I love Brazil
By: alessio | August 30th, 2009Wow, that was everything I had hoped for. Class performance from our boys today, we dominated possession and took the game by the scruff of the neck. If you haven’t yet checked out the photos Roberto posted, check them out here.
PAGELLE: (ratings)
Buffon- 7.5: While he probably could have been a bit more attentive on Roma’s sleezy cheap goal, he more than made up for it with that brilliant save on Totti. A goal at the end of the half for Roma very well could have changed the game. How a man as big as him has the reflexes he does is confounding, he defies the laws of physics.
Grygera- 8: His offensive contribution was mixed, and he started the game a bit slowly, however Zdenek made some terrific challenges and looked defensively sharp throughout the rest of the game. If he can get some consistency, I see no reason why we need to dump him.
Cannavaro- 8: I’ll try and refrain from anti-Cannavaro comments, but you all know my position on him and nothing will change it. He got roasted once by Menez, but made great blocks, tackles, and generally looked defensively untroubled.
Chiellini- 8: An absolute monster in the air, the Cannavaro-Chiellini partnership is starting to gel so it seems. Equally capable when switched back to left-back.
De Ceglie- 7: The worst of the defenders but there is absolutely no shame in that tonight. Defensively he looked quite good to me most of the game, and offensively he worked hard. His crosses started Molinaro-esque but they improved. Ferrara obviously believes in him and with a solid run-out in the team, he will be our new starter.
Marchisio- 6: Still hasn’t really found his form this season, though he played better last week against Chievo. Roamed the midfield and caused plenty of pressure but didn’t really do anything that stood out in my mind. Unfortunate to go off with an injury that will likely cost him some Azzurri caps over the next two weeks.
Tiago- 7: To quote Datasport, “every game he looks more like the player Juventus thought they had bought 3 years ago.” Goddamn it took a long time, but it seems Tiago is finding his position in the team. He was smart with possession and determined without. His performance was good today, but not brilliant.
Felipe Melo-8: Maybe he’ll win me over after all…and then probably head out to Real Madrid the next day. He started out pretty poorly and conceded that led to De Rossi’s goal, but was brilliant for the rest of the game, someone needs to take a video of his performance today and show it to Sissoko. He sat deep in midfield and broke up plays excellently and covered defensively for the fullbacks when they ventured forward. Scored a great goal at the end to cap off a great debut. A good game, but to quote Yule Brenner, “This doesn’t mean I like you.”
Diego- 9: One word, genius. This kid is destined for some great things, as Datasport put it, it looks like he’s been playing at Juve for 10 years. There has been almost no problems with him, he has adjusted instantly to Serie A and much of the credit has to go to Ferrara for building the team around him. Two great goals and created plenty of opportunities. Just as Sissoko can learn from Melo’s performance today, so too can Giovinco. Diego’s first goal made me wonder if Giovinco would have had the physical strength to hold off Riise. The Zidane comparisons are premature, but one thing that reminded me of Zizou was the fact that Diego isn’t that fast on the counter…not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Iaquinta- 7: As usual, ran his heart out for the team and was a bit unlucky to not score. This man bleeds bianconero.
Amauri- 7: While not quite as good as last week, Amauri was very threatening today and won his duel with Mexes, though he was desperately unlucky to not get his name on the scoresheet. The referee unfairly called him back a number of times because of his size, a clash, the Roma player drops to the ground, whistle went against him, lame. A presence in the air.
Subs-
Camoranesi- 6: Camo didn’t do it for me today, he looked to be in decent form but didn’t seem to find his place in the 3-man midfield.
Poulsen- 5.5: Ran around and carried the ball but didn’t do much. C. Zanetti had a class game for Fiorentina…too bad we don’t have him to come off the bench.
Legrottaglie- 7: Came on, read the plays well and had Totti locked up in the air. Can’t ask for anything more.
Random thoughts about the game-
Ferrara: Goddamn I love him. Great team selection and the tactics were great, as Juve owned most of the possession. Under Ranieri there were several changes we were all crying out for, ie- Given the strength of our CBs, why not occasionally move Chiellini to LB and play Stendardo-Legro in the center? I grinned when he did that today. It hardly could have gone better today, and a lot of credit needs to go to Ferrara.
Roma: Julio Sergio, really? What the hell man, look out Doni. And that was a classy goal, and by classy, I mean scuzzy like scoring when a player is down injured. Cassetti is and always has been rubbish. Menez has a lot of maturing to do. De Rossi was pretty crappy today, especially given his primary job was to stop Diego. He did not do that. Cerci has a bright future. Who needs 2 Roma-born-and-bred players when you have 2 Torinese on the pitch? Roma started with 4 Italians, we had 7. (8 if you consider Diego/Amauri to be half Italian)
Del Piero v. Totti: Some Romanistas have laughingly suggested that Totti is vastly superior to ADP. You can do all the backheels you want, but match-winning goals are a bit more important. Totti hasn’t had any against us the last 3 years. ADP had had 2.
Rocchi: Good god, the first half he was whipping out that yellow card like he was Chinese. (Sorry, had to put that in there. What does that mean, anyways?) Then the 2nd he wasn’t. A pretty good refereeing performance but too often he whistled for fouls that he shouldn’t have.
Inter: The Scudetto race is officially on.

