VotD: Juventus Goals, Stagione 2009-2010

By: agiamba | May 20th, 2010

First thing I noted from this video was how often Diego was involved in the goals. Flop? I think not. He might not have lit Serie A on fire…but he produced.

Using Diego as a 2nd striker in a 4-4-2 (or whatever other formation with "two" strikers) could actually work... Cuz Diego often drops deep into midfield to either help the midfield or ask for/collect the ball... Hence, if Del Neri tells him specifically to not drop TOO far into midfield, he can play as a (drifting?) 2nd striker that drops deep to occupy/harass the defensive midfielders of the opposition (very good example of this is how Muller from Bayern does it, though he's obviously more of a striker)
Whereas if he he plays 4-3-1-2 then his dropping deep into midfield would cause there to be a huge gap between the lines, and effectively create a 4-4-0-2 (the 0 is there for a reason)...

Diego is amazing. You will see him in glory next year. Hopefully it will be at Juve.
  • No offense alessio, but WTF are you posting? Can we %$&@#&&@ forget about the last season already? :) These are times to be happy.

To me (and I'm not exaggerating), the only thing worth remembering of the last 9 months is that Roma-Juventus game back at the end of August. Everything that Juve could have been.

    And sadly, was not.

One formation doesn't always work. 4-3-1-2 works fine (it's just that Zac has been using all the wrong players in that formation) but 4-4-2 is better in other circumstances (with good full backs and wingers). With Gio and Diego, at least we'll have some tactical flexibility as both of them offer something different.

I saw maybe one play from Grygera there, and one goal from Zebina. From Cáceres, on the other side, nice stuff...

Can't really confirm it, but I think I noticed something on the videos: every game ADP scores ends with 2 or more goals from us.

Playing with wingers really give us the possibility of going Gio and Diego at the same time without bumping into each other.

A select few who are our weak links.
  • Blanda_Amania
I'm telling you. Diego's quality! He can work with who we've got. We just need a coach that can figure out how field them to compliment each other. The whole of the team isn't shit. It's a select few.
  • M
@Alessio: I did some counting and Diego was indeed involved in at least half of our goals, directly and indirectly.

Camo, Marchisio, Del Piero, Caceres and Candreva were the other significant contributors. If only the first 4 had stayed fit all season...

By the way, I posted this on Twitter but it goes for anyone here of course as well...if anyone would like to do a guest post (this summer or whenever) I'd happily post it. It can be informative, personal, anything.....a bio of your favorite player, what got you to love Juve in the first place, your take on the mercato, Del Neri, etc...whatever you'd like to do. If interested, email me at agiamba [at] gmail (dot) com

Camo's dummy for Iaquinta against Genoa, assist of the year

ok I gotta say this, although a bit off topic. But that picture of Gigi Del Neri from way back in the day in the last post is straight PIMP! you could have told me that was John Holmes and I would have believed you(probably a reference only Americans will get, older Americans I should say).

I'm excited for all the changes... sure he isn't Lippi or Capello but we've already gone down those roads and so far he is saying all the right things(ie changing back to the old Juve mentality and having a strong mindset)... So i'm in, I'm definitely drinking the Kool-aid
  • nico
wow. diego really got involved- and im a diego hater!

(can i just explain. im not an actual diego hater, i just think we shouldn't have changed the whole formation and squad to accomodate him)

cameronesi too. in fact. if the midfield was made up of marchisio-melo-camo, with diego ahead of them more often, which was the starting mid for our opening (successful) games- we would have had a far better season.

    CAMO TO STAY!
  • M
Marchisio isn't left footed is he?....All his goals this season were scored with his left. That kid has ICE in his veins!

@matt, Rinaldo: I second that! A midfield with Diego, Giovinco, Marchisio/Candreva, a young and pacey winger and one of Melo, Sissoko or Poulsen looks pretty good.
  • Rinaldo
    Dammit. Ignore the italics error.
  • Rinaldo
    giovinco + diego = success

Cannot describe in words how much I agree with you.

