni Tiago Nedved Giovinco
    Iaquinta Trezeguet/Del Piero

Ok, assuming we are not discussing again the whole “ADP is really a trequartista, ADP is a support striker, ADP is the best goalkeeper in the world”, why don’t we try the 4-3-1-2 with giovinco as the “1″ and Iaquinta plus someone else (it really doesn’t matter who, chose between ADP, Trez or Amauri will be a gamble right now) as the “2″.

I think giovinco would be better as the 1, but we could borrow Milan’s X-mas tree formation and put him and ADP together.

    Iaq/Trez/Amauri
    Giovinco ADP
    Nedved Tiago Poulsen
    De Ceg Chiellini Legro Greg
    Buffon

Yes, but I don’t expect to see him start. He was in a spell of poor form, and he’s just coming off a month of injury.

I think Giovinco is better suited to be trequartista than ADP.

“I know that when all four of our strikers are fit there is no better attack in Italy and Europe,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 29-year-old had come very close to being sold in the January transfer window and is happy that he is now considered untouchable.

“It’s wonderful. I am really pleased that we no longer speak about my departure. I have three years left on my contract and if they propose an extension I will sign it,” he added. When asked if he would remain at Juventus despite the feverish competition for places, Iaquinta said: “Yes. I like competition, the more there is the better.”

    Bravo, Vincenzo!

When asked to describe how he feels at the moment,” Iaquinta replied: “Proud. Satisfied. But I felt like a regular even when I was on the bench.

“If I stayed quiet, it’s because I knew that when you play you have to also show you actually deserve to.

I don´t think he´s the best, but his dedication and love for the bianconeri won me over a long time ago. No one would have begrudged him if he was unhappy at Juventus, even if he complained publicly, but he never has.

Camoranesi, Del Piero and Nedved golfers for charity

The fact that many bianconeri have a passion for golf is no news: many times Del Piero and friends relax in the midst of bunkers and fairways, even during the training camps, taking advantage of the rare moments of rest. Today they combined the useful with the fun bit, putting their clubs to a good cause at the exclusive course of the Royal Park Golf & Country Club I Roveri, in Venaria Reale where a golf tournament took place in favour of the Fondazione Piemontese per la Ricerca sul Cancro (cancer research foundation). Camoranesi, Del Piero and Nedved played against some of the greatest golf enthusiasts of Turin in doubles on 18 holes. The event also saw the participation of Francesco Molinari, who in 2006 was the first Italian golfer to win the Italian Open in 26 years. For enthusiasts such as Alex, Mauro and Pavel, this was a great occasion to learn a few secrets from a champion on the green.

hes maybe not as technically gifted, but hes a classic bomber and the way he plays is hard. thats what i like in a player not like most of them nowadays who go down from the softest touch

Iaquinta talent-wise is definitely NOT our best striker, but he does definitely have the best workrate.

And ADP is naturally a trequartista. The common misconception is that trequartista’s are not supposed to score, just set up goals. That’s not true. Baggio made the trequartista term famous, and he put in a shitload of goals. ADP just hasnt played as a trequartista in a long time, i even remember an interview on Goal.com where he said “i havent played there in a while” or something along those lines. He’s a deep lying striker, aka trequartista. Another problem with that is, when using a 4-4-2 there’s no trequartista position in that formation, so he plays as one of the strikers (still the deeper one though, which could still actually almost be considered a trequartista depending on the player, as a support striker, second striker, and trequartista, i believe are all pretty much the same thing). Personally, with a 4-3-1-2, i would use ADP as the “1″ and put Giovinco on the wing and two strikers ahead of them, though they could both be playmakers if Juve uses a 4-3-2-1.

like secco has the ability to sign any world class players. you will be promised david silva or ribery and end up with florent malouda.
what do you make of juan mata? he could be a quality cheaper option. seriously though how has secco got a job still? any other business in the entire world would have sacked him by now