When this is on your bench…your team is in good shape.

Go and look at the scores from the past 5 years, stupid Romanista dog.

one positive roma can take away from that game was the performance of julio sergio…in him, i’d say they have a goalkeeper who can make the difference and is a quantum leap from the likes of doni and artur
the one reason why i’d say giovinco is not suited to the trequartista role ATM , is his lack of upper body strength…he gets shoved off the ball way too easily…the skill, guile and low centre of gravity are all there, but against physical opponents, seba very often loses out…both of diego’s goals demonstrate this quality, and so did zizzou, ronaldinho(in his prime!), messi, rui costa, maradona, and most of the other great ’10’s’ in football history
playing him as a second striker might help bcuz it means he’d have less players to get past n optimal time to make the most of his technique…or mebbe sormani and ‘em should get the kid working in the gym with weights and see if that’ll toughen him up

Alessio its a fleeting love, dont let it take over your life!
Oh I know, Gian. We’re lucky to have 3 relatively Europeanized Brazilians in the squad, but Brazilians frequently are good until they hit superstardom and crash. The real verdict on Diego/Melo etc will be in 4-5 years, Amauri I’m not concerned about.
Adam, I remember it was Ranieri but I still don’t know what he was driving at there.
I hope Trez gets to play, Amauri-Iaquinta are beasts and ADP of course, but he can prove himself again. Maybe with Iaquinta gone for internationals he’ll rest him one game after the break.

Juve Mercenaries. Diego, Melo all mercenaries.
Yeah and Riise, Vucinic, and Julio Baptista are all there for the love of the shirt, huh?
Prediction- Diego stays at Juve longer than Vucinic at Roma.

Hmmmm me thinks Juve and Lyon agreed to a deal to bring Grosso to Turin. For 3 million euros, he can bring a shit load of quality and some much needed STABILITY to our flanks.

By the way I forgot yesterday, the day we spanked Roma, was Pavel Nedved’s 37th birthday. Happy birthday FURIA!!!
French media is reporting Juve has agreed terms with Lyon and SKY Sports just picked it up…

Grosso’s a great player but does this mean De Ceglie is going to be benched for a season?

I don’t know why we didn’t just bring Criscito back and sold Molinaro. Or used Chiellini as LB with Legro and Canna in the middle.

It looks like we got Grosso. Great addition IMO, another Italian after the recent South American invasion and a world champion. I think our defence may be a bit on the slow side, but it will surely be experienced. I would put Caceres on the right, Grosso on the left, Chiellini and Canna in the middle with Legro, De Ceglie and Salihamidzic as the defence subs. Sell Molilnaro, send Ariaudo on loan, and save up some cash for Criscito next year. Plus, Diego, De Rossi, and Stankovic helped me jump 40 places in the fantasy league so this has been a great Juve weekend.

Video of Melo after the match. Apparently his grandmother died recently and his dad is pretty sick, so he’s emotional. I feel bad for the guy, but he put on one hell of a performance given the circumstances.

Roma supporter, who came here for god knows what reason…
This game highlighted the main difference between Roma and Juve, management.
Juve are probably the best managed team in Serie A at the moment. Sure, some Roma fans (myself a little bit) will argue when a team has money its easier to manage, but Juventus didnt do as well as they would have like last year and highlighted exactly what they needed, and they went about getting that as soon as they can. Roma meanwhile, did a lot worse then what they would have like last season, and instead of highlighting what we needed we wait til we lose 2 matches in serie a for Rosella to decide its time to make some purchases with less than 36hrs left in the transfer market at the time.
Also, Juve’s management is vastly superior to Inter’s. Inter probably have more money, yet they went and did some more “Morratti buys” as i like to call them. I dont think Mourinho wanted players like Milito and Motta to be honest, and he highlighted the need for a trequartisa ….hmm someone like Diego maybe ??
Ill be honest, I dont really like Juventus….I wanted to cry when I saw their celebration of the 2nd goal as if they had just won the scudetto…especially Melo’s, but your teams headed in the right direction again finally…good news for you jerks
especially after the previous failed transfer windows which saw Tiago and Poulsen join the club.btw…goal wasnt cheap, and although totti didnt play good yesterday he is still better than del piero. well each to their own i guess…lol

“Juve are probably the best managed team in Serie A at the moment.”
have to say genoa are definitely the best managed team in italy for the simple fact of they havent got the financial clout of a club like juve. although juve are looking good this season dare i say secco has done a good job???
as for sissoko hes been displaced by melo bigtime.