Ok this may be a bit off topic, but it just really struck my mind:
I just read the report on the financial situation of Juve (how we're posting profits, have no debts, and are hence very healthy financially) and I really think it's an unappreciated blessing that we have... But what REALLY struck me was this: I'm sure all of you know about the Villa-to-Barca transfer... Valencia (amongst MANY other clubs in Spain and Europe) are posting astronomical financial debts... But think about it, had Valencia been in the financial situation as us, would they truly have sold Villa to Barca? The point is this, as much as clubs like to flash money everywhere to buy the biggest fanciest players everywhere, the sport still has a business aspect to it.. If the club is in debt (and depending on how large the club is in terms of popularity) then the chances of keeping hold of your stars diminishes more and more every day... I'm just happy that in the midst of this atrocious period in Juve's history, that we aint in debt... Imagine, we would have to sell our stars (and the morons ofc, but they will probably sell for peanuts cuz they are shit) AND rebuild our team/club, with little/no money... So Mr. Blanc, even though (with all due respect) the average American probably knows more about Calcio than you, many thanks for the financial stability that you bring to this club!

Yeah y'all. Who is going to the game this weekend?Where are people going before the game?
  • Bashar
    Sunday.. not saturday. Sorry
  • Bashar
I got my tickets for the New York Red Bulls - Juventus game this Saturday. I'm excited as I've never seen an Italian team play live before. Good luck!
  • Robee
Something I noticed was the huge impact Camoranesi made comparing to the little playing time he had this year... It would be a big mistake to let him go, doesn't matter which formation Del Neri wants to use.
  • Jose
    an interpreter
  • Jose
Cassano did so well without understanding what Del Neri said?. Wow, Marotta should have bought and interpreter and Samp would have won the scudetto!!!
  • agiamba
Very thick accent. As Antonio Cassano famously said at Roma, "Non si capiva un cazzo di quello che dice ed e un po' ambiguo" (I couldn't understand what the fuck he was saying, and he was a bit ambiguous)
  • Jorid
Mo: Haha, he's indeed Italian. He's from Udine though and has a very thick Friulano accent. People from Friuli sound like they forget the "r" in every word, or like they replace it with a thick "h".
  • Mo
Del Neri doesn’t sound Italian? What’s up with the accent and that voice?
  • agiamba
I agree. Better midfield, energetic fullbacks...and maybe a few shooting lessons from Del Piero, and Diego will be fantastic.
  • alessio
i meant diego didnot have a bigger impact since he was not supported by his team mates, most notably the 0 creativity midfield and horrendous fullbacks.
  • Mo
This is who i would like to see come in before the world cup and after considering how prices will sky rocket after the WC so we need to move fast:
Before (these guys are going to have a great WC):
    1- Kjaer
    2- Criscito
    3- Van der Weil
    4- Caceras
    5- Affelay

After (these guys won't be playing):
    1- Dzeko
2- 2 wingers that can actually cross and drible

    We should sell:
    1- Zebina
    2- Amauri
    3- Grygera
    4- tiago
    5- Molinaro
    6- Polsoun
    7- Trez
    8- Grosso

    Bargaining chips for our targets:
1- Amauri specifically for the Kjaer opperation
2- PDC (besides the Milan game a year back he hasn't been that great)

We SHOULD recall Almiron he has been great this year!

The first game against Sampdoria was simply amazing

Diego is a class act. But football is an 11-a side game

Not sure what you mean there..could you elaborate a bit?

Rewatched the videos again, and here's my secondary conclusions-
#1- Didn't count, but I swear Diego had a hand in 50% of our goals.
#2- Trezeguet and ADP are not finished. Maybe they shouldn't be starting, but they are instinctive players and that doesn't die.
#3- Count the amount of assists that came from Zebina, Grygera, and Grosso...not many. Caceres had several excellent attacks, and De Ceglie had some good crosses.

If our defense wasn't utter shit...
  • one of the saddest threads in juve offside. A picture of what could have been :(

Almost every goal Marchisio has scored in a Juve jersey has been a chip. So awesome.
  • agiamba
    1. Marchisio finishes so coolly when given chances.

So true. So much composure in difficult areas, and he chips keepers just brilliantly.
  • ooBia
How Diego made me feel when we visited Rome for the first time last season (vs. Roma) is enough for me to love and want him to be here for years to come. As Alastair and ergo said, if we were patient for Amauri being useless for a year and a half, or Zebina for SIX years, we should be patient for Diego who is definitely an amazing player, he just needs talent around him.
  • Alastair
    Two other thoughts:

    1. Marchisio finishes so coolly when given chances.
    2. How did we go from that first Roma game to this?
  • Jorid
Agreed with all of you on Diego.
  • ergo
Thats what I dont understand about the Diego haters, he might not have been the huge revelation many people expected but he was involved and effective.

Also sad to think that pretty much the same amount was scored on us...