Just at this moment came the much awaited fax to League Soccer: Fabio Grosso (32) is a Juventus player.bye bye Molinaro

Genoa for me. Every fan underlines a perfect mercato for their team, for a ton of reasons, it doesn’t always work out. But the last two summers, Genoa has pretty much hit everything pundits/fans want.

De Ceglie would get plenty of opportunities to shine even as second-choice LB, especially in the Coppa. What is important is for us to sell Molinaro within the next few hours. With Grosso, De Ceglie, and utility-man Salamihamsandwich, we’re good at the LB spot. With a new, improved Grygera, a desperate-to-impress Caceres, and a hot-and-cold-and-injured Zebina, we should be good at RB too. Long story short, we’re legitimate contenders for the Scudetto and a CL semifinal spot.

Mercato is closed now, so Molinaro isn’t going anywhere. Grygera I’m holding off on judgement, because the last two seasons he had a few great games (like against Roma) and then had a string of utterly mediocre ones. Let’s see if he can get consistency, but it’s good he has competition and it’s better to keep him than Zebina, at the very least, Grygera is pretty immune to injury. (knock on wood)
TMW and most Italian news sources said the documents came through in time, Pessotto stayed late to get them and file them with the Lega Calcio. TMW says the Ariaudo-to-Cagliari documents were filed too late past the deadline and so the deal is off. No big deal, he can learn from our team this fall and go on loan in January if need be.

Alessio, the burial of Melo’s grandmother and the game against Roma were at the same time. He almost came to Brazil to attend the burial.
I only saw the highlights of the game. Diego’s goals were class! And what a touch from Iaquinta in the second goal!

Rest easy guys. Lyon just put it on their website. NOW it’s official.
http://www.olweb.fr/fr/Accueil/100007/Article/50868/Communique-officiel2million euro and 1million in bonuses to Lyon depending on how much he plays and if we win the league.

“Yeah and Riise, Vucinic, and Julio Baptista are all there for the love of the shirt, huh?
Prediction- Diego stays at Juve longer than Vucinic at Roma.”Vucinic is a romanista and supposedly rejected Milan and waited for Roma for a couple of years. Your prediction may be right but if he leaves it’s not his own choice but the management’s choice. Like Aquilani. You’re right about Baptista and Riise, though.
Congrats with your victory yesterday. Diego is going to be huge for you guys.

Nothing against those players but I think the whole idea of all the “Big 3″ players being mercenaries is ridiculous. All teams have a few players who play for the shirt, and plenty who are there because it’s at their stage in the career. No one questions Totti’s love for the shirt, but Menez isn’t anymore “Giallorosso” than say, Diego will be in 1 year.

“No one questions Totti’s love for the shirt”
Wrong. I do.. It is easily mistaken for love of the shirt, but it is nothing more than narcissism at its finest. Totti thrives on being the center of attention and being at a small club in a big city fits him perfectly. Totti would never do well at a big 3 club or a big club in another league. He couldnt stand being amongst great players and simply fitting in. He couldn’t stand somebody else getting the 10 jersey or somebody else draping the newspaper covers after a big win. Is it no surprise his wish washy attitude with the Azzurri? Or the fact after he retired he was angry that there weren’t more adamant attempts to bring him back? Totti has put on one great facade but he isn’t fooling everybody

kay this ref was INTENSE i mean someone would put a finger on the other team and they would get carded! i was surprised both teams ended with 10 men!
i don’t really understand how the roma goal counted considering the ref wasn’t even ready? i mean gigi was still assembling his wall? veryyy strange. oh well, we won so, i don’t really care much how their shit goal happened anyway:)Posted from

yeah sofia, but most juve goals are shit goals either way, funny you have a problem with a Roma goal. KJ, Palermo is also a small team but have yet to win something. Know your team’s history. Totti is one of the greatest playmakers (like ADP) and would have thrived anywhere. Beat down on a player you wished you could have had in your pink pussy team.

Deserved win. Although the loss probably meant the ax for Spal, but still, Juve played with cohesion. I have high hopes with them in the CL.
As for mercenaries, let’s be honest here. If Roma had signed a striker and he had put in two great goals, we’d all be singing his praises here. So nothing wrong with that — unless you happen to be an Athletic Bilbao fan.
As for question Totti’s devotion to the club. Meh. The desire to be the center of attention always plays a role in such decisions anyway. *One* of the reasons Maldini and Del Piero didn’t leave because they preferred being loved by their club supporters, they loved the attention and they loved the status. But then, things like that are hard to appreciate when you have Liverani as your team’s captain.
